View Full Version : I'm going to go insane. Insane! Hah! (Weightmaps, Rigging, Futility. )

Mwuhahahaha! I've done this over and over... So many times that instead of pulling my hair out I can't help but laugh histarically at my own futility!

And so I come to you for help.

I have my character... I got all his bones set up so Kaydara MotionBuilder will accept it and set it up real quick, and MotionBuilder did what it was supposed to do. I go move the IK effector on my right arm up and down and all is well... but when I move my IK effector on my left arm... all bone/mesh relations seem to end at my LeftArm bone.
(Left_Parent_Bone->LeftShoulder->LeftArm->LeftArmRoll->LeftForeArm->LeftForeArmRoll->LeftHand)

So I figured... maybe my mesh or skeleton isn't symmetrical. So I cut half of my mesh and mirrored one half to the other side on the X axis. All is good. I cut my legs and arms off one side of the X axis and mirror it onto another. That should therefore be symmetrical. I take my mirror weights plugin and mirror the weights from one side to another, so all the weightmaps are good. It still does the same thing. So I did it again. Same thing. Again. Same. Again Same. Mwuhahahaha! And repeat that cycle about 10 times. Now I figure it must be the weightmaps. So I delete half my mesh and ALL the weightmaps and redo everything.

And after the dust settled... the same thing.

Here's the LWO file, the LWS file, and the FBX file (for Kaydara MotionBuilder.)

I beg of your help... I've done all I know how to do at this point.

by the way, I AM aware that that skeleton is missing an elbow bone on the left side (or right... depending on how you look at life.)

I am aware of this and it has no effect on my problem.

Had a look at the files and the left limbs are still referencing the right side weight maps. If you change the map assignments over in the LW spreadsheet everything seems to work OK.

go to 3D buzz download the tutorials files there
you'll know what's going on then .
that's what i did it's a simple app, but like most things you need the basic method to get things done.

afew things i will add that may help.............. maybe =)
first name all your bones as per motionbuilder

test the basic bone setup in LW before you export make sure everything is parented correctly ( very important !! )

if done right you'll be able to just characterize and your character and the rig will work straight away
( Takes me about 2 mins to get a rig to work from LW )

if you have to edit bones to MB rig names you've done some wrong and it could be afew things or alot of things.
maybe best go back to LW and edit and export again

but i do edit in MB sometimes but i haven't had any trouble yet ................

Just check the weight maps in Layout ...
U have Right side maps assigned to the left side - that's all.
The same thing is on the scelegon tree ...
Just check this window because each time u make convert scelegons to bones Layout read data that handled with this window ...
Good luck.

I mast add - u use too many plugins for such as simple thing .

oh dear. something so easy and I didn't even see it! That coulda saved me at least 5 hours of headaches.

By the way, in modeller my weightmaps are the same names as my bones... i have LeftArm for example... LeftArm is the name of my weightmap and my bone. Why doesn't layout automatically assign them to the right places?

I have another question.

I want to use Motionbuilder to pose my object... I don't want to animate him yet... how can I do this?

I tried exporting to .fbx and importing .fbx in Lightwave but nothing shows up.

You need to open up your original scene in Layout (the one which you exported to generate the FBX file), then do "Merge with FBX".

If you're just posing the character, though, and not animating him, why go through all that trouble? Why not just do it directly within Layout? :surprised

cause i don't remember how to rig in Layout. :S Although I suppose I could just rotate and move the bones.

DOH!

i'm starting to feel naucious.

I didn't even think of posing him in layout. I do NOT know why that thought never entered my mind.

welll... i guess eventually i'll animate him.
