This is the concept for the character I'll be doing for my first Dominance War. Actually I must admit I feel a bit depressed after seeing so much great work around. But this is a great opportunity for me to learn more. I hope you can give me critics and comments since they'll be more than welcome for the development of my work in progress.

Thanks in advance,

Very interesting how you placed her on the back of the tail and not in the front. Although if you cut her tail off she dies a fast death. I would just make the front more menace and dangerous so as to not allow for and easy defeat. And place her more secluded in the back of the tail. But overall very interesting.

I like it - it's a strong concept that will translate well into 3D.

My only crit is that it seems that the detail could be better spread out. The coolest part is the female at the end of the scorpion tail, so I'd make that a bigger part of the whole model, and perhaps resize some of the other elements to increase the aggressiveness as well, like the legs.

I made a quick edit to yours pick:
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/4998/domoverpaint01.jpg

As I said, your details and idea are strong, I just think the balance could be a bit stronger. :)

Thanks for the comments and I see your point. I like the idea and it's true, it felt too small considering its the most important part of the model.

WoodenPuppet, thanks for the comments, I'll see how I can protect the front much more, and as Dargon suggested, I'll be making the tail shorter.

Thanks again!

James

So I reworked on my concept as Dragon suggested me, and I liked it much more.

This is the update. Critics and comments will make my day.

At first look i thought it was 3D and then realised that was ur concept sketch, i am wondering if your concept sketch itself is like this then wonder how the 3D version will be.. no doubt that your texturing will be kick ass..wow! the last update is really great.. nice staff design too, waiting for the updates..

Very nice! I like the fact that her head/mask resembles the scorpion stinger, and I also like the way that hand covers her breast. And her bellybutton eye too. I'd love it if it had some hair in its joints and legs like some spiders do.
Looking forward for updates!

hey alex.. awesome cocnept... loved the whole female scorpion thing.. the second modified version looks even more deadly, the one with the shorter tail.. only concern that i have is how is she goin to defend herself if she is attcked from the back.. as i c it there is nothin that she can use to attack someone at the back.. and also it ll take time for her to turn all the way around since she has to rotate the entire body.. I may be wrong but thats wat i felt.. But great job..

03-23-2009, 02:03 PM
GaeasHerald, thanks for the comments pal. As for the hair, that's a nice idea. It would look nastier that way.

Hellgaurdian, really good point you bring up. I'll have to go back to concept table and come up with a solution lol. Thanks pal.

Awesome concept. This is something different for sure. Always like to see something different being shown and used.

I'd change one thing though.

In the initial sketch that shows the daemon and her staff you show the tail being considerably shorter. I think it looks way better in that form. The long stinger tail is interesting, but it's a little more difficult to associate the humanoid part with the scorpion part at a glance. On the other hand however, if you place the humanoid section too close to the scorpion section it may be misconstrued that she is riding the scorpion, rather than IS the scorpion.

Great concept, looking forward to seeing more.

03-25-2009, 01:49 AM
The concept is amazing, both for your drawing skill and the idea.

Maybe a "silk skirt" in the back could improve the "Queen Style".

I hope his "body" doesn't shake the tail like a dog when he's happy. ^^

Hexahedron
03-25-2009, 02:17 AM
Sepulverture: Thanks for your comments. I'll try to check the good size of the tail while modelling I guess. Since either too short or too long aren't suitable. Thanks again pal.

Irvin: Good idea man, I didn't put enough effort into the armour and clothing. So I'll see what I can do. Thanks again. And no, hopefully her body won't be shaking the tail otherwise she is a goner lol

Finally started modelling. I began modelling the hands, then the rest of the body. and just started modelling the armor. For the armor I thought would be cool to have a sort of magic talisman/artifact shaped as a human head which would represent the queen's face before she was sent to hell. The eyes of this statue are two obsidian stones which take the souls of her enemies. For her body I went with exaggerated shapes specially with the length of her body.
The next few days I'll try to finish the low poly armor, and then continue with the scorpion body.
Cheers :)

kinda disturbing ;) - not quite sure about the way those arms at the bottom are attatched - they need the structure to support them and it looks like the hip bones are not it, since they're lower down...

StefanoDubay
03-26-2009, 06:16 AM
I agree with Magdalena, you have to find a bone structure to stick those in! nothing says tht they couldn't fit in the femur sockets

Thanks Chris! Nice to see you here.
Concerning the lower arms. I already started fixing it since it's truth, they were too high to be attached to any bone. I'll try to post a new update as soon as I can since I would like to work more on the armor.

Thanks again everyone for the critics and advice. They are really helpful.

Awesome concept and great start on the modeling. I do agree with Intervain and StefanoDubay about the attatchment of the bottom arms. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see more.

Hexahedron
03-28-2009, 02:21 PM
Thanks Stutts for the comments. Actually I tried fixing the arms. Lowered them down until it made much more sense but I didn't like the result. Also the length of the body started bothering me since it didn't look the way I thought it would. So I replaced the wings like claws in the back of the character with the arms. That way, I hope, it makes more sense. Also I'm much more happy with the overall look.
Also I've already started modeling the base mesh for the armor.
Critics and comments are more than welcome right now.

Ravis3057
03-29-2009, 07:55 PM
Why are you leaving your original concept? Especially with the placement of the second set of arms? Its looking good, but I think your concept's proportions look nicer for the composition.

Hexahedron
03-29-2009, 08:17 PM
Ravis3057, thanks for your comments. Do you mean the length of the body looks better in the concept? Right now I'm not so sure, now that I'm working the concept on 3D I step on a couple of problems so the way I solved them was to bring the second pair of arms closer to the upper arms. I wasn't so sure of the way it looked with the lowers arms before.
But if you have any suggestions, they are more than welcome right now. Thanks again for your input.

Ravis3057
03-29-2009, 08:40 PM
I think I like the lower arms because the have shoulders and still have that forward facing alignment just like in your other arms. All of the scorpions limbs are of the same orintation, so why not replicate that in your character? I also think I like the angles and hard edges you have in your concept. Like the ones in your hands and on the helmet. Finally, her butt seems a bit flat and in your concept it is round almost like an ant's butt. Hope this is a little more clear, I look forward to seeing more from you.

namnocilis
03-29-2009, 09:09 PM
i think for this character, the lower arms looked much better when it was positioned just like in the initial concept.. and instead of pushing the lower arms up and closer to the upper arm i think you should find a structure to support it in that lower position itself, something like imagine if there was an extra clavicle there and that way you could change the shape of that lower area where the arms connect.. i think its because the area where it first connected looked thin and then it also ended in human hip fashion with 2 legs so it was feeling like there is nothing to support those arms.. but in those second 3d version the hip looked different because of that armour and all

personally, i think it is killing the original concept by placing the lower arms up and very close to the upper arm.. usually thats the way but for this character especially i liked it just the way it was in the initial concept sketch..

namnocilis
03-29-2009, 09:33 PM
on the second thought to avoid all confusion.. those lower arms could be exo skeletons and would solve most problems ;)

Hexahedron
03-30-2009, 12:14 AM
Ravis3057: Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. I'll continue working on the lower arms. This time following the concept. I'll make a few adjustments so it looks better than the last time I posted it. Also I'll follow your advice concerning the butt. Looked too human. And you are right, in the original concept I intended it to be more insect-like. It's mostly the anatomy concerning where to properly connect the arms to the body that was bugging these days.

Namnocilis: Thanks pal. I'll bring back the concept to the original state. I was feeling I was kinda going out of what I had previously on my mind.

Thanks again guys, your input helps me a lot.

I'll post an update as soon as I finish fixing all those details.

James

Nice work Hexahedron...what really caught my eye was the head model between her cleavage, it's very different and a great detail...I will look forward to seeing the complete model before the ZB pass...

real nice work so far!...

Hexahedron
04-01-2009, 02:03 AM
Fernando: Thanks pal,

JohnWoo: Thanks for your comment. The idea behind the head model is that it's actually a magic artifact/jewel in the shape of her face when she was human. The eyes are made of obsidian stone, and they take the souls of her enemies. The idea came from the venetian masks. I'm glad you like it :)

So a new update :)
Now I've started modelling the scorpion body. Also fixed the position of the arms because I didn't like the way they were before. Then I'll finish as soon as possible the missing details, such as the gauntlet, re-adjust the helmet, and finish the rest of the scorpion body. For now I've just fooled around the legs of the scorpion so still far from polished.

Critics and comments are more than welcomed.

Really really nice, well done. My only suggestion would be to find some element to help in the transition from the girl to the scorpion (maybe spikes?). Something a bit repetitive that helps tie the two together.
Waiting for updates! :)

Ravis3057

Looking better, But I think your arms are still a bit awkward. I think it is because in your 3d model you have given her hips and the proportions are closer to that of a human. Your concept has a very thin waist and the hips weld into the scorpion. Also, in your concept the arms seen to have a socket they fit into. Looks good though, I am sure it would look great the way you have it too. Hope this helps.

Hey James! Great update! I agree with some of the other suggestions. I think her shoulders should be broader. I was also a fan of her small waist and the way the arms conencted on your concept sketch like Ravis said. Right now her hips are too human like. As is the rest of her torso. It looks like a human body with armor, as where in the sketch it looked more as if the protection/armor was part of her, and that's what I really liked! Hope this helps! Keep it up!

GaesHerald: You are right man, I'll work on it so it the transition looks more natural. Thanks!

Ravis3057: Thanks a lot again. I appreciate a lot your input. Right now I'm working on it. I made the body longer, also thinner. Still
trying to make those lower arms look good. Also I'm working on the transition with the scorpion tail. Again, thanks a lot!

Fernado: Thanks for dropping by. I made the shoulders wider as you suggested, now it looks much better. Thanks!

Chris: Hey man!. Thanks, now the shoulders are wider. And I worked on the waist,so now it's smaller, much more like an insect.
Thanks for dropping by :)

Hey, thanks Ataulfo!

New update, now I'm almost done with the scorpion. Also as I was suggested, I made the body longer and thinner, the shoulders broader. Worked on those lower arms, And also worked on the tail. I cut down a bit and made it more like a real scorpion tail rather than the legs-like figure. I'm still missing some details though like the staff that hopefully I'll be modelling tomorrow. And soon to ZBrush if everything goes allright.

Thanks again to everyone for their valuable input.

Awesome update! It's coming along great! I see this is a little more like your first sketch, with the bigger scorpion bottom and smaller "woman", but did you try a modeled version with a bigger "woman" like the corrected version of the sketch you posted? I'd be curious to see how that translates into 3D, cause I think it would be better. Right now we loose a little bit of focus form the "woman" which I think should be the main focus of the character. Keep it up! :)

its looking better, another thing i just noticed is that the eye on the torso looks much bigger in the sketch than in 3D.. also that arms which is holding on the breasts looks much better in sketch.. i think you could sculpted all those details in zbrush instead of keeping it as separate polygon, anyways.. doesn't matter much, rest of the things you can correct it in the zbrush stage, Great going! waiting for sculpting updates..

I like her at the scale she is. I understand the point that warpv (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=244692) made, and I agree to some degree. You are going to have a hell of a time trying to pose her where all of your details can be seen, but still I find the proportions appealing. I wonder...what is your poly count at this point?

Hi James, see that you're getting mixed comments regarding the relative proportion of the girl and the monster, which also happened to me a while ago. IMO, the proportion is just fine, and in the end, the really important issue is the visual weight of each part, which can be dealt with through color, perspective, detail distribution and lighting. :) Just my two cents.
I'll be waiting for the wicked Zbrush detailing! :bounce:

Chris: Hey man! I worked on her size. Now she is bigger. Also I shorten up the tail a bit. I'm posting an image
for critics and comments. Thanks for your comments :)

Nitin: I never realized the eye was smaller in the 3D version. Thanks for pointing me that out.
The reason why I wanted to model the hand is because I'm still more used to model first and then
bring to ZBrush for details. I'm still in the progress of learning ZBrush. Thanks for your comments pal :)

Ravis: I still hesitate. I find both proportions appealing. But it's true I'll have a harder time trying to show
her if she is smaller. Unless I find a way. Right now my polycount is 28.814 Tri for everything.
After ZBrush I'll be making a low poly version using Polyboost.

Gerardo: Thanks man! I'll keep that in mind. Thanks a lot :)

ShamesArt: Thanks man!

Hopefully, next update will be with ZBrush. Here I post an update, Let me know if you think the proportions are ok.

I was supposed to update at least once before starting ZBrush. But I must admit I feel kind of lost right now. It's mostly the posing that bothers me since I cannot figure out how to pose the model so I can show the most of it (specially the woman). Either I lose the woman of sight, or I don't show the scorpion enough, so basically I cannot find the right spot for it at the moment. So I've been thinking (if I'm allowed) to change for a demon princess. Keeping some of the idea intact. I don't know yet. At this point comments and ideas are the most welcomed. Cheers,

James

if you are just planning to put it into a different category then its fine, you have time till final submission.. but if you are planning to change the design then i personally think its not a good idea since i liked the original concept a lot.. about the pose, for the final image you could show her in a fighting pose where she bends closer to the scorpion part and stabbing the prey with some weapon while those huge scorpion claws is holding it.. or you could even do it where is attacking two preys at the same time from different direction and so she has to twist in a dynamic way, i think you could figure out a perfect pose along the way.. shouldn't be a problem, atleast thats what i think.. Hope you find a solution

namnocilis
04-06-2009, 04:43 AM
or even a top 3/4th view will cover everything.. keeping the face closer to the camera and may be screaming at the camera :p and below scorpion part is holding on to the prey.. just my thought

Sorry, it been a while since the last time I updated. So basically, I went for a demon princess, not being happy with the overall result of the other mesh.
I'm not done yet with the modelling, but it should be over either tomorrow or after tomorrow.
The things I have to do is finish the armor and the belts that keep it in place, also the chains, the weapon, and a few other things.

I gotta agree with the previous comments...it seems a shame to scale back what ya had originally planned...what is the overall concern tho'?...texturing, detail pass, rigging/weighting?...if it's a specific thing maybe you could post for suggestions to still continue your original design...but if ya go with this, then it's still looks solid and I am sure you will pull something out of the bag!..

Hey James!

I have to agree with everyone! Stick with the woman/scorpion! :D I am also curious as to why exactly you're switching? I know you've been back and forth since the beginning with the design, but I really think you were getting there in these last few updates! (It's all part of the design process! ;))

Not that this new character is not nice. It just feels much more generic...I really like the original concept because if was something really different and out of the ordinary! And I think that's what made it stand out. You saw it and you were like: "Whoa! Awesome." And I think that's what you want at the end of the day!

But, it's your decision and we'll support you either way!

Thanks guys for your support!
As for the reasons I'm switching, it is mostly due to the fact that I didn't feel comfortable working with the model. It a few words, I was lacking enough ideas to complete it. Also The posing was giving me troubles. Although a few of you gave me great ideas, but when it came to put them in practise, it didn't work. Since originally I wanted to make a Demon Princess, I went for this idea rather than continue with something I knew I wasn't gonna be able to finish. I agree it was a good idea, I like it a lot, but it's gonna be impossible for me to finish it now. Also since I need to finish (and polish) a new demo-reel, I prefer showing something that I feel it looks better. Or at least, something I know I can say it's looks the way I wanted.
Thanks again everyone, I'll post more updates of the demon princess as soon as I can.

Cheers,

James

James i foresee a GREAT pose with the character...i think you should keep up the pace. And posing really shouldnt be a problem with zbrush lol. Come on now! Rigging is overated!

BTW I love a nice set of boobies. Pixelicious.

That's a sweet sculpt man, but the face is quite masculine compared to the body.

Hey James,

Glad to see you're still at it! Nice stuff, I really like the helmet, I think once detailled it's going to look very cool! I have to agree a bit with Sepulverture, her face does look really masculine... Are you still planning on giving her an awesome weapon? Keep it up!

Hi. Overall you did a grat job on sculpting. But i´m not sure about these hands on the breast, this has been done real often in the past.

Everything has been done I'd say. Its all about interpretation. This looks fine to me.

And about her looking masculine, maybe she does look a bit masculine right now, but isnt she supposed to be a demon? Hmm maybe she could have a demonic face :P

It's more classical than "Arielle the little scorpion girl", but it looks great too!

Sepulverture: Thanks for the comment, I'll be fixing it.

Chris: Hey Chris, I haven't been updating as often, trying to finish it at time lol

Sebastien: thanks for the comment. Actually I'm not trying to re-invent the wheel with this character, just having fun with it as much as I can.

Hugemalaka: Hey Mihail, thanks man! Your character looks awesome by the way. Good job pal

Irvin: Ya, nothing original, but I'm happy with the result. Hope I'll have enough time though.

So I've added an armored horse. I wanna give her that witch-king look (LOTR). I'm almost done with the horse, still got to work those legs. Also add the hair and tail. And polish up the armor.

For the Princess, got to add details to the armor, polish up the boots, and fix the head.
So got to rush it if I wanna finish it at time.
Also I'm posting the very basic base mesh for the weapon (A scythe)

C&C are more than welcome.

Cheers

Hey James,

Nice to see a new update! It's looking awesome! I really love the style of the horse! I has a great feel to it. Thought about the final pose yet? Have you started on the textures?

Keep up the great work!

Running out of time lol

Mihail: Thanks man! Concerning the horse, they fit together but I haven't fully show the whole armor she is wearing.

Chris: Hey! Thanks man!. I haven't start the textures yet. But the model its almost done, if today I can finish the armor, then tomorrow I'll be working on the head, and also fixing minor details. Then I'll be posing. The pose I choose its she riding the horse and ready to attack. I'll post it as soon as I get it done, probably by Monday, then I'll rush to finish it at time.
I love this kind of stress lol

Cheers,

James

Stefano: Thanks! If I would have enough time I would go giger style with it. Thanks for the idea :)

JohnWoo: Thanks man! I'll start textures probably tomorrow. I'm still have to bake but if everything goes ok it shouldn't take a lot. Hopefully

Mihail: Textures coming soon. That's for sure this week I'll be abusing either coffee or red bull like a mad man lol

So this is the last update before I bake and start texturing. One week to go, so hopefully I'll have enough time. I hope I'll have enough patience lol

The sort of dress behind her its still unfinished but since I haven't posed it yet I didn't want to add the folds on it. Tomorrow I'll be finishing the weapon.

Cheers,

James

Hey Chris, thanks man!
This is just a small update before I start texturing, but first I'll be fixing the normal maps since had a couple of artifacts here and there.
In the UV layout I left some empty space for some stuff I'm still missing. Luckily we have more days to finish.

Hopefully I'll have enough time to finish. So the diffuse it's almost finished, the alpha is already done, and all I still have to finish is the Specular ( In the image I didnt put the spec yet) Tonight or tomorrow morning I'll do the posing and polish up the textures. And then I'll start building the base.

Nice the textures are coming along alright for now, My complaint is that looking at your UV canvas, theres alot of unused space! Optimization man! :P Your stuff is nice and straight, but the person looking at your maps doesnt care about how lined up your stuff is, its basically gonna see how far you are willing to go to use up as much space as possible, cause lets face it, its a game character, and games are limited. Overall nice flow though! keep it up bro!

Hexahedron
05-16-2009, 02:08 AM
Thanks Mihail!
But actually the extra space will be used for the glow in the weapon, eyes and horse eyes, also a piece of the saddle, and the belt for the harness.

hey dude, good job on the diffuse. two things I noticed, I cant feel the occ in most area ( behind the armor, the hands on the titties..etc etc)

Dont know if you where planning to bake it od or render it.

Also the hands on her titties seems to be floating, doesnt feel like there actually grabbing the titties.

apar from that nice charact, keep it up your almost there :)

Hexahedron
05-16-2009, 01:12 PM
Hey Chris, thnaks man. Actually my intention was to do another pass of occ in 3ds max. My problem was that my computer couldn't handle an occ of good quality. It kept reheating and beeping after restarting lol but anyway, my solution was to bake everything per separate using a program called xnormal. The only problem was that I'm not used with it and also that since I was baking everything per separate, some shadows wouldnt appear, like the hands on her breasts.

one idea, put a little chain piercing linking her exposed nipples, the breast would look even better if accented a bit :)

Thanks Stefano. Good idea, actually I had something like it on my high poly, and even a piercing with a collar going from her nose up to the left ear, But it was a pain in the *** to get it right all together with the weapon and the horse in just 2048x, So at the end I took it out. The alpha didn't look right.

I'll definitely be making a new version of her for my demo, but for sure with a higher polycount.

Cheers
