I have no idea what I'm getting myself into, but I figured it would be worth the try. It might be a good experience for a first try at a modeling challenge.
I am going to try and come up with original designs for the character Miriya Sterling (Milia Fallyna Jenius) and her Veritech Fighter (VF-1J Valkyrie) vehicle of the Robotech (Macross) series.
Here are the reference material I will be getting the literal and visual reference from:
http://www.robotech.com/infopedia/characters/viewcharacter.php?id=25
--Robotech Encyclopdia info on Miriya
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VF-1_Valkyrie
--Wiki on the vehicle, the VF-1 Valkyrie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miriya_Parina_Sterling
--Wiki bio of Miriya
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-14_Tomcat
--Wiki info on the F-14 Tomcat--the tech base to derive the VF-1 design from.

--Design of Miriya and her Valkyrie from a later Robotech series.
http://www.macross.co.jp/
--The Japanese site of the Robotech/Macross univese.
http://stevethefish.net/superfamicom/macross/macross.htm
--The Macross game which included Miriya and her Valkyrie as a playable character.

--Toy design of the VF-1J (Miriya's Valkyrie)

--Some animated gifs, including a simple Valkyrie transformation--bad framerates though.

--Cool site with the Valkyrie and its variable modes and color schemes.

--Looks pretty cool, will I buy it? I dunno...

--Robotech Masterpiece replica model.

--A forum topic with a large amount of images of the Macross Valkyrie action figure.
Sorry about the links--once I derive some original designs for the character and vehicle, I'll post some images. Basically, the links are just sources I am looking at for inspiration, technical info, and character background.
I have a very busy final semester in college, so I am having doubts of finishing this in time, but I will try to be a dedicated as possible--even to the point where I'll finish this if it is past due for submission. I just want to see what I can do in such a limited time span.
All thoughts, comments, or critiques welcome.
Also, I was thinking of keeping this low poly because my computer seems to hate anything of ridiculously high detail (I am not much of a render person). So most of the detail will have to be brought out in the maps rather than the models themselves. Is this alright? I know there's no set poly limit, but I just want make sure if intricate model detail is a must. Thank you in advance if there is a reply to this question.
