These look pretty BA, T! The 3rd image down has something very dark and powerful about it...could it be the dark wings? i dunno but it speaks to me as well as the 6th pic with the "ALT" on it, looks like some demon samurai armour. maybe combine the two? and as for the head? lucky #9.
oh, its about time you posted. now give us more!

Hey "T". I really like your exploration with simple geometry. That's pretty cool focusing on value to see what comes up! I am finding the horn shape and style to be difficult myself, so many options...

Hey Sogs, I like the second doodle with the huge black wings, be neat to see some transparency with veins and blood vessels. I really like the number 1 head, the wide pitbull style gives it an animalistic primal look. keep it up

I like these sketches alot. the top head is my fave. The second head is a bit busy in my opinion. I only have one crit for you, i think he looks a bit friendly. maybe more teeth and un-even? But then again...i dont know demons, for all i know he is a nice guy and loves to have bbqs on the weekend and dont tell him you like the chicago bulls...thats adifferent story altogether.
But seriously, this is looking pretty wick!

Hey Tamas, a question of curiousity... how big do you actually draw your sketches like these heads? Is the screen size pretty close to the actual sketch size on paper?
Looking very cool! Keep it up. :)

Thanks Shawn! Yeah I'd say theyre fairly close to how they are on screen.. theyre probably a little smaller on paper... thumbnail size... I use a 0.5mm mechanical pencil so you can maybe even judge by the thickness of the lines.

Still thinking of bodies...
Heres an attempt at something non-humanoid shaped which is what I'd prefer... this ones not about the details, it was mostly just to see how a body shaped like this would feel... I'm not too fond of it for many reasons but it might help with future brainstormings...

Hey man! Remember you from last year, very nice work.. Congrats on the placement!
I like what you have going in the last one.. I like how he looks like hes halfway out of a nest/caveopening under his wings, just waiting to jump out and catch you. that could make for some really cool lightplay. The sideview looks dynamic also, need some work maybe, but its just a rough i know. You definately have some nice ideas to keep for further experimentation. Looking forward to whats coming up! Hi Tamas. Everything is looking great so far. My posts still have a waiting period for the moderator to okay it, so hopefully this reply shows up while it's still valid, lol.
I was thinking, in response to the fact that you seem unsatisfied with the feet/legs, I think you should try scaling up the feet in some way, giving them a wider base. If this guy is really big, which I'm guessing he's supposed to be, he's going to need big, powerful, wide feet to support all that weight. I originally was almost picturing something a bit more hoof-like with a solid flat base, but the way you painted those claw-hooves I think could work too, you just might want to try beefing them up. Or you could go the opposite direction and shrink the feet and lower legs down to skinny pads, making it look more fast and agile, like a spider. Last, maybe some type of single spike talons that stick in the ground? I think they look okay right now, but I think the fact that you seem unssatisfied with the feet might have to do with how they relate proportionally to the legs and the body, and how our brains might be responding to them, as far as what they are telling us about this creature.
You're clearly a great artist so I'm sure you'll polish it up, but I figured I'd just throw this out there to maybe give you a bit more to consider. Keep up the good work.

Great progress!
You've got some detailing ahead of you to skulpt all those small nooks and cranies and recesses in this creature's skin. I don't know why I assumed this was 2D. I have full confidence you'll get it done, we have a little less than a month to go
You mentioned you weren't satisfied with the feet, perhaps if you made the pose of the feet more dynamic to add some movement to the sculpt, you could have a foot or two raised or bent at the ankle/wrist bones and flex the toes to show that it's feet are bearing it's enormous weight as it walks.

This is looking hot Tamas. The only thing that bugs me is the triangular shape on the middle of the horns. Could use a poly or two to be smoothed.
Are you planning to open the mouth for the beauty shot for example?
Keep it up! This is sure gonna be awesome in colour! :)
Soggyclog
04-13-2009, 08:45 AM
Thanks guys!
Thanks for the advice Segvoia, I'll definately try to do stuff like that when it comes time to pose him.
I added two polies to the ugly horn-triangle Adrien, it does look better, though I think in the final renders we'll be too far to appreciate it's smoothness. And at this point I don't really plan on opening his mouth for any of the renders. It's built to open so I could but I would have to put more detail inside the mouth... I can live with it closed.
Thing is I'm leaving for vacation on the 2nd... so I have to be done everything ten days before the official deadline :surprised
Anyway, got the body torso thing pretty close to modelled, except for the shoulder part and some small tweaks. Tried to integrate the logo onto its back but I had to stretch it etc so you can't even recognize it... looks more like a bug on his back... oh well. No time to change it... next up, legs :)

amazing job so far Soggyclog. I am really curious about your workflow. Do you plan on zbrushing or sculpting this character? if so do you build your low final low poly mesh and then sculpt that?.... do you have any retopology in your workflow?... or are you just going straight to textures? ( wich I suspect are going to be crazy awesome ).
I saw your previous DMW entry and the end result was stunning it had a really nice painted quality to it. Hope you dont mind all the questions man, again great looking stuff and Looking forward to end result.

Well I had a lot of work and other things the whole week so couldnt really work on this till today. Got the legs modelled... I have to do some heavy optimizing since I miscalculated and need more triangles for the wings than I have left.
FranciscoAlvarezDelgado: Thanks man, yea you pretty much got it right. I'm doing it oldschool where I do all the modelling first, then zbrush it. I do believe the retopologizing method is better for many reasons but my crappy computer would probably die in the process and I find retopologizing to be boring robot work... this way at least I know I won't have any surprises or whatever. My zbrushing wont be overly intricate due to lack of time. I'll only do enough to make the mesh look high res in the final render then add the fine detail in the textures. I prefer to spend most of my time on lighting and rendering as I feel it'll have a way bigger impact on the final image.

His legs look pretty sweet! I am trying myself to get better with that workflow of building the entire mesh so it does not need retopo, I just feel when you use a blocked in mesh it lets you have a little more freedom incase you decide to change the design up before retopo. Looking forward to seeing the textures on this guy!
Soggyclog
04-18-2009, 09:31 PM
Thanks Greg... yeah I agree, the retopo workflow gives you much more freedom and for the most part a much more snug fit between the low poly and sculpt, therefore your projection will in most cases look better. That said I'm not too worried in this case cause I wont be making shape changes in zbrush, only defining smooth areas and sharper edges over the shape thats already there.

Hey Soggyclog thanks a lot for the workflow explanation. I agree with you in a lot of things.. retopo work is boring, I really do not like that part of the process man...
Also awesome textures and lighting can make a good model look incredible.
I also agree with a comment greg made about just having a simple block mesh and sculpting from it gives you a great amount of creative freedom...I just find it a good practice to hear about other peoples workflows, there is a lot to learn from just different aproaches to stuff..thanks again man.
As far as the character goes, great updates man, I like the feather wings..the opacity mask hold up their res pretty well... Really looking forward to textures and the final renders with all the bling on them. Great stuff
