First thumbnail sketch.
Bit about the character... This is a machine cyborg that has a sick habit of trying to cover itself with the flesh of living organisms. Over time the flesh binds with the machine making it stronger and tougher. This model also sports two arm mounted rail guns, making it a fearsome adversary.
Good luck to all!

Yeah there is probably a few things that wont match up probably and will need tweeking. In the modelling phase I will only be using this as a guide.
So here is the first pass of the concept. I'm still working on the gun/arm.

That guy has a pretty nice silhouette; lots of solid, interesting shapes going on. I'd suggest doing something with the forearms, though. They seem a little bland compared to the fairly interesting legs and hips.

The modelling is looking great so far! I'm also interested in a tri count.
And, always good to see another cyborg on the field!
tewicks
04-01-2009, 03:48 AM
The count is at around 5-6k at the moment.
I am modeling the high poly at the moment, so I am not too concerned with the count, I am just blocking everything out first before I get stuck into the detailing.
Will most likely keep the blocked out model for the low poly mesh before I get into the detail. That's the plan for the work flow at the moment. If you have any suggestions or improvements feel free to share :)
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9835/dw4genzenmodel05.jpg
Hey Aaron,
Cool design and concept, the model looks really great :D Maybe you can rise the arms positon to the head level and make the a bit large, to mantain the human form but with a little push on the design, more a wish than a critic :) Good luck and waiting for more updates! Cheers!!
namnocilis
04-01-2009, 09:55 AM
Awesome updates! nothing much to crit.. apart from pointing that some of the details you are modeling into the mesh could be easy done in zbrush and get it out of normals.. as you say, the tendency is to get going with detailing but you can save time by not modeling those details into the mesh at this stage.. if you can get everything done in 10k then it is fine, i am already getting that next gen character feel by just looking at the mesh.. Great going!

04-01-2009, 12:07 PM
Cheers guys,
Ferx - Thanks :) For this character I think I will try to vary from human-like proportions just to make it a bit more appealing and interesting. Although adjustments will probably need to be made, I will wait till I get the arms and guns on the model before I shift the shoulder area around too much. Cheers for the crit!
namnocilis - Cheers, This will the the high poly model, so I am not to worried about the polycount at the moment. The idea is to get most of the detail in the hard surfaced parts of the character in maya, then I will do most of the organic detailing in Zbrush. Will see how that goes, first time using this workflow. Glad you are getting the next-gen buzz out of this guy :)

this is really starting look look great! Cant get enough of the details around his arm.
The only thing that looks slightly out of sorts to me is that his soulder looks like it's locked into position? maybe slightly pulling out the edge of the shoulder pad where it meets the arm just a bit more so that he could posibly lift his arm if he wanted too?
Other than that, model is gooking grand, with good topology and really nice siloette!

Sweet. Textures are coming along nicely. The pose is real weird. very hard to see whats happening with his legs. His arms look like he is proding someone, but I feel those cannins that his arm are are more for blowing away his enemys, and nit proding them. Have you made a full rig for it, or just enough to pose it for this?
Galvaniseoil
04-29-2009, 09:43 PM
Hey man. This is coming along pritty nicely. I sorta agree with Xidon on the pose thing though. Sorta get the feeling that he is running at something and kinda turning and I really like the idea of the pose. Just that you really can't tell what the feet are doing that clearly. Maybe a different angle the shows the legs a little better would work for you.
Know you said it's not final yet. Just some food for thought.
Now lets bring it home!!!
QuantumPixel
04-30-2009, 04:14 AM
you definitely need to fix that pose on your current post page at the front of this thread I can hardly see what I am looking at. its killing your model. Makes it seam like your trying to hide the legs.
tewicks
04-30-2009, 04:23 AM
Yeah I have no intention of using that pose for the final, was merely a test. I probably should not have posted it as it was really just to show my progress on the diffuse map, not to get a crit on the pose xD

hey man, looking really cool.
This is more of an idea than a critique but have you thought about maybe changing the hue of his skin to more of a human kinda hue. Keep the saturation down but just hint at more of a fleshy idea about the skin. Just thinking at the moment that the skin doesn't distinguish itself from the machine enough.
Also bout the pose, I think I liked the pose before this one a little better, was a little more dynamic.
Anywho just little things that are ideas more than anything.
Looking very nice.
hakanpersson
05-03-2009, 12:31 PM
I'd like to see a winning pose much reversed from what you have done it. Much more identical posing of his legs and up his torso too. This is not a character that I feel rants around much, he stands there, with a grand posture and his huge weapons, rather waiting for his enemies to come. He could perhaps hold one of his weapon in a vertical relaxed pose and the other horizontal. Then maybe just a little rotate his torso so he compensates for the insane weight of the weapon.
I prefer camera from a lower perspective, perhaps even as much as just below the guns.
The color theme of your textures are nice, but I would save the glow for his weapons alone. You could try tweaking tones and values a bit, like adding a slightly tone of color to the skin, and maybe brightening the metal some, maybe play more with it's contrast. Cut the white stripe behind his head also, it mismatches.
You should perhaps increase the contrast and reduce the ambient occlusion some too. Lesser amount of occlusion might increase the impression of size.
And finally a couple minor tweaks on the model. Tweak away some of his high heels on his foot, and compensate by giving him a more relaxed leaned back pose. Plus, fatten up the ammo some, bigger bullets=nastier monster, ya!
Uh.. that was quite a lot of info. But maybe it will help you some. Great work anyhow. Best of luck.
Xidon
05-03-2009, 11:29 PM
Hey looking great. Base is finally coming along too
I agree with hakanpersson about the posing. Make it more of a hero shot, as if his is posing rather than in action. One arm could be turn up as if grabbing for a cigar in his mouth but no cigar. The other facing toward the ground, chest poked out a bit with some torso twist.
Looking good though. I also agree with keeping the glow just for his guns.
Galvaniseoil has a good though on the hue of his skin. I think so far the model is all a little too desaturated. Hard picking colour theme though, especially with the colour palette of CGS.

Cheers for sharing your crits and suggestions guys :D
I'm taking everything into consideration, and as I'm sure you all know, there is only a week left, so for actual model changes etc I will see if I can fit it in
Galvaniseoil - Hey man, skin could use some more color I agree. My initial aim was to make it look dead and decaying, still a lot of work to go on the textures though, so I will be sure to keep working at it.
hakanpersson - The more info the better ;) Thanks dude, always good to get someone else's perspective on a project. I quite liked the pose I did, but I also havn't had that long to take a look at it, so I will have a go with your suggestions, see if that's a better alternative. I have a question, and I hope that someone can help me...
I have been having some problems when rending my model with the normal map applied in mental ray (maya). It is inverting in some places, but only from certain camera angles. This is happening in some places where I have mirrored my UV's, but my normal map is fine and I am thinking that something is going wrong in the rendering as it all displays fine in the viewport.
If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure it's just some box I forgot to tick etc :(

In my limited knowledge of uv's, when you mirror your geometry the uv's get reversed. This can have the effect. Not sure if you've done this, but when you mirror your geo to get your normals the right way round you have to go in and flip them round. To check this you can press this button:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr290/Galvanisedoil/Untitled-1.jpg
It can show up if your uv's are flipped. Blue means good. Red means bad.
Don't know if I'm preaching to the choir but thought I'd post just in case. Hope you sort it out soon.

Yeah cheers man, I was aware of that, and I used to think it was the problem, but seen as it diplays correctly in the viewport, and also at some angles when rendered, it leads me to believe that something else is the problem.
here is a quick render, so once again, the light it hitting the gun as if the surface was inverted.

Figured it out, stupid mistake. Had to invert the surface normals of the parts that were playing up. Now everything is working fine. Moving onto the base now, should have updates tonight. Cheers for those who helped.

Hey all, just thought I would post a 360 playblast of genzen.
Will post some stills later as the gif does it no justice.
Things to note: Ammo belt is missing as the pose is not final, texture is still not finished.
C&C welcome.

Looking real good dude. Im glad you toned down the glow on the ammunition. The base is looking real good now. And as MartinNielsen said, it works real well with your character.

Looking good dude. be careful though cause some parts are blowing out a bit, like his chest and top of legs and gun. Other than that is great. Good work dude.

Well this has been a fun adventure, hope everyone else had a good time working on their projects too.
The time is up for me, so here are most of my final images. I think I will only revisit something if anyone can point out something that is very wrong ;)
C&C welcome as always, and good luck to those putting in the hard hours till the final deadline.

Cheers fellas!
I can't wait to see how everyone does. All the  emotions are making me thirsty!
Big thanks to everyone who gave me crit and support through this, could not have done this without you all.
I have revised some of my final images since I posted them, forgot to plaster them with all the required logos, contact details etc... shame though, takes a bit away from the images having to much txt on them (so i made the font real small :D)

Thanks again guys,
Darkra - Thanks bro, really just did heaps of research for the lighting etc, was pretty crap at lighting/rendering before I started on this project. Pretty good that I am learning so much :D
MartinNielse - Cheers :)
hugemalaka - Yeah, it feels very good to be done! Its great that I was able to do this while also working. Glad you like it :)
