Hey there!
Well it's good for you to participate in the challenge. But maybe you should start with something easier?I mean, the only advice that i can give is that:planning and neat understanding of what you want to substantiate is the first thing to do before you start any project. So in your case,i think you should start collecting references of various shiny mettals to select what exactly you want your surface to look like. Also try to define the best lighting, position of a robot, position of a camera, film's format, focal length and so forth.Along with gathering refernces you can also start planning what shaders you will have to use for it.Will you need something special or standart shading models will make a good metall.I think,it's much easier to change UV layout or model's topology then endless dashing back and forward looking for something that will "look good",withought actuall realising of what you want.Anyway don't give up and it'll be ok.
Btw,it's just my opinion, don't take it serious :)

Thanks for the info. Well, i actually got rushed and inspired to join the contest simply because if i don't ill be slacking off 3d and maybe just sketching around but yeah I guess I was also wrong to rush into it so now I've had troubles. Well someone suggested to make my renderings great instead since it is after all a "modeling" challenge so now I'm studying more about lightings and renderings which i already know a little bit of :D
