View Full Version : Space Ship: Babylon 5 Whitestar *Crits* *WIP*
DarkB5 07-07-2003, 05:06 PM I have been working on this model for 3 days now the model is about 90% done the texture is about 95% done.
I am working on the fighter bay now it needs to be modeled more in some spots and i need to light the fighter bay and texture it then i need to model some nail fighters to go in it.
The model was made in 3Ds max 5 useing a mix of splines and poly modeling.
I do not really do high poly models i normally do realtime models so this is new to me hope you all like what i have done comments and thoughts are welcome

well... i like the modeling, but quite dislike the shader. you can keep the textures, but sometimes you have to put a kind of noise and dirt, expecially near the bursters.
work a bit more on the shader properties, cause at the moment it looks like no specific material (metal? plastic? whateverelse?) and i can see no specularity.
keep on working

Its quite a while ago, since I watched B5 the last time. But I cant remenber that these ships had those yellow glowing areas.
Somehow it disturbs me.
The moddeling is good but you should try to make more details and somehow it looks like its made of very thin plates.

materials are not really my thing the ship has a organic armor skin that is what i was going for maybe it to gloosey ? i need to make it more dirty? maybe?
oh and that ship hade the yellow glow in the show but the ship was normally moving to fast for you to notice it

sure, man... don't u assume skin is a bit reflective (fresnel reflection) and has a different diffusion behaviour?

Please post bigger renders with lighter shadows so we can see all the details better
I can't see much from those renders here, sorry :o(

Nice, now i really like what I see, really nice concept we got here!
Can you post some ref pictures? I can't remember that ship from B5, maybe this season didn't come to Italy yet or maybe I didn't watch enough episodes
But it's really interesting, wish i could compare with some ref pics taken from the episodes
It looks like, yeah organic, like a snake skin, to me, maybe make it more shiny and bumpy if you want an alien skin effect
Have to look at ref pics anyway...

try putting a starry background in the renders, and see what it looks like, it been a while since i saw a whitestar on telly so i can't remember exactly what they look like, but i always remember they looked a little camoflauged in space

mmm... still not focused...hope this tip will help you more
organic spaceships are traslucent, more and more glossy and you can recognize something like interior cables, bones and cartilage, glowing muscles and organs.
is not just the idea of skin to make it organic, do yow know what i mean?
so... keep the modeling but make it traslucent and start putting something inside, according with the idea of foetus, veins, spleen, stomach... use noise procedural displacement with fresnel reflection, bla bla bla... use medical references... and so on
ok?

ps: remove the yellow glowing

the ship only has organic armor layed on top of the metal hull the organic skin is not totaly alife. the ships is mostly metal
there for there no mussles or hearts or brains or any of that
the yellow glow is part of the whitestar design and will stay
with the information got anymore tips for me ?
more information
The hull of a Whitestar is made up of Vorlon bio-organic technology, thus making a Whitestar a living entity. A Whitestar's organic armored hull is almost impregnable and the vessel has the ability to heal and adapt to most attacks thus far.* With every conflict, the Whitestar develops new countermeasures, developing new ways of protecting its self from attack. No weapon has the exact same effect on a Whitestar twice.
