This is my first post on this forum so hello to everyone.

This is also my first DW (actually, my first CG contest ever ) and I want to use this great opportunity to learn something new and to gain some invaluable experience. I've seen DW website maybe 6 months ago and for a long time admired beautiful 2D and 3D creations. Actually, because of all that, I became interested in 3D and eventually completed a few game models by myself. Just yesterday, purely by accident, I bumped into DW website again and thought - wow, talking about perfect timing

My 3D skills are still faaar behind anything worth showing (I'm not too bad with environments but my characters suck) so I will take part in 2D challenge :D I have been drawing for as long as I remember, so it's time for some personal test.

I'm not much of a computer gamer myself, but I enjoy creating my own games, RPG systems (paper ones) and concept art. Since I'm a sci-fi/cyberpunk fan, especially of anything connected with androids/cyborgs, I was thrilled when I've seen race "Machines" and even more when I noticed: "Cyborgs". Now, that's something for me :) "Post-apocalyptic futuristic fantasy where magic exists" time period may be a little tricky, I have to think of something... "Mad Max"-style cyborg? Something with a steam engine? Hmm...

I will give it a thought and soon I'll post some first information, background story and sketches.

----------------------------

Cyborg

Cyborgs are comprised of living body parts fused together with mechanical additions. Each unique cyborg is controlled by its own central processing unit (CPU). Although these machines possess living tissue, they remain incapable of using magic.

Assigned tasks: Protect homeworld, destroy all resistance, terminate the dimensional rifts caused by a yet unknown source, and reclaim your rightful dominance over the entire planetary system.

----------------------------

Well, let's get started.

Good luck to everyone :buttrock:

And so the story begins…

Underground tunnels of the CGS-1 were filled with humming noise, occasionally interrupted by loud, metallic bangs and rattles. Two figures in dirty, leather aprons and old-fashioned ultra-vision helmets were standing next to the long, steel table covered with diagrams, notes and sketches.

-Doc, how do we make this one fully operational? The last two specimens failed. Only our last unit, Æsir v.3, was a success but his defense proved to be useless against those damn magical attacks.

-Well, we just need to think how to improve a few things, namely:

Life Support System – how our specimen will feed his remaining human flesh and brain. Since now his stomach and most of the internal organs will be removed, we have to think of another effective life support system.

Energy unit – another thing that needs some sort of fuel is its main energy unit. This unit will keep all mechanical and electrical parts running. We can’t rely any more on solar power because of acid storms and pollution level. It must be small and well armored, just like the CPU.

Weapon – he is not going to be very friendly, that’s for sure. For the last few days, I’ve been inputting a few special orders directly into his brain that will protect us and all the CG Society members out there. However, all the others will have a really hard time.

Defense mechanism – he must defend himself and our allies, so his body must be strong and resistant to bullets, those nasty magical tricks and the environment.

-And what about d… demons? All those rumors… Did they really appear? Do they really exist? Will he be able to…?

-Enough! We’ll never know if don’t get to work. Go and bring our “volunteer”. He should be quiet and obedient by now. This drug is pretty strong. I’ll prepare the table. Oh, and don’t forget about those buckets.

- Ok, the first thing we need to plan is the head protection. It's the most vulnerable part of our specimen. Unfortunately, we can’t get rid of the brain so we need to secure it. Here are some first quick concepts I made. These sketches may lead to something more detailed but first the life support system and energy unit have to be designed. Hopefully, we’ll get some feedback from our community - that may help with the final design.

Images aren't showing up - when I right click 'show image', I can view them in a new browser window, but that might be why you haven't got any comments.

EDIT: Doesn't look like you're image host allows hotlinking. Might want to put them somewhere else.

Your designs are looking a little bit generic at the moment - they are reading as a man wearing a suit of armour. I like the retro-futurism style you're going for, but it's not reading as either post apocalyptic or a cyborg to me at the moment.

I'd mix in a bit more of an organic look (to make it look more like a combination between man and machine), and try to make it less 'clunky'. Doesn't look like it could really move very fast at the moment - fine for a war machine, not so good for a human-size cyborg. :D

Yes, apparently Picasa has some issues :) Sometimes images showed up, sometimes not. It should be ok now.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I guess I will make it more 'mobile' and show more flesh (in a completely asexual way :)). Still, he will have to have some weird armour-like protection. I'm not sure yet what it will look like though.

Back in the lab...

- As far as the life support system is concerned, flesh and remaining organs will receive everything they need thanks to the system of tubes and wires. We just have to think of a container. One idea is to include a jar, made of bulletproof glass, in place of a stomach and bowels, filled with special acid. The jar could be filled with anything of organic origins.

Wellcome to the team
Good luck in your creative process! :arteest:

P.S.
U shud post the IMG links rather than thumbs. ;)
And i suggest to post images in photobucket.com. At least i haven't had any problems up until now.

I haven't updated my thread for a long time :D I had many other things to do but I haven't forgot about DW. Fortunately, the deadline now is May 18, which gives me some time :)

Here are some sketches I made recently. They don't show exactly how my cyborg will look like but I have the "complete version" in my mind so I'll try to finish on time. As you can see, I added a "pet" - small tech support :)

Here's a study of the head. The green liquid present on the previous images (life-support system) goes into the armoured brain via two sets of tubes - in the ears and in the nose. Eyes has been disposed as too unreliable. Instead, a vision enhancement system has been implanted. CPU is at the back of the head.

Here's another small up-date as far as the protection of the unit is concerned. The back is hidden behind a thick, metal shield so that most of the controls and CPU would not be exposed to direct attacks. Right under the shield you can see two "inputs" for mutagens and other liquids necessary for the life-support system that are processed inside the "tank" in the abdominal area.

Began working on the background of the final illustration. I'm aiming for some dark, shattered location and my cyborg patrolling the area. Still have about 2 days to finish, it should be enough

I like to join more relistic looking backgrounds with cel-shading, anime-like characters so that's the approach I'm taking.
