View Full Version : CNN:In college? You might be addicted to video games..

"Roughly two-thirds of college students play video games, but the image of a nerdy guy who spends all day in a dimly lit room blowing up computer-generated bad guys is off base, according to a new study.

College gamers are not necessarily male -- or anti-social hermits. And while about a third of those surveyed admitted playing computer games during class, the games generally don't conflict with their studies, says the researcher who conducted the survey for the Pew Internet & American Life Project. I get the impression after reading that article that the survey was a bit weak and shallow. They appeared to be reluctant to make any judgements as they claimed,
" Playing games is so common for this age group, it's almost second nature, Jones says. "It's common maybe in a way Monopoly was years ago," he says."

I don't recall playing monopoly anywhere near daily, weekly or even monthly. Maybe once a year at best.

I suspect that CNN has more than just a passing interest in the news portrayals they provide related to gaming and such.

I don't think so, it's not like CNN are videogames maker, and this poll was not made by CNN, they just reported it just like a lot of other news sites.

CNN is a piece of a multimedia conglomerate with fingers in many pies.
CNN has been shown to be quite capable of providing loaded news coverage.

Except this was not a CNN poll, and was poste don many other news sites, and isn't the first poll with such results. What's the big deal?:surprised

It basically the poll that CNN wants you to know about therefore they reported it.

Where do you hear the news on surveys taken that don't reflect the same result and happy views as the survey CNN chose to report about?
Or do you only wish to view news stories, polls/surveys that reflect your own projected beliefs?

You don't appear to be very selective or discerning about the news outlets you put your trust in. CNN just recently admitted to some rather outrageous behaviour in relation to their coverage of Sadam Hussien.

Well what is CNN supposed to do? Make up fake surveys that show videogames as destructive and evil? I think YOU don't want to accept the possibility of this being a completely legitimate survey. You are claiming that the survey was done or posted for the purpose of helping some companies somehow tied to CNN to make more money, or something in that line, so I wonder if you can name any company that you feel is in any way somewhat tied to CNN?

So you think that if you don't see a contrary poll reported on CNN that it doesn't exist? That survey was an out and out puff piece on the happy state of college gamers. Hardly an exhaustive bit of research on the impact of gaming on the community at large.

I'm claiming that CNN tends to report items that further their interests and agendas. You're willingness to believe that CNN is an objective portrayer of news events is akin to believing that a prostitute will truthfully tell you prior to your transaction with her that she has aids.

So if CNN says it will rain tomorow, it is to further their interests right? Again, name me one company that is related or ties in somehow to CNN. If you can't, then you are merely assuming, and therefore making big mind strechtes.

CNN is not any more reliable than any other big news company in the US, but that is no reason to jump on a survey about gamers in college/university as if it was a scheme to make money.

Not happy with the questions asked in the survey? Fine, there has been plenty of different ones, on CNN and elsewhere.

So one can only conclude that you're one of Bahgdad Bob's believers...

Here's a link to illustrate the extent of related holdings by CNN's parent company. I'm sure that you already knew about all of these companies and their interests.

Looks like you're used to having mommy connect the dots for you.
I'll bet that even you have heard of movie tie ins with game companies.

Now take a lookie at the list and notice the name Warner Bros. Studios. Now exercise that idy bitty little bit of grey matter of yours and see what you can come up with.

And don't forget to factor in the advertising dollars at jeopardy from negative coverage while you've got that miniscule muscle working and up to speed.

Not to mention the daily dozen or so commercials advertising Roadrunner as THE ISP for gamers. ;)

Or their multitude of joint ventures with Sony.

Just two examples. That's not "nice" IMHO :surprised

But, I'll already stop. This is his "fight" to fight, not mine.
