in my scene, a character is turning a hand winch, cranking up a chain, the chain is going through one pulley as, the chain does not line up with the gate, and the gate raises. my questions are, how do i animate the chain through the pulley realistically? do i use a motion path? or do i somehow bind the chain to a skeleton? and finally, how do i wrap the chain around the winch as the character cranks it? any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you thought about using cloth and the using the button constrain to stick your chainlinks to the cloth.

This way you can get nice swining motion etc and its pretty quick.

And seeing as you can have cloth colide with object that should help.
