Final Illustratio!!! :scream:
Thanks to you all and good luck!!!
Since the Norms were pushed back entirely to their cities, they reinitiated an old nature magic. It enables them to eliminate their foes already far in the heartland. Since this magic demands the sacrifice of a newborn human being, it was forbidden ages ago and disappeared into oblivion. Only the great despair that came with the beginning of the Fourth Dominance War gave reason to revive the disputed magic.
Right after birth, the newborn child must be poisoned with a cyclamen and left in a magical stone circle on a hill in the heartland.
After some months, nature takes posession of the child and grants him tremendous power the power of nature and life. Part animal, part human, part plant, the cyclamen grows out of the soil.
A single glance is enough to transform the life energy of the attacker into natures energy.
From time to time, the parents or relatives of the once human child come to present oblations. However, except for a few characteristics, the cyclamen does not have any humane features. It has now become a part of nature. It can reach an age of over 500 years before it withers.
concepts are coming soon....
some very quick sketches
my idea is to equip the cyclamen with huge moose horns...
i added some details. and thinking about the main structure of the cyclamen and how it is connected with the ground. My next step is to elaborate the creatures head (finaly i can draw some details:) )
03-19-2009, 04:26 PM
Lol cant belive no one has commented on this,
awsome stuff , original concept to say the least
Lucky youre not going for 3D because of the tri count ^^
Good luck mate, nice work
03-19-2009, 04:48 PM
This is a great concept, I think I would try mixing up the look in the thumbnails though, the tops, they all seem too similar. I like the Shaman feel to a few of them. Nice work and good luck!
Kharn-ivor: thank you for the first post:beer:
Chachi: thank you. yeah your right the thumbs are all too similar. i`m working on the upper part of the body.
sketching around to free my mind- and now i will go to bed....
03-20-2009, 02:35 AM
Insanely cool stuff! The story is well thought out and the excecution is neat. Well done :)
03-20-2009, 04:30 PM
great story! it will be delightful to watch it's progress i'm sure. give us more :D
hey guys thanks...
i worked on the upper part of the body and tried some different looks... please help me to decide..
...and here is number 4.
on the left side you can see how the bodys would be connected to the ground...
critics and comments are most welcome!
03-20-2009, 07:34 PM
Looks good !crazy:eek:
03-20-2009, 09:04 PM
great style man keep up the good work, itīs still veryt rough so i donīt have any crits right now.
03-21-2009, 12:19 AM
You've got some great things going on in here, I can't wait to see them translated into 3d.
Thanks Adam but i have to disapoint you, they all rest in only two dimensions:)
i wasn`t quite happy with the silhouette of my character, therefore i made again some thubnails. i think one ore two are worth continuing.. which is your favorite?
03-21-2009, 06:23 PM
hi Mraaflaub . the 10 looks interesting , great silhouette
03-21-2009, 08:54 PM
I'm new all over the place to cg society and the posting. I also painfully missed the 2d in the title of your thread.
I think you should pick 3 or four of these silhouettes and develop them more. They all have potential.
03-21-2009, 11:20 PM
i would say 1 and 9 look interesting to me.
03-22-2009, 01:26 AM
I really like them all but for some reason I keep looking back at #1 for some reason. I also like #5. Great job.
but i`d like to read some more comments..... :D
03-22-2009, 01:08 PM
i'm an instant admirer of your nature man concept.
about upper bodies; 5 and 6 are better i think for they have longer heads that fit to your long nature creature i think.
03-22-2009, 01:16 PM
I like the "S" silhouette of the 3
the 1 and 9 are cool also. I like the spikes coming out of the body in no1
I like the headpiece in no5, it looks like more aggressive, like a carnivore plant
03-22-2009, 02:01 PM
I think No. 1 is the most interesting, followed by No. 11. Nice job so far.
thank you very much for your support..
I mixed some shilouettes basically nr. 1 and 11. (thanks simon- they were also my favorites) but i think number 1 is too static for a character already stucked to the ground, therefore I tried to include the "S"- form from nr. 3 (good advise aelwine:thumbsup: )
i think i`ll work with 12 14 15.
concepts are coming soon
03-22-2009, 11:19 PM
Hey man! I really like your idea and also the story behind it. I think you've taken it so far you should maybe develope some thumbs more into larger roughs, its hard to pick one of the latest batch becouse they are very similar and the details that set them apart are hard to make out. I really like what you have going right now, i'd like to see you take it to the next step until i can give some good feedback. Very nice work so far. Keep it up!
03-22-2009, 11:58 PM
14 would look nice, and I agree Frozzt about the sketches
03-23-2009, 03:33 PM
cool concept and sketch man!~ i like the wing-like things as big as the ones on the #5 reply~
and i think the highlight in the newest five is the shreds/tatters~keep it up!
hi guys thankks for the comments. i started with my first concepts. here the first one based on thumb nr.14. there are more to come
03-23-2009, 05:20 PM
Nice and original concept :applause:
03-23-2009, 06:03 PM
I think you're on the right track
Too add a a bit of dynamism you could perhaps try to bend the human part a bit forward or just break a bit the impression that everything is happening on the same flat vertical plane (the whole body, arms, hanging fabric and sprouting branches seem kind of aligned at the moment)
03-24-2009, 01:01 AM
Sweet! Now thats more like it! I dont really have anything to crit right now.. Just keep an open mind and keep implementing new ideas as they come! Looking forward to see new stuff!
here`s an other one...
but i`am stll not very happy ..... i have to do more!!
and an other.....
last night i had an idea for a new concept....
and i will post it soon.
just a sketch page to show my new approach. more spectific drawings are coming soon..
here`s a quick sketch to show my characterI`ll work with.
And now it`s time to gear up for the war:buttrock:
04-02-2009, 02:50 PM
wow very unique man I like the pose :buttrock: :buttrock:
here my first helmet/head concepts...
more to come...
04-03-2009, 11:06 AM
The last one hanging in the tree got really some evil touch. Looks a bit Burton-like.
...an other one....
04-03-2009, 03:59 PM
The middle one is awesome crazy designs you have there great work
04-03-2009, 04:14 PM
Beautiful sketches..Love your style..and of course your concepts.
04-04-2009, 10:46 PM
I also stuck to your second helmet design.
04-04-2009, 11:27 PM
I really like the second one but i think the third one matches your character the best
thanks a lot guys-
blester: my thoughts. i think i`ll continue with the third one, but maybe i`ll add some iron elements from the middle one.
that`s it for today....
I`am not quite happy with the creatures back. I`ll work this out on my next concept.
And it`s still missing some fedder-thing on the head...
and as always c&c are most welcome thx :)
04-09-2009, 01:10 AM
I love how heartless and unrelenting it looks.
Reminds me of pyramid head from Silent Hill. He was shear terror and they managed to pull it off without giving him eyes are facial features.
I think you're on the right track here, I'm keeping a close watch on this one. ;)
I am lucky to hear that because that`s exactly my goal. Because my creature is a sort of tree-nature thing i want to give him a mystical existence. it notices his surrounding only with his moose-horn-amulets and with the simple knowing that somebody or something is approaching. It`s hard to describe, but if we say that trees or plants are living creatures it`s also difficult to understand. An this is the kind of feeling i want to show with my character.
04-09-2009, 04:10 PM
Fantastic design man, thats stuff I dig, nice silhouette add with those bones on the back
thanks nellement, I`am glad you like it....
in my next concept drawing i`ll show kind of an altar in which the newborn gets sacrificed and the cyclamen comes to life..(--> story page 1)
04-10-2009, 12:36 AM
Nice work here :) You show some unique designs. Remember the add some life and character to the figure as well.
04-10-2009, 01:14 AM
wow, this looks really good, and more important, it seems to fit everything together well; the story, your artwork. I think this has the potential for a great peace of art. Keep on going!
04-10-2009, 12:24 PM
I like the first pose in post #50, it looks brooding and evil. Good character, developing well
04-10-2009, 01:20 PM
WOW you have so many cool sketches and concepts here! Can't wait to see more
MartinNielsen: thanks for the commenrt but it is my intention to give him kind of a dead and uninvolved look.
DarkBlueArt:  we will see
NH: merci beaucoups
BaronImpossible: thanks I`m honoured to hear that from you
Phil99: thanks, me too;)
04-12-2009, 11:53 AM
The face in post #49 looks great and the overall design is really nice. But I don't like what's happening on top of the head. Keep going, you're doing great!
04-12-2009, 09:34 PM
I love trees and I love this. Great job!
04-12-2009, 11:08 PM
Love the idea, coming along really wicked... keep it up!
04-13-2009, 04:42 PM
nice man! you got some really cool designs here! I'm like where it is going in the latest update!
yakonusuke: this won`t be the final head design i worked on it....thx
I`m working now on the profile-views for the modeling sheet...
by the way, does anybody knows where to download the Dominance War IV- Logo??
So long
04-14-2009, 04:16 PM
awesome character you working on here, think its very original to :applause:, and love your drawing style.:arteest:
Dominance logo here >>> LOGO (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=282&t=728088) and here LOGO (http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/showthread.php?p=120277)
Keep it coming... Cheers!
DOMINANCE WAR (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=282&t=742068)
thank you Kennethhalvorsen
So, here my cocept sheet.....
04-15-2009, 04:16 PM
hey dude, really cool concepts you have, i feel like i should be disturbed by them but instead i get some kind of... calm vibe from them i dono, ive never gotten tha feeling from a character before, maybe because they're some kind of trees :D i love that, and your helmet concepts make me so jelous  you have something good going on here
keep it up man!
04-15-2009, 04:50 PM
Wow i really like the concept sheet, looks well thought out and planned to a T, your char reminds me of a creature outta a Guillermo del Toro film, keep it up dude looks wicked.
Octostatue: Thanks man. this is a very kind copliment.. and pretty much that what I wanted to achieve
Today I got my new Ituos4  let`s get it on...
finally:argh: my modeling sheet
I would love to model this one from such beautiful concept art :) Head is gorgeous!
Thank you very much DDS. By the way, great portfolio !!
04-16-2009, 05:57 PM
This is absolutely great MR, i love the concept and modeling sheet. Can't wait for colour!
04-16-2009, 08:06 PM
Really cool approach to the idea man! The concepts look so professional! The design sort of reminds me of Pans Labirinth which was one of my favorite movies. Overall I love the direction you're going with this one!~Gonna keep an I on this wonderful concept, keep updating!
GaeasHerald: thx- now the tough phase has begun.. color and composition:curious:
Shiramune: Very kind thank you. Pans labyrinth is also one of my favorite movies:bowdown:
I`m working now on the composition- and i noticed it`s hard to give my final illustration a dynamic fell because my creature is stucked to the ground, has no arms to move and no facial expressions.... :argh: work, work, work to do
..here we go
here`s a first composition-test. The Cyclamen fights some machine thing ( smudge on the right side)
As i told in earlier posts I want to give my character a certain dynamism although he`s tucked to the ground.
I would be verry thankful about any crits, comments, advices an so on.
hmmmm, awesome awesome !
Why dont you try some curved lines for the position of your Cyclamen, it would maybe help you to have the dynamism you are looking for...
Nice first comp mate !
04-17-2009, 06:01 PM
These are great, maybe you could try some twisting of the roots for the dynamism your looking for.
04-17-2009, 06:45 PM
GREAT STUFF:thumbsup:   keep it up:beer:
04-17-2009, 07:35 PM
i would model one of these on my deathbed....
awesome feel and decorations allover
thanks for the help guys
twisted the body a bit...
04-17-2009, 08:38 PM
Yep, cool modelling sheet, looks like something out of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch - cool design. Looking forward to seeing how the main image develops - composition looks basically sound but a little too central perhaps.
thanks Simon. I didn`t know the film- googled it, looks wicked.
I`m quite happy with this composition....
composition 4 (problably the final one) and colour test...
critics are welcome! merci
04-18-2009, 02:12 PM
really great concept man! I've read all your thread...you have passed a really long road man:P but now it looks great, this "wings" are just amazing, but I think head i s better in this b&w image...
Thanks PencilEater, yep but still a long way to go.
I started my first detailing. The composition is the final one I think. I add the colours in a later stage.
critiques are most welcome. thanks
04-20-2009, 01:15 AM
very impressive! you work flow has a lot of harmony and its great to see your developing proses run so smoothly. your comp is also looking good, but are you going to throw out some more ideas. you still have some time. Or maybe the same but with one creepy had sticking out to give some perspective. keep it up bro!
thanks live2contage.. The composition changes every hour:argh: and I`am working also on the foreground so the last update won`t be the final one. But i apreciated your comment and maby there are other suggestions out there... so tell me:bounce:
04-20-2009, 12:45 PM
thats great, yeah you have plenty of time, so give us your best, I love your stuff man, great inspiration, maybe he can be tormenting a victime under him by the laying of hands...or the trunk can be growing over someones foot, okay I'll shut up, just wanted to give my support amigo.
04-20-2009, 09:00 PM
I've read in the DW rules that your character MUST be painted in your team colors...
"Your character MUST possess your team's colors and/or your team's insignia/logo. If you don't have the colors or the insignia located somewhere on your character, your entry will not make it into the top 50. Please represent your team properly. This is a team event so make your team proud!"
I've found it...It could be very bad if your work won't be in top 50 only because of the wrong color or lack of the logo...
thanks very much PencilEater. but if you take a look at my modeling-sheet you can see the CGS-logo on the creatures shoulder.... and `ll add it later in my illustration.. but there`s still a long way to go... thanks anyway:beer:
...with robot. I know I say it everytime but now I`m happy with composition and content.... we will see:)
04-21-2009, 08:17 AM
Took some time to see your work. It looks very amazing very detailed and realistic looking. Can't wait to see in color my friend... Post up some more updates, take care for now.
04-21-2009, 10:28 AM
thanks very much PencilEater. but if you take a look at my modeling-sheet you can see the CGS-logo on the creatures shoulder.... and `ll add it later in my illustration.. but there`s still a long way to go... thanks anyway:beer:
:P heh, I'm not so observant as I thought:P
In your last image, I think that composition is running to the left, upper corner too much. The robot, and your Cyclamen have the same direction, maybe try to paint this robot directed to the right
ShogunWarrior: thanks- yes colours... I`m starting now!
PencilEater: feedback appreciated- though this diaginal is part of my light concept. Because my creature has no activ force (moving arm or weapon ect.) The light is coming trough the trees -backlighting the creatures head and finally falls onto the robot... In my b/w image the major light-lines and are missing and there`s also a lack of contrast- I`ll fix that when i`m starting with the colour.... and thats now!! It probably takes some time up to my next update.. so long
But! as always comments and critiques most welcome!!
04-22-2009, 02:40 PM
Beautiful Work Michael! The textures look really awesome. Congratulations.
My DWIV entry (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=282&t=746170)
here very quick colour test- some are very similar,, maby there`s a direction..:) we`ll see.
Comments would be very useful
04-22-2009, 03:55 PM
the third and fourth ones are my favorites. Awesome illustration!
.. now it`s better. here you can see three different versions...
04-22-2009, 06:08 PM
Great work! In matters of atmosphere I would definitively go with the third one but there is still some detail that actually you mentioned in a previous post. I think there is not enough contrast in the robot. I kind of miss a more clear foreground level.
Keep ti up!
My DWIV entry (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=282&t=746170)
04-22-2009, 06:19 PM
This is beautiful!! Probably my favourite 2D entry so far!
Love your colours too. Out of the three I like the first and second. The third is a little too green in my opinion.
Also I kind of prefer how in the previous colour tests (with the 6 images) you had some brighter areas and overall higher contrast. The last 3 to me seem to have the brightness turned down or something which makes it a little muddier. But dont get me wrong they still rock, so do as you wish :)
04-22-2009, 08:12 PM
I think that the third image is the best for your character, there's a great atmosphere of death and decay...add there some more contrast and it'll great:]
MrRico: thanks... yes you`re definitely right about the contrast.. i fix that as sonn as i start with the opaque painting and final detailing..
Soggyclog:  thanks. encouragement is always needed.... critique appreciated!
The first one was in my opinion to sunny. what do you think about the two in this post? You were right with the third- too green-- but i kind of like this green background so i worked on this.
PencilEater: Thanks!! There you go-->
04-23-2009, 03:43 AM
All these color tests are awesome MR. I like the muted brown one best, but they are all good choices.
04-23-2009, 08:36 AM
MR Your work are really AWESOME!!!
it`s a tough decision. For some reason I tend to the second one. I think there`s a better atmosphere... but :argh:
I would like to hear some more arguments.... I`m stuck at the moment. And now I`m going to badger my circlle of friends:twisted:
04-23-2009, 10:33 AM
Awesome job so far,I like the right one more, keep rockin'
04-23-2009, 12:18 PM
I'll go against popular opinion and say I like the first of the two best, with a couple of tweaks. First, I'd tone down the brightness on the ground, just slightly. Then push the contrast on the upper parts of the creature and splodge some higher contrast turquoise behind its head and torso.
Or, if you wanted to be more experimental you could highlight its mid-section and part of the left wing (our right) so it looks like a sunbeam's hitting him but leave his head and the rest of the body in shadow. Tricky but it could pay off.
That's a bit difficult to get across in words but I'm not at my PC so I can't show you what I mean right now. Still, whatever you go for it's looking good.
nellenmet: thanks- the majority has voted for the first....
Simon: I appreciate your kind support. I owe you something.. a barrel...
there`s still a lot work to do... but time is on my side.. so far...
the contrast is always much better in my original images:curious:
hey guys, I nearly felt asleep while looking at my picture.. so I changed the canvas size and added a bit more action.. hope you like it. here the first rough version
damn it... this contrast...:banghead:
04-24-2009, 06:47 PM
Dude I love the contrast! I definitely like the composition adjustments! Personally I think this is one of the strongest 2d Entries. keep it up man!
04-26-2009, 02:39 AM
Wow awsome design, I especially love the head :D Keep it up! :buttrock:
Really great work :D Like a lot the mood and atmosphere on your image, really cool !! The forest can be a great opportunity to play with some "light beams" from the tree "holes" (Like Simon suggested) Waiting for more updates! Cheers!!
Awesome! I like the concept and the story behind it. Head looks great with that special armor.
I wait for your updates.
04-26-2009, 01:26 PM
this piece is coming to life, theres a very dynamic feel about it, great work, and keep it up, and remember good is the worst enemy of best, you have time so go for it, have a good one bro
Stutts; Thanks for these kind words:)
Ferx: Thanks, the light beams are on their way...
ario: thanks, updates are following soon.. i started my detail work
live2contage:  and "Fear is the enemy of progression" is also a good one
04-27-2009, 01:35 AM
Very nice. I really like the colours you went with.. and well, the whole thing.
04-27-2009, 02:36 AM
Very cool concept indeed. your painting skills are impressive, looking forward to seeing it finished!
uff I an`t see this piece anymore... :banghead: here`s an update. worked on the details.. and background...
critique and comments are welcome
04-27-2009, 11:35 PM
Said it before and I'll say it again - stunning work.
I really like the direction you're taking this. Coming along smashingly!
The only thing I can think that it's missing is a bit of mysticism...
He is a Claricon after all, so a practitioner of magic? I think some subtle glow/highlights to indicate that he's casting or is encompassed by magic.
If that's not the way you want to take it, I understand, but personally I think the piece would benefit from a little bit of "magic"
04-28-2009, 01:45 AM
Hey man! Very nice progress! Your character really turned out awesome.. I'd like to see some more drama/exitement in your composition, you dont nessecerily need action, stuff happening if you dont like to. But right now it looks really calm, a bit sad maybe, dont know if its something you'd prefer. Maybe play with the composition to create some tension and excitement.. Use the light, shapes, every element and try to sense the image rather than analysing it, dont stop experimenting until you get that feeling your searching for! ;) Keep up the great work m8! I'll be watching.. :)
04-28-2009, 08:51 AM
Dude, awesome color man! Really like the golden brownish look, has those old classical scenic painting feel.
Faithbleed. thanks for the good advice. your 100% right this piece needs magic... I`m working on it... thanks a lot.
FrozZT. thanks you helped a lot. I`m working on the drama and the mystic feel.. The picture is in my oppinion also too bright..
04-28-2009, 04:53 PM
what this picture needs in my opinion isa dark tree(or something different) in the right side of the canvas...there was a tree, I don't why you erase it...this colors are trully look sad, not mistical. This greeny version was better for me;] Faithbleed said something about magic effects. I think a halo around your chracater's head could be nice(something like in one of my first images for DW,but not metal of coarse;])
04-28-2009, 05:26 PM
I'm really quite blown away by this concept, mate! Really original, solid work. The character has a wonderful rhythm and I feel like it's incredibly mysterious compared to the average creature design. Super super! Best of luck, man!
PencilEater. Thanks for the good ideas....
..added some mysticism:) check it out. The composition is working for me.... but there are still 12 days to go,,, still a long way (hmm.. maby not as long as in the beginning...) to go.
also a detail shot..
please criticize. the guys before made a good job:beer:
04-29-2009, 09:21 PM
Looking really stellar, mate. The only thing that catches my eye in a way that might not be intended is the leg on the left side. All of the swirls make it look a bit more like feathers than bark to me. The leg on the right clearly depicts bark with the straighter planks heading toward the knee.
04-29-2009, 10:15 PM
Yeah, this is coming along really well. The colours are suited to the mood and the composition is almost there.
A couple of things, though: first, I prefer the faded background in post #123, it makes the character pop more. I think that background, if you toned down the brightness a little, in combination with slightly larger antlers would look good. Then, a few more well-placed tendrils rising up on the right where that one already is (with some lower contrast ones in the background) would add depth and balance the composition perfectly.
Also, I'm not keen on the blue lines. I think that some good lighting and shading on those antlers to make them seem really solid will have a better effect than the lines, which to my eyes makes the antlers look flat and fussy.
staticpen. Critique appreciated, Thanks
Simon: Thanks for passing by. I`m glad you like it and i`ll take your advices to heart.
04-30-2009, 05:06 PM
I actually adore the lines on the antlers. I find them to bring this character a lot of personality and originality.
04-30-2009, 09:10 PM
Dude, you sure have an winning entry... I cannot criticize, just cheer you up for this force of nature. :)
05-01-2009, 03:10 AM
Wow, stellar update MR.
I like the magical effect, it's subtle which seems to be the way you work. I love how you refuse to compromise when it comes to your designs.
The antlers "lines" tie in nicely with the glow effect of his skull/body - though it may be a too consistent. My suggestion would be to make the lines glow/fade in and out as they go - it would give the impression of a live, pulsing, magical "blood" (the ebb and flow of something living).
As BaronImpossible (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=131731) mentioned, the lines seem a little out of place, I think it may be more to do with your colour choice as bright blue doesn't appear very often in nature. Perhaps a more greenish hue would make a less drastic impact?
The other thing I think would make this a little more lively would maybe be some sort of magic or life force being draining out of your dieing soldier - sublte of course. At the moment, you can' tell that Cyclamen is responsible for his death. Something needs to tie them together.
As always, keep up the great work and take my comments with a grain of salt if you don't agree. :D
staticpen: Don`t worry I`ll keep the lines, but maybe i make them a little darker. Simon is right, now they make the antlers look fussy.
Abrvpt: we`ll see:curious:. thanks
Faithbleed. Thanks man. I`m very happy about such comments like yours. Good idea with the lines...In an earlier stage i did a lot of colour test for thr lines and this colour workes best for me.
And abot the dying robot; I had the same idea:cool:
a little update!... The end is near.

I can't say I have much else to say now except that I really dig it, and well done. :)

Hey there MR, this is really taking shape, the blue magic blood thing gives a creepy and silent power feel which I thing is right on. I do think he still looks a little flat, but then again I dont know much about this kind of stuff. Keep it up, and thanks again for all your useful advice.

I agree, with you now that I've seen your update. The blue does work quite nicely and now that you've blended/shadowed the lines in - the whole things flows a bit better.
I love the dust/particles you added above his head. Also the sun rays/back lighting is a nice touch.
I really can't comment on anything else, this is really an awesome piece of work mate. Do you intening on added any woodland creatures (mice, birds, knats/fireflys/creepy crawlies)?
I'm looking forward to see what else you do to it. Cheers and good luck. :D
more bluish.... IMO its more mystical that way,,,

It's pretty no matter the color choices, but with all this blue, the accents across the horns and the robot etc don't show up as prominently. The earthy yellows in the previous color set really brought the blues into focus. There's still a while before projects are due, so why not wait a day and then look at it with fresh eyes and see what you think?
