View Full Version : Sketch of a head
Nobody-Here 03-18-2009, 09:06 PM Hello :)
I just made a sketch of a head, because I want to improve my anatomy skills and now I'm curious what you think of it. Any comments or critique are very much appreciated. :D
Btw, photo reference was used. Picture of Charlize Theron doing an ad for Dior.

No replies yet, I see. Too bad.. :( Hope someone will take the effort of giving me some comments or critique. :)
I just wanted to share a update with you. I have roughly blocked in the shadows and highlights. And again all comments and critique are very much appreciated. :)

Hi there!
I think you're off to a great start.
One thing I notice was the facial anatomy is off. Try fliping the image the other way and you'll norice the imbalanca of the face. I'll save you the trouble ;)

Notice the eyes are too close. I also find the top half of her head too short.
And the lighting looks off. The highlight around her chick should have been more under the eye.
I did a quick paint over.

(I think i might have made her head abit too big XP)
I hope this help!

Thank you for your comments, it's really appreciated! :)
I already thought there was something strange about the face, but now you flipped the picture I can see where things are going wrong. Thank you for correcting, that really is useful. Most of the times I do see that there is something wrong with the eyes, or the nose, or whatever, but I don't know exactly how I should change it to make it look right. So it is a big help to see your changes. :)
I noticed you changed the lips too, it's looking good. ^^ So I'll see if can manage to draw something like that myself.
Thank you again. :D

Hi Bianca,
Another thing you should consider: Draw two lines that follow the topogrophy of the face from the corners of her mouth and up to the eyes. That is a good way to messure the placement of mouth/nose/eyes. If you would have seen "your face" from the front, one of her eyes would be placed very close to her nose while the other is normal. Hrm, do you understand what i mean?
I suggest you wait with shadows and painting until you got the sketch/anathomy right :)
Regards and good luck,
Johan

Hi Johan,
Thank you for your comments. :) I understand what you mean with the lines. I replaced the eyes and I think it looks a bit better now. Although, her left eye (from your viewpoint) looks too small, so I have to change that. And her right eyebrow looks still a bit off. I wanted it to look like she has raised it, but I guess it looks more like a displaced eyebrow then a raised one. :p
Thank you again for your comments. :)
Regards,
Bianca
And here is the update:

Good start Bianca.
One of the things i do when i do sketches is i block like crazy, forget the details and get blocking, especially in different poses, change the shape of the eyes/bigger/smaller/rounder/squarer, same with tthe rest of the face, a good tip for blocking (or thumbnailing) is it should take you seconds to rough something out, there you can get an idea of whats going on not only in your head but down on paper..
I could be wrong but it seems that your trying to get it right first time, it never works that way, just chuck out some roughs and get a feel until you find you have it in your eye, then go in for the finer touches..
My crit would be that the features are too small for the head.

Is it this shot by any chance? If yes there are definitely problems. I'll repeat the advice and say get the line drawing correct 1st. If you are not using a grid to train your eye, use photoshop to it's full advantage and drop this over your sketch periodically to 1st make sure your feature placement is correct, and then to make sure you are drawing her lips, not some generic girl lips. If you don't have the anatomy right you aren't going to be able to get the shadows right (since they depend on the anatomy) and you'll just end up frustrated.
Hope that helps

Thank you for your comment. Yes it is that picture, but I only used it as a reference I didn't want to draw her exactly like that. :) Altough, the lips still need some more work, they don't seem to follow the shape of the face. :hmm: But thank you for mentioning the grid, I'll keep that in mind.

See, the thing is, if you can't draw anatomy accurately (and you can't, yet) you really need to draw her "exactly like that". Unless, of course, you don't care that she is deformed :) . If you just want people to say "oh cool", then just finish it and post it in your portfolio. If you want feedback and to develop your skills, then post it here but really really try to get it to look right.
Cheers
D.
p.s. - the reason your lips don't look like they follow the shape of the face is, of course, because neither your lips nor the shape of her face belong to Ms Theron...

Hello Darcy,
Thank you for your critique. :) I did a total redraw of the face and paid more attention to the facial features of Ms Theron and I think it looks better now. It still doesn't look exactly like her, but the anatomy seems more accurate to me. :)
Thank you again for your critique.

Bianca

Hey, thought I'd add my two cents. This is what I see in you image: the nose is two small and the angle is off, plus I think you're having foreshortening issues; the lips are too far to the left, not wide enough, and I think the top lip is slightly larger and closer to the base of the nose; her eyes in the reference are more slanted than you have drawn and the pupil should be lower and touching the bottom lid; the left eyebrow is too high and should be more connected with the end of the nose;her jawline appears to be too low on the viewer's left; the top of the ear is sticking too far out from her head and also has foreshortening issues;the jaw on the viewer's left also needs to stick out farther from the neck while the neck on the viewer's right should be a little farther from the ear; the ends of the the drawn shoulders also slant upwards more; the right [to the viewer] eye is to close to the left so when you make the nose wider as it is in the picture that eye should also be shifted; and lastly the top of the forehead on the viewer's left should protrude father and slant down to help emphasize the tilt in her head.
This is of course my opinion and may not be 100% accurate but it should bring you close enough. Don't forget to flip the image as you sketch to see the issues. Don't be discouraged, as you fix one thing it will often help fix a couple other things so keep working on it. Hope this helps

I've been sick for a while, so didn't have the chance to make any improvements and now I have a lot of homework to catch up to, so it may take a while for I have a chance to redraw some aspects of the face.
But I would like to thank everyone for their comments. It's really appreciated! :D
Hope to update soon. :)

Bianca
