View Full Version : file import frustration..
Twyst 07-07-2003, 07:46 AM I'm currently trying to import a 3d mesh from Poser - in .obj format - so that I can model accessories and clothing. The problem I'm having is that wings appears to freeze when importing the head. I know why it does this, but I'm at a loss for a solution. Basically, the head has too many polys for wings to handle, and I can't find any way of reducing them. I'm not doing anything that requires super-precision, so even losing every other poly would be fine.
Suggestions?

A few things come to mind, it will depend on which figure you're working with though. If it's Vicky there is a lo-res Vicky available from Daz.
If precision isn't important then you could work on a different figure, maybe the P3 figures that come with Poser?
If it must be the figure you're having difficulty with you'll have to reduce the poly count in an app that handles large meshes better than Wings. There are plenty of cheap/free ones to choose from.
Oh and you could try exporting the head in pieces, you probably don't need the eyes, eyelashes or teeth? It won't bring the poly count down by much but it might help! (Actually I'm not sure if you can seperate these things in Poser?)
Oh and UVMapper classic will split vertices, you could effectively cut the head in half, export to poser again then export one half from poser to Wings, reduce polys and mirror!
I've not tried any of these methods but they shoud work. - Baz

Well, I'm working with the Koshini character.
It's really odd, though. I routinely create critters that reach comparable polycounts, and they load up just fine.
Perhaps what's needed is a C-program that converts .obj and .3ds files to Wings3D / WingedEdge format.
But I'll definately try cutting the head in half for import.
If you can open other models of a similar size without problems I wonder if there's some geometry that Wings doesn't like? Tricky problem, you can hardly send the model to Bjorn to check out!
All I can think of is to ask if any other Wings users have Koshini a see if they can open it in Wings. You might try asking on the Poser forum at Renderosity. Good luck - Baz

Well, I've just attempted to slice the head in half, using C4D (my other 3d love!)
Still no dice. I have to correct myself, though. It's not that it's freezing.. it's that it's taking next to forever to process. When it finally finishes, all the verts are there, and nothing's missing or broken.
Maybe the file import process is terribly unoptimized, and Erlang chokes on it?
(shrug) I dunno. I'll wander over to the official fora, and ask there.

This may sound harsh or rude but really it's not personal...
Why don't you model the thing yourself?

There is a program called PoseRay that can impoprt, fix, then export the obj. Works VERY well in correcting poser files:

Hope this helps!!!

.11c has some import bugs.
Try an earlier version such as .10c

If you have any bug reports, you probably should post them on the dev boards...
So far there's only one report about import problems,
and so far noones been able to reproduce that bug it seems.
I've tried importing and exporting fbx,3ds and obj,
and have had no problems with any of them.

I did report it.. and there is also a post farther down in that forum with another import problem thats similar, but with .3ds

The reason I'm not modelling this myself, is because this is an add-on to a current poser character. I'm importing the base mesh as a reference point. After all, it's a lot easier to make things like new hair, or clothes when you have a model to work from.
Anyways, PoseRay seems to do nothing for me. It's still taking just as long to import the mesh.
