Actually I think the lack of transparency in the series is because it saves time while animating. In dragonball they like to cut a lot of corners. If you watch some of the movies they actually take time to draw the caustic effect and the reflections on the surface of the ball. I think it was movie 14 (10th anniversary special) that I was looking at for reference, There are some good scenes with Son Gokou looking thru the dragonball. The only thing that may be off is the refractive index for the material. I set it up for crystal but I don't really remember what the balls are made out of. If anybody knows I what they are made out of please post. :)

nice stuff. the scene itself is a bit too bright though. what did you render this in and how long did the render take?

is that image anti aliasesd? the edges on the ball look really jagged, same in the refraction. i as just curious.

Very cool effect, I'd keep picking on that image if i were you. The lighting is a little too blown out. Gotta love Mental Ray.
