View Full Version : Help Me Turn a Face Into a Terminator

I have been playing around with Paint Shop Pro 8 and Adobe Photoshop 6.0 I am new to most of the stuff and have had fun just playing around with it.

What I am interested in doing is turning a face into a Terminator. Here is my first attempt:

http://swatzer.250free.com/T2_Morph/FirstAttempt.jpg

What I can't figure out is how to blend the two pictures without it looking so damn blatant. I want the edges of the Terminator skull to blend right in with the face, but I don't know how. So instead I tired to just make it look like it was ripped off, but it doesn't look that great. :hmm:

Can someone explain how I can blend the image to the face? I have both PSP and Abobe, so any info on how I can do it with either program would be greatly appreciated!

Here is my second poor attempt:

http://swatzer.250free.com/T2_Morph/TEST2.jpg

I just cut out the image and pasted it over the face. How the heck can I have it just blend into the skin?

Again, thanks in advance for the help guys!

I did use lasso, but now I want to blend the image of the metal skull into the skin. I don't want a noticeable line where the skin is and where the metal is...I want it to blend together...does that make sense?

Kinda like this picture:

That was done using this picture:

I just need to know how to blend the edges...

Cut out all those damaged areas into 1 new layer, drag it over to 'your' picture, scale it to make it fit, then use the paintbrush/clone/color tool to make it darker/blend it in.

Thanks Premutos! Here is my progress so far...

In this one I played around with the opacity...

And in this one I used the overlay feature:

http://swatzer.250free.com/T2_Morph/TEST_OVERLAY.jpg

Now I'm going to try to use the "clone" tool...

Thanks again for the info! I'm new to this, so help is a good thing!

*Let's call "http://swatzer.250free.com/T2_Morph/FORUM_PIC.jpg" for Arnie 1

and

*http://swatzer.250free.com/T2_Morph/Arnie_DAMAGED.jpg Arnie 2

It won't look good with that simple Half Terminator face - you need lots of Terminator-face details to make it look convincing, like the Arnie 1 face. Cut out all the details/all the robotic stuff in the 'Arnie 2' face, set feather to 2, copy to new layer, drag it over to YOUR picture (your face.) and play around with the Blend mode settings, Brush, Opacity and Levels

I added the Arnie 2 picture to your face, and it looked pretty good, except for one thing - A few cm's on the left side of Arnie 2 face are missing, so the face isn't complete- but you can easily clone that.

I'm sure someone else has some better advice, as I am pretty new to Photoshop as well - But it looked pretty good when I added the Arnie 2 robotic stuff to your face. (I didn't have time to properly adjust it to your face, but it looked pretty good!)

FEATHER! Thats the option I was looking for to "blend" the two images! Thank you! Thats totally what I was looking for..just never got around to finding it unitl you told me what to look for. There are so many options! So much fun!

Can you post your result? I'd like to see how yours turned out. I can give you my e-mail address if you don't have an image host.

Also, are you using PSP or Adobe? I find that Paint Shop Pro is the easiest to navigate through. I bought them both from a friend that was moving to the US and sold all their computer stuff for cheap, but so far without having manuals on either program, PSP is super easy to use.

well i just did a quick'n'dirty approach....

ok lemme see...mask(!) out those terminator parts you want ...then around your edges mask it with 50 % grey, that'll make it smoother......then select some space around the outer edges of the 50%-grey area on the mask (!) and gaussian blur them.....same should fit for the edge between pure black and 50% grey on the mask....

happy testing

I'm using Photoshop 7. :P 'Feather' can be found under 'Select'. I didn't save it, but it's easy to recreate.

Open Arnie 2 picture,

Select all the robot-stuff sticking out of Arnie 2 with the Lasso tool or polygonal tool. Remember to check 'add to selection' (on the lasso/polygonal bar.) or simply press and hold shift. With small stuff like this, check the feather to 2-3ish pixels. It kind of 'blends' the cutout, so you don't get sharp and ugly edges. Now 'copy to layer & deselect (ctrl-d)

Now, hit V or press the 'Move' tool, open your picture, click on the Arnie 2 picture (make sure the 'copied layer' is active.), drag it over to your picture (Easiest way to do this is to have both pictures lined up next to each other in Photoshop.) and it will automatically become a new layer.

Now hit ctrl-t to scale it. Right click will bring up more scaling options, or you can go to edit - transform.

You guys have been super! Thanks so much for the help!

Here is what I have so far...

I took a little bit here and there...even a bit of Arnie's eye!

This is so much fun! There are so many ways you can tweak the image, and then go back and tweak it some more!

Again, thank you so much for all your help!

Man, that's tons better than what I did.
I just used a bunch of custom brushes. Prolly should have mixed in some photos.

Your's is definitely looking good.

Great, that's pretty similar to what I got (I cloned the red terminator eye into your though. Made you look more robotic.) - Are you doing it in Photoshop?

I'm using Paint Shop Pro. The layout is easier than Adobe and things are easier to find.

Stroker - I like how you made the skin blend. It looks all burnt. Plus, all the scrapes and bruising look great too!

swazner, dont use that new iamge of the terminator. the one you had on yoru face before was perfect. just do some like painting on the edges, were the skin and the metal meet. just paint what you see on arnold. using that new image looks desaturated, your original image is very clean and sharp looking. just paint on the edges, make some brushes to speed it up.

some quick commentary, the tearing of flesh has to be somewhere between blurred and clean cut. In one instance, it was too clean cut, in the last image, it was too blurred. There has to be some balance to make it look more natural. And when applying drop shadows or flesh burns, it should be applied on the original face and blend into the lower layer, which is where u get more depth.... i've seen a lot of this blending done wrong where the terminator layer is above the face, which causes depth issues. But yeah, sorry for being vague... but that's the general direction u should be heading.

If you have trouble getting the look you want with filters or blending modes and such you can always grab the paintbrush or airbrush tool and give a try at drawing in what you need :) heres a quicky of what i mean

Thats totally cool...you did a great job of reflecting the white glare from the window on the right side of the face! How'd ya do that?!

First I made the terminator face darker to try to match the lighting then I Just selected areas with the lasso tool and brushed in a lighter color where I wanted reflections.
