So I have a question, that is whats the best way to specifically make long leaf pine trees for real time. i know there are programs such as onyx which make beasts of a tree and there is that speedtreeCAD program but to get it to work for real time you need to buy the sdk and that is a wonderful 5k to much. That leaves with doing it by hand, which is acceptable except taht i need to make like at least 50 variations. I have some ideas about possiable ways box modeling and extruding along splines or even lofting. perhaps at last resort.

Mainly just trying to put my question out and see what others attack plan would be for this project. I would love to hear back.

if it matters the trees are to be exported to be put into torque with mid to high detail with low poly count... what wonderful specs. heh.

I've been modeling some pretty low-res trees lately, around 800 tris each.

For a mid-res pine tree a similar process would make sense, build the first tree from scratch, getting all the UVs right and the basic layout, then modifying it to make variations. I found it pretty easy to select each branch plane (or shell) and rotate it about its branch using a vertex 3d snap.

A couple recent threads about real-time trees...

A cool script by Shawn Lewis for building the trunk, it adds UVs for you, and the branching is very adjustable...

Good luck. Post your results if you can.
