View Full Version : Undead Witch wip. HELP!
doghateburger 03-18-2009, 02:43 PM Hey guys.
Looks like i finally have the balls to post here for critics. xP
Anyways, I'm working on this new piece. It's actually a friends design that I'm doing a painting off.
Here's the original (My friend's)

Here is what I have so far

It originally started out as a doodle, but as I work on it, the more I wanna make the piece look complete.
My main concern right now is the background. I don't know what I should do for it. I was thinking of something along the lines of a grave or cave.
And suggestions, constructive critics, tips, advise would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!
I like her design and her pose. I was wondering if you could expand the canvas size so that we could also see her right hand ( right now it's cut off a bit.) As for background, I like the grave idea IMHO. Good start so far and hope to see update!
Cheers,
Phuong.

Just something I've learned You should always pick your background colors first it is much easier to design a character with the color mood already set in place and also it is hard to add color once the character is painted on white. The colors you choose for the background may end up completely changing the feel of the character.

For the moment, try picking a background color the same as the shadow colors on your witch; probably a dark, dull, green/brown tone - that shouldn't be too glaring. Then sit down on a new layer and sketch out a background. Hide it, open a new layer and sketch a different background. Do half a dozen, only give yourself a few minutes each so you concentrate on big shapes and shadows. Then pick the best one to develop further.
Have fun.

Rosethorn: I took your advice and made the canvas bigger. Thank you!
Bouke285: I usually pick out the background colour first. This one started out as a doodle which I had no intention of finishing it. But i guess I was wrong! And thank you! I'll definitely be careful when I work out the background.
DArcy1: Thanks for the tip! I gave it a try and I think I have an idea for a background now.
Here's an update on what I have:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b25/phantomking/practice343-2.jpg
I decided to put her in a damage/underground/ruin/crypt like place. I want to get the "I"M ALIVE" mood going, except not in the funny way.
Tell me what you guys think Any suggestions? critics?
Also, I'm gonna need some help with this. How would I go about *smoothing* the image without losing the texture?
Usually I would call it quits here, but I really want to improve. I need a way to make the background look more solid. More realistic. Less fuzzy and blur out. I've try using the air brush, along with hard edge brushes to make the objects look more solid.
Any advice and tips on those would be greatly appreciated as well!
Thanks!

Yes, this has some definite visual interest now, it makes me care enough to ask "who is she, what is she emgerging from and why?". Is she walking out of a burning building? Did she set it herself as an act of revenge? Did someone try to kill her and fail?
You definitely need to finish this one :-)
