Hello all, after lurkning here for a while I thought I should post my first digital painting (at least that I spent some serious effort on). I aimed for sort-of-photo-realistic while I still wanted to keep a painterly look. Uhm...
All done in Painter with the exception of blur-effects that was done in PS. C&C much appreciated!

I thought it was your reference photo...
Guess that says it all.
Looking closely for a couple of minutes I can kinda see that it has a painty-look, but it's damn close to photo-like :)
Congrats

This is a very nice piece. The only part that looks strange are the glass on her head. I'm not sure what it is about them. Maybe more shadows on the hair? Overall good work.

I think it's an amazing piece. Beautiful. How long did it take to paint?

Thank you for your kind words! My rough estimate is 60h plus on this one but that included time for learning Painter itself:
- It was painted very traditionally. I built it up as if I had been painting with real oil. I hope to learn how to speed up that process and cut a few steps that will save time.
- I reworked the hair and sweater at least three times each. Tip of the day: Do not ever make a portrait of someone with a knitted sweater! I did the parts in focus using a pastelle crayon with low opacity with some grain. Took forever.
Zmann, the glasses are tricky since they are made of plastic and somewhat transparent. I am working on another piece now but will see if I can make some changes to them.
Anyways, here is a pic at 1:1 resolution that better show what I mean with "painterly" (is there such a word?).

Absolutely stunnig work, i love the details! Thanks for the sweater tip ;)
And by the way, as far as i know, the word "painterly" is quite widely used in digital painting.

Now, you don't often see first attempts of this quality, and from your comments I would guess that you are an oil painter. Very nice overall, particularly skintones.
However, if you want me to be really picky, I'd suggest that the little lock of hair under her ear is under-worked, and stands out as still being 'stage 3' when juxtaposed to the skin which is about 'stage 70-something'. Also, the lock that goes under her chin just seems to fade out - looks like a bit of a dodgy transition.
Finally, I'd suggest that the plastic tones on her sunglasses are not quite convincing; a bit fuzzy and underdefined. I imagine this is a result of a fuzzy photo (at least, in this area) not providing enough reference information. I'd suggest just double-checking the speculars, colours and focus on the glasses. You probably wouldn't notice of they weren't behind the single-strand details of the hair though, so well done overall ;)

Thanks again for kind words and feedback!
The-Small-Print, I agree that the part near the earlobe is under-worked. This picture is up in the gallery too where I also post comments.

I did paint some oil and a lot of guache/acrylics/airbrush but that was a long time ago and at the time it was analog-style :) As you can see in my poor, empty portfolio I am still just trying to get the hang of digital painting and techniques. This portrait is the only thing that I have spent a lot of time on so far but a mild version of Asbergers syndrome combined with insomnia and loads of coffee helps too I guess ;)
EDIT: Adding a few WIP pictures for anyone interested.
