Nice to see so much action going on in these forums.
I've tried to wrap my mind around this years theme and I've chosen to do a female Norm Warlord.
I've thought of combining a fairly goodlooking female character with a crab, so that is what I am aiming for.
Crabs are, in my mind, a perfect metaphor for 'war' as they possess natural body armor and natural "weaponry", hence the choice of crabs. They're probably pretty irritating in numbers, as well :)
Either she is half crab or she is carried around by a horde of crabs. Does any one of these options break the rules? :P

Did a quick pulltogether of stuff for the Final Illustration, which I will begin after I've found a more interesting silhouette and done the Modelling sheet.
I've thought out a backstory for the concept which is based on these characters not being part of the conflict at all. They are forced into the conflict by this initial contact with the robots which are probing the world for new sources of energy to exploit.
These creatures have lived prosperous lives in a desolate matriarchal territory for quite some time.
What I am trying to depict here is this initial contact with the outside world, which soon turns into a fullblown colonial war.
I used a lot of horizontal image elements since I want to convey calmness and tranquility.
Since these creatures are "one with their surroundings and nature" I aim at integrating them more into their natural habitat. So the environment will probably crawl with small crabs, weird fish and other stuff you might expect in a tropical beach kind of environment.
What do you guys think? C&C welcome :)

Studied some fish and shells. And got a small sheet for materials for later use.

Hey man.. I totally dig the story behind it how she just stumbles upon a bot. I think the idea behind the design is cool also.. I think the body looks more like a "slip on" dress and not so much like a unified creature.. Maybe work on the transfere from the creature to human form. Well i guess its in its early stages also, just keep up the good work!

Yes, you are quite right. I am trying to wrap my mind around the issue of her looking dressed up in a big costume. In my mind it all depends on how I would perform the transition and maybe add lower-part-coloring and materials to the upper body and vice versa.

Started out my modelling sheet. Really makes one think second about design choices :P
I am thinking about equipping her with a large sea shell of this kind:
I though she would carry this large shell with her left arm, much like a hermit crab.
Keeping the pointy sharp spikes on the shell to indicate that it would be some kind of armor/defensive weapon but also a "personal handbag" where she stores all her stuff :)
What do you guys think? Please give me comments on this idea as I am a bit unsure of what to do next.

As for critics Her head seems a bit small for me. Will you put any armor,hair,accessory? It might help to improve character. Details on figure are very nice. I think its gonna be a great figure to look at! :beer:

I did the head small on purpose, but maybe I did the head a bit too small. It's easy to get lost in the details hence losing sight of the wholeness of the image.
The left arm is experimental at the moment. It serves the same purpose as the tail of a hermit crab (which swells inside the sea shell). Since I would like to equip her with some kind of additional accessories I wanted her to carry a big sea shell around for ... amazon-mermaid-crab kind of purposes. But it may also be used as an armor.
We'll see. I'll try to do my best designing along the way.

I liked how you did the hiparea better in the first one actually. i think the recent one devides the figure up in two even more. The straipes over her chest looks quite symetrical and a bit plastic, not very organic. About the head size.. A smaller head will make for a larger body its as simple as that, right now the only contrast that bothers me is between the upper body(chest shoulders) against her small head, it makes her look beafy and not so feminine, totally up to you if you'd like it that way of course. Thats the only reason the head looks small also. The rest, the lower body would look bigger if you'd tone down the shoulders to fit the head though, Making her entire figure look bigger (a good thing if you ask me). her arms look awesome if you ask me :) The claw is taking some nice shapes and detail, the other arm looks very organic and translucent in a nice way, maybe combine that with some of what you had before? Nice progress! ;) Keep it up!

I took your advice on several issues, such as the shoulders. Made the upper body a bit smaller in and fixed some issues I had with the tail.
I want to keep the "plastic looking stuff" on the upper body though, since that is what I recon mainly keeps her looking feminine since it forms a reflection indicating feminine chest :)
Tried an experimental kind of exoskeletal spine-thingy which I thought could look cool at the waist.
probably the last update for today. thanks for the crits and keep em coming if you have any.
great process so far. to my mind the creature looks a bit like a woman in a crab,sea creature-suit. maby you could embed her head a bit more in her upper part of the body...

Really liking the render on this, you've got the various textures down nicely... think perhaps the last version is a bit busy, but I do like the head design a lot more in that last one. The boody area is the main issue I have, you've lost that nice outline/silhouette in among all the busy lines, that when I look at it, my eye can't find any one comfortable place to rest. I'm sure there's a comfy medium between the two.

the last sketch is nicely detailed but it looks more like a Demon and i thought you are making a norm warlord hmm.. upto the sketch before this it was fine but all those details in the last sketch is giving an entire different feel, i still prefer the coloured version on the tropical environment in first page, suited more with the backstory.
eager to see how u take it further..

Hey very nice design.. I love it.. A lot of things you are doing to her making it look realistic looking.. I love the shells on her body.. Keep up the good work and can't wait to see the final product, take care for now.

Details and textures looks very sweet but im agree full body is a bit busy or undefined. This reminds me men of Davy Jones which is good :D . Keep it up man!

Another update of the creature named Smörgåsen as working title. (This means 'The Sandwich' in Swedish which I chose since the character nowadays looks like some kind of chaotic sandwich I would make in times of panic hunger)
I feel a bit bad for not having been as responsive in other peoples threads as I should have. I promise to get better! :)
Working with kind of a busy character, I have decided to let my modelling sheet be my image for creating concepts and changing back and forth between POVs as I go along. Image in the upper right is a concept i made before starting the sideview POV of the modelling sheet.
Zephyri: I noticed I had some nice textures going, so I kept on copying, pasting and deforming to find new shapes. You may be right in me having lost a bit of focus in the overall shape, although this feels more motivating to me as it is more of a challenge to try to define the elements after creating a suitable chaotic structure to work from :)
namnocilis: Thank you! Yes, maybe I have to change race. Although I feel this more resembles something that would evolve out of my backstory. It has no natural enemies, hence the structure of the body has started evolving in ways only nature could foresee.
