Hi.

A while a go, I did a job for a short film, and posted the finished clip (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67574) in the gallery section.

I later decided to make a comprehensive case study of how it was done, so if anyone is interested, have a look (http://home.sol.se/anders_e/AE3d/nocturne_casestudy/nocturne_casestudy_p1.htm).

Solomon - Thanks - err what?

I still don't get how you got the bug to go from flat to 3d! I can't understand ur morphing part, the two meshes must have the same verts, so why didn't u just make the 3d object, and then use melt and then readjust and then use the morph.

zarkos - wow, thanks, I don't know what to say... I hope you're right, but I doubt it.

Vfx - You're right, I could have used melt. Thing is though, I wanted the body to be flat when it was drawn, and then when it grew it would kind of fold around itself and expand, thus creating a hollow volume, like folding a piece of paper into a cone, or a soap bubble which is a 2d disc expanding into a 3d sphere. At close view the butterfly body has an overlapping seam.

In the clip though, all of this happens too fast and far away to be visible so it didn't really matter in the end.
