View Full Version : external hard drive advice?

03-13-2009, 03:34 PM

I'm looking to buy a decent external hard drive, and am wondering if anyone here has any advice as to what is good at the moment. It will be used as an archive for old projects, textures, reference images etc., so I am thinking about a drive of around 1 TB. It needs to stable and reliable, doesn't have to be the fastest in the world, but I'm also not interested in bying cheep crap. Am looking for good price/performance relationship. Can anyone help? Are there some drives I should avoid?

Some of the Seagate drives are having a firmware problem, the 7200.11 1TB drive seems to be the most problematic. Whenever I need external storage I usually buy an external enclosure and then a disk, that way I can change the configuration later if needed or use the disk internally, etc. Buying a built external disk from a disk manufacturer usually means a permanent case that is not user configurable and are usually more expensive.

Those are two for starters, though there are thousands of enclosures out there. You get what you pay for on the external enclosures. Cheers!

Thank you olson!

I'll take your advice and buy case and drive separately.
