Hi, This is my first Dominance War Entry and i am very excited to be part of this epic Dominance War. I have decided to do a Norm > Clericon .
I am sure going to learn a lot during the process..
Pls give your valuable opinions and crits.

Name: Naidraug
Race: Mutant Norm
Class: Clericon

The Mutant gene that was passed to them by their ancestors has become more dangerous with the birth of each new generation, with the addition of each new race into the bloodline. Now, thousands of years later, there are the elite few who are born with the fully formed special powers of their predecessors. Their inherited talents and skills shift, change and evolve with each use, making control near impossible and insanity unavoidable. It's only through prayers and spiritual practices that they can hold their madness long enough to fulfill their vows and restore order out of death and chaos that has become their world.

Sworn to protect the cities and to end the darkness, Naidraug practices spirituality, prayers and also mastered the art of magic extensively that when faced with perils greater than death and hell, the blood fallen will be that of the enemy's. He is now the warrior of the Elder Gods, champion of the realm ; otherwise, he is the hand of death itself..

Thanks Sunny, i have sketched 2 versions of the character.. i am bit stuck at the moment thinking on which one to go ahead with since i like both of them, but my concern is that it should have that clericon look along with being powerful also i don't want to go too muscular as he wouldn't be using much of physical strength..

please tell me your opinions..

liked the story! i think you should go with first one, number 2 is looking like he'll be in melee combat.

Looking pretty good. I like the first one, but the belt and stuff in the second is pretty neat as well. Adding something like a belt to the first one that has shapes similar to the headdress would look nice. Getting some of those angular shapes into the staff would be cool as well.

Keep it up!

nellement
03-22-2009, 10:49 AM
I think 2 would be nice, because it adds more different parts than with uniform robe like on the 1st one, maybe try to add the robe just on the arms and not on the torso area, try it could be cool and interesting.

Hi and thanks for commenting my entry. :)
I like the first of your sketches but also the lower part in the second, like other said. The first one gives the impression of someone with a high rank/power. Maybe you just need to go a bit more crazy with him.
Keep it up! :buttrock:

Nitin As far as the story is concern its really gr8... i like the story... but i think u can improvise more on your 2d sketches.. jus my opinion.....nways keep it up.. and all the very best.....

ersinerturk: Thanks a lot for your opinion, i will be working more on the first sketch

Swizzle: Thanks a lot, i actually spent more time sketching the second one.. now i decided to go with the first sketch, will add more details to it and angular shapes for the staff is a good idea, thanks

nellement: i agree with you, the uniform robe is boring.. i will add similar details on the first character and as you said will try and keep the robes flowing only upto the hand and then may be the robes flow sidewards as it comes towards the torso area.. thanks for your valuable crits.

Izuael: Thanks a lot Mikael, thats exactly what i was looking for.. a high rank position, he is the champion of his realm, i am glad that there is some feel of it. i am definitely going with the first sketch..

Heikrujam: Thank debdutta, i will be improvising on the first sketch.. adding more details and elements to it..

wenart: Thanks wenart, i am definitely going with the first sketch now..

Thanks once again for all the opinions and crits.. will be posting the rough zbrush doodle soon..

Sometimes a costume can make or break a character; it looks like you have the beginnings of something good, and as you've stated you're going to come back and add additional details, but just an idea: maybe the clericon has a really avant-garde outfit with a huge, ornate collar and highly decorated flowing robes (maybe reminiscent of an ecclesiastical/aristocratic type)--don't get tied down to battle-ready attire just yet. It looks fantastic man, keep up the good work!

Kharn-ivor
03-22-2009, 11:03 PM
Like CGsavant said, unless you really want to do an organic body, then I think the long flowing cloak would suit the character more. I think the clericon would come to battle with very ornate robes/cloaks, and that would make them feel very other wordly. Good luck mate :)

Hexahedron: Thank you

ersinerturk: Thanks a lot

CGsavant: Thanks a lot for you suggestions, its very helpful. i liked the idea, i will do some drapery studies and experiment on the robes in zbrush, it would be more easy for me to do it in zbrush than sketching..

Kharn-ivor: I agree with you, i will drop the idea of showing the body.. i will work on the dress more.

nellement: Sure, i will work on the dress design..

Ah, that's a lot better. Don't be afraid to go pretty crazy with accessories, belts, chains, bits and baubles in the concept; you can always refine it later on if you need to.

namnocilis
03-23-2009, 04:57 AM
Thanks Swizzle, thats a good idea.. chains, baubles etc
i will do some research on it and will try adding as many different elements as possible and later refine it accordingly

WOAHHHH... well here is a Foe my demon has to worry abt.. how am i going to fight a super powerful eagle thingy that has a powerful staff and crazy genetical powers.. :D Awesome job nitin.. good stuff.. liked ur concept as well as the story.. ya well every else said abt all the dress and accessories and stuff.. i jst have a little suggestion.. since he has all this eagle beak and stuff, instead of hands u can have claws.. jst an idea though.. but nice going so far..

nellement
03-23-2009, 01:22 PM
Yes this is much better and more interesting silhouette and I agree with swizzle always try crazy things don't be afraid to make for example giant armor plates or something unusual because from that you can find more designs that could help you make better final product.

Hey Nitin,

Really cool concept. Like a lot the back story :) The head model looks well. Your idea for a power jwell sounds cool, maybe a floating jwell over his head, can work well. :D Again, great work! And looking forward for more updates! Cheers!!

Hi namnocilis

Man you are a writer jeje  , the story and the detail give to much live to your character, nice clean process, enjoy this begin part in 2d, later 3d give the logical, 3d show all we can not see, this is i like of 3d, no where to run or hide jeje:thumbsup: , good luck... i follow all your WIP.

hi, hey cool he looks mysterious and powerfull but there's 1 thing i felt about his proportions that may be he could be a bit taller ,just a thought, may be take suggestions from others on it....k cool going ......waiting for update.....

aelwine
03-24-2009, 04:11 PM
I agree with the precedent comment on trying to make him look a bit taller.
I wonder also if you could extend a bit his arms to give him a kind a bird of prey look, like their huge wingspan.

Other than that I like your concept and the background story.
be sure to show those neck folds in the final piece, are they are starting to get hidden behind his collar.

namnocilis
03-24-2009, 10:01 PM
Hellguardian: Thanks a lot man.. ya, as you said it seems like the claws suits him much better, i will definitely try that out

nellement: Thanks, i am trying out some different variations with armour plates but i haven't got any satisfying results yet, was feeling that i am losing the clericon feel..
now i am trying to figure out how to add those magic portions and some scrolls along with the dress, but adding a belt to hold those items changed the feel of that character again, somehow have to make it all work together and moreover powercuts at my place is killing me, unscheduled load shedding for more than 6 hours a day  anyways, thanks for the support, i will post some updates by this weekend

GregStrangis: Thanks for the suggestions, i really liked the idea of giving something to the left hand.. also will make some variations of the staff

Ferx: Thanks a lot, floating objects is a cool idea.. awesome! i won't be making that jewel on the head float though but instead i am planning to make those magic portions and stuffs float around him rather than trying to put it on a belt around his waist.. Thanks for that fantastic idea :)

sadrack: Thanks a lot! I am glad you like it, i am really sorry that i don't have any w.i.p this time but i will definitely post updates by this weekend, meanwhile if can get some more opinions and suggestions i could work on it too..

Ghostesper: Thanks, I agree with you and all the others who told about the clothes and i am trying to spend more time on the look and flow of the clothes, its a real challenge for me.. trying different things, hopefully i can make it more interesting

divij: Thanks man, u r right.. after u mentioned i felt the same, will make him a bit more taller

aelwine: ya, the longer arms is making a huge difference.. i just quickly tried it out but i felt that by just pulling the drapery near his arms to full length till the wrist itself is giving it a feel of longer wingspan but will also extend the arms a bit more and about the folds, i will keep that it mind.. ya currently its getting covered by the collar when viewed from the side angle

Thanks everybody for your support, opinions and suggestions.. its helping me a lot to think in new directions, i am really sorry that i could not show any updates this time.. experiencing some major power cuts in my place and not been able to work continiously, will be back with some updates by this weekend, until then any more inputs and suggestions will be very helpful..

This is a neat concept!

Looking at the design the first thing that came to mind was the Egyptian god Ra.

I like the back story you presented as well, it's interesting regarding the folds marking age.

You ought to take a few good looks at Egyptian art and pick a few design elements out that you think look cool. Also as was mentioned to me before try showing off a little technology to let us know it's still a sci-fi concept.

Good work so far, keep at it!

The priest-thing makes him look cunningly dangerous.
Hmm, perhaps you should change a bit of his mouth/beak. I wonder what it would look like, if you make the points point to different directions. Perhaps the under part pointing left, the upper part right.

Hi,
first of all thanks for commenting my entry.
I like how you are thinking about your concept in terms of magical power instead of physical, according to this I think would be nice to go further and contrast more a fragile body with a huge and powerfull clothes and accesories, if you think about it let's take as an example any religious leader, generally, is a fragile old man with a huge symbolic structure behind him. I think this could lead to a nice path.
keep the good work!

Hello

it's quite an interesting concept. The aspect with their folds is quite unique, i would concentrate on that and work at the style of the silhouette. Maybe you can develope this idea by adding a lots of folds and puffs on his robe, maybe with a touch of this old fashioned clothes. Just a suggestion.

sepulverture: Thanks, i didn't know that we are supposed to be showing some sci-fi influence. i thought norms and demon race didn't need to show any sci-fi influence as they are more into magical and dark arts and some of them might have never bothered to keep up with technology and stuff, if it is a must then i have to figure out a way to add sci-fi influence.. thanks for the info

madshooter: Thanks!

heikrujam: Thanks deb!

rattlesnake: Thanks a lot for the support!

Nikolay: Thanks!

DeadinTheAttic: Thanks! i want him to look dangerous but may not so cunning. the idea of pointing beak to different direction seems interesting.. will try that out in the end

Intervain: Thanks!

Kitunen: Thanks a lot!

MrRico: Thanks! i was really stuck with the clothes not able to decide how i could make it more interesting, i referred clothes of some religious leaders and some of them seems interesting.. after the basemesh is done, i will spend lot of time doing research and variations on the drapery.. the idea of huge symbolic structure behind is cool! will definitely add that in the final render as background.

DarkBlueArt: Thanks a lot for the image example! i had completely missed the old fashioned clothes, forgot that they had lots of reference for drapery and folds.. i will spend lot of time studying drapery from now and do some experimental sculpting on various types of clothes..

i have made a basemesh for the character, so now i can do some experiments with this in 3D.. adding it to the next post

Hi Namnocilis

One coments only for you consider it like an option, when I see the anatomical part of the character they kills to me and when you put clothes to him I feel that it covers to much, I believe that you would have to choose between complicated clothes all that support your concept or perhaps less clothes let see more details of the anatomy, like folds, wings or organic elements, you have something very good between hands, good luck your project goes very well, i like a lot.

Hexahedron
03-28-2009, 07:39 PM
Hey Namnocilis, its looking pretty fine in 3D. You really got a good start. The only thing is that the hands seems a little bit too small but perhaps it's the concept? Otherwise, it's looking great. Great job pal.

Intervain

nice! you're really flying with this one :) I like #2 - with the short sleeves - I think it's good to expose the arms a bit more :)...

The head and hands feel a little small atm, they get lost amidst the clothing.

Im going to have to agree with Intervain, I like 2! short sleeves all the way

GregStrangis

Jove
03-29-2009, 02:20 AM
Hey namnocilis, nice start, experiment a little more with the shape though. To make the cloth more interesting try working with layers, I'd suggest opening up the robe with more layers underneath and vary the material and length to brake up the silhouette as it is a little stiff right now. Maybe throw on some belts, pouches and bags as well, keep pushing it!

namnocilis
03-29-2009, 04:28 PM
Izuael: Thanks for your opinion..

sadrack: Thanks a lot, that was a tough choice i had to make but this time i will have to go with sculpting drapery details and also will be good learning process too since i have never sculpted drapery before.

b1s: Thanks, i haven't tried much of rigging but for this challenge i will be posing it either in zbrush or in maya using deformers

Hexahedron: Thanks! mostly because of the drapery hands appear small.. anyways, i will add some more volume to the hands in zbrush

Trancos057: Thanks!

Intervain: Thanks!, myself felt the same about showing arms a bit but then i was wondering if that would effect the overall feel, thanks for your opinion..

Seven: Thanks for your opinion! i will go with short sleeves

GregStrangis: Thanks for your opinion!

Jove: Thanks! thats a good idea, i will try giving some layering for clothes also will work on the silhouette.. about the pouches and bags, i will have figure out a way to add that on the dress, but few things like baubles and healing magic portion.. that i am planning it to make it float in air and moves along with him

here is a rough sketch giving the idea of how the magic portion and few other things float around him.

Heya! Updates are looking good man.

I don't know if sci fi influence is absolutely necessary, although I do imagine that it should be shown since the setting given in the brief is a sci-fi/fantasy post apocalyptic future.

I can understand why you wouldn't really go in a sci-fi direction with this, but I think for the sake of placement safety it would be wise to incorporate some non-intrusive sci fi elements. Nothing that will tremendously alter the design you have laid out here, but enough to show that it does in fact take place in a high technology universe.

From this image I get more an impression of Diablo or Diablo 2 than anything, which is not a bad thing but we must remember the brief and it's stated time period.

I could be wrong however.

Good work regardless.

Hey man! Cool stuff, i really like the head design.. I dont think the clothes and body raises it above ordinary, looks like an ordinary magician. I see two routes you could try out, either make him extraordinaire and more spectacular with more dramatic shapes and designs.. Or, maybe go with a more in depth personality, like that image of Decard Cain at the top of the three. Or wy not toss in a little bit of both maybe. Just let the pen loose and see what it gives you, think more of abstract shape than the actual figure your painting. Keep it up! :)

Good concept man, keep on working the design ! ;)
I know it's hard, i felt weak in design often while looking on other WIP's, but it have to raise your motivation ! The references you've been given are good, and you can pick the style of a specific culture, rituals... To make it rich, thinks about some small stuff the character could use: is he smoking ? does he need a spellbook ? spellrolls ? is he need a drink ? etc

Keep it up ;)

No worries man. I am also learning a lot about myself as I work through this competition. It's tough going, but really worthwhile once accomplished I think.

Take the design you already have and silhouette some additions to it. I love the head you have going so far, if he's a mutant then maybe he has some physical deficiencies that would make him reliant on some mechanical augmentation or something like that? Nothing to imply cybernetics, as that would be against the rules, but perhaps a breathing apparatus or something like that. Nothing too cliche of course, but I'm sure you can come up with something.

Post up the ideas that you HAVE come up with, let us take a look at them and help you along.

You can do it, good work so far, keep at it!

FrozZT: I totally agree with you, myself felt the same about the clothes .. has a ordinary magician feel, i am trying to make it look extraordinary but then i am finding it very hard to draw some abstract and dramatic shapes, its just not coming :shrug: must sketch more often from now.. i will add some sci-fi influence and hopefully that would make some difference.. Thanks a lot for the support!

Hellguardian: Thanks Supreeth, thats true.. we have to finish it to the end and will do it.. seriously, this making own concepts with restricted rules is much harder than i thought and very challenging with the time limit but i m enjoying it..

FarazMobin: Thanks Faraz!

Abrvpt: Thanks a lot for the encouragement!

Sepulverture: Thanks a lot! that was very helpful in thinking.. i have designed a concept for his priestly crown, added some sci-fi feel also trying to keep that priestly feel intact.. not sure if it works but anyways will post the design next and about the drapery i am still thinking about it.

will post the priestly crown design next.. Thanks a lot everybody

crown looks very well. it's detailed but still simple enough.
number 4 is my favourite since it's most detailed. grabs attention more than others.
going very well, keep it up!

Wonder what this will look like at the end.
Thought about asymmetrical bodyparts? Or do you want to create a clean, dominant design, smooth and noble?

Thank you very much for your support :)

Yes, I'm very fond of egyptian mythology :P

I wish I could have more time to dedicate to this contest, aswell as more knowledge of these kinds of arts, so that I could be a little more competitive!... but oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait and keep practising!... :P

Best of luck to you ;)

Hey namnocilis, loos like you've thought everything out thoroughly, that's great. The character design and concept are awesome, and my little suggestion, if nobody else has pointed it out, would be to give him a hump and a bit more elderly look.
Apart from that, his looking terrific! Keep it coming!

vikramvr: Thanks vikram!

Ferx: Thanks a lot!

ShamesArt: Thanks!

DeadinTheAttic: even i wonder what it will look like in the end, concept is evolving with every new idea and i m just going along with it while enjoying the process.. i haven't thought about asymmetrical parts yet, good idea though.. Thanks!

TheSphinx: Thanks! we just need to keep practising, Best of luck to you too.. cheers!

GregStrangis: Thanks a lot!

animsennn: Thanks!

Ataulfo: Thanks!

Deepam: Thanks!

Yin-Shiuan: Thanks a lot for your opinion..

Maxter: Thanks a lot!

GaeasHerald: Thanks a lot! i had tried that in the beginning and it really made him look lot more elderly but then at that time i had different plans.. now since the concept is evolving, i will definitely think about it once again..

Looking good man. Way cool! This helped top it off, now you just need to polish it up.

Just a quick note on the design overall. since you apparently decided to go with the egyptian motif it may not hurt to add a few more details showing such. Not too many details ,you don't want to look overly influenced and keep it original, but just a few small things to help the viewer draw a link.

he design is killer overall, it was a good move. Keep at it, and let's see this thing sharpened up shall we? :)

Good luck!

Love the cleric look of your norm.

I really like how you've specified how the power of the character grows through changes in the physical aspect of the character. Makes me wonder how he will look 1000 year in the future when he is eve more powerful.

I think the brain should be sculpted and not just a hologram and I think the folds under the neck should be more pronounced and hang down a little.

Keep up the great work

SepulVerture: Thanks a lot! got stuck with personal work and didn't update for sometime on the concept.. i will find sometime and sharpen this concept! i just hope i haven't lost too much time..

JohnWoo: Thank you!

samoht: Thanks!

nellement: Thanks!

StefanoDubay: Thanks! i haven't thought about it yet.. will see if it works with the design

Yone: Thanks a lot! i agree with the folds.. i will refine it before it is finished and about the sculpting of that brain, i will add some slight emboss feel in sculpt.. but not too much defined else it might be actually taken as a brain and i want that to be just a brain imaging display..

Sorry! No updates this time.. was off for a while, back on it now!!
