View Full Version : HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: He-Man & BattleCat Diorama

Omnilight

Hi, my entry would be a diorama from He-Man & the Masters of the Universe.
The basic idea would be He-Man in a heroic pose riding on a rearing BattleCat.

I would be referencing from paintings by Earl Norem, and actual MOTU toys.
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/omnilight/cgtalk_ref.jpg

Hopefully the model would turn out as inspiring as the paintings.

some work-in-progress of He-Man, more revisions needed
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/omnilight/he-man_110309.jpg

and BattleCat, just roughing out the forms for now, 1st time making a muscular cat, should be fun. I'm using the toy as reference, unable to find photos for such a muscular cat.

what program are you using for modeling?

Very nice work so far!

Your anatomy looks rather weird in some places though, ie in the quadriceps area (the rectus femoris seems way to big and the vastus medials appears to be attaching to the wrong place on its upper insertion) as well as the serratus and brachioradialis. Judging from this angle, the tibia does not seem to have its characteristic curvature. Just my two cents. ;)

Cheers!

hey omnilight!

man it's good to see you've entered....it was your dragon ball z work that was the base inspiration for me entering this challenge...

i can see a lot of similarities in your he-man anatomy and your goku anatomy and thats only a good thing...cos its nice and stylised and awesome...

look forward to following this one....

any new dbz stuff in the works as well? i check your site every now and then but there hasn't been an update recently

robo3687: hey, your models are looking great so far, looking forward to your final entry. i didnt have much time for personal projects until recently, so no updated dbz models yet, thanks for dropping by!

Looks like a very cool pose! To my eyes, the guy looks like he is just about to loose balance and fall off though. Bending him a tad forward at the waist might fix that. For some reason it also looks to me as if the beasty is trying to throw him off, rather then rising/charging with him. Maybe fixing the angle of the head can correct that.

Cheers!

BattleCat Helmet:

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/omnilight/bc_helmet.jpg
The rest of the armour, BattleCat looks too bulky from this perspective
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/omnilight/bc_armour_030409.jpg
needs more polishing, but i'll proceed to make He-Man's armour and weapons next.

TheRazorsEdge
04-03-2009, 11:15 AM
Battlecat's pose looks way better now. Sweet! I'd still tweak He-Man though to make them appear to move more in unison. Right now they still seem a bit disjointed. Great work on the armor so far. I guess its a bit early to say, but I do have some trouble following you on the feline anatomy.

Cheers!

Btw, I really liked your work on Dragonball/Goku since I first saw it on ZBC a while back.

Everything is looking really good here, very true to the original design. Nice dynamic posing too. What are your plans for the hair and fur? Also, what software are you rendering with?

axiomatic
04-05-2009, 08:43 AM
looks very promising. i think the weight of he-man as he sits on this rearing cat will be worth keeping in mind during final tweak of the pose. in your rough draw-overs so far i think he looks a little disconnected from the cat and a little slipping of the back far side of the saddle.

looking forward to seeing how this turns out :)

Omnilight
04-05-2009, 02:21 PM
hair for he-man is tedious work, phew!

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/omnilight/HM_hair01.jpg

scottimation : Thanks, i'm drawing all the hair and fur in Zbrush, rendering with vray+max.

axiomatic : thankyou too, his left hand would be grabing onto a handle and his seat's backing should be high enough for him to counter-balance... in theory, hopefully i can pull it off convincingly.

This is incredible! really giving me something to live up to.

are you really just using max and zbrush? I'd really like to see more on how you went about building that mesh in the first picture. It just doesn't really look like something out of max.

Awesome work though! Looks just like 'em!

You really know your anatomy! Great job so far, very dynamic pose. I have to know what your poly count is looking like though, detail like that comes at a price!
Again, very impressive.

TheRazorsEdge
04-06-2009, 07:26 AM
The fur and hair look great! Overall everything looks like a really high-quality version of the original 80's toy. Very nice! You might want to consider getting this printed when its done. It surely would make a nice statue.

Cheers!

Slashmore: thx for ur support, i appreciate it
Gatewave: i used max to create rough forms, then onto zbrush for sculpting
jasonfeiner: thank you, my current zbrush file is 12 million polys, each subtool i try not to exceed 2 million. most of the subtools are hidden while i work, so its still very smooth.
TheRazorsEdge: nice idea :-)

DESCRIPTION: Hello :-) , I wanted to create a model of He-man and Battlecat in a dramatic pose, and I hope I've faithfully captured their essence here. I used Zbrush, 3dsMax and Vray. Spent about 90 hours total. Look for more close-ups shots in my work-in-progress thread.

I just can't understand how did you get that model from zbrush to 3dstudio without any collateral effects... do you know any guide on how to do this? because the times i've done this, I never get an exact model from zbrush to 3d studio. The only option is to export de model with the higher subdivs, but that is too painful for my PC!

thx

hello to all left comments, thank you!
now that i have gotten enough sleep,
i think i am able to reply properly.

WyattHarris: the link u posted was really excellent, can't thank you enough for highlighting it to me.

sapienz: looking forward to your upcoming entries, great to see a fellow singaporean here. btw, i am freelancing now.

japetus: thanks, u did a wonderful piece as well, u 've made a toy that i always wanted to have.

Senseicapi: thank you, i'm very lucky to be able to compete and complete.

eldee: thanks! glad u liked it

PasKal: hi :-), i did not use SSS shader because of time constrain, but i am making another render with SSS now that the deadline is extended, it takes ages to render SSS.

Oberyn: thank you, there are still plenty of room for improvements regarding my materials.

samartin: thank you! i like your entry, your renders are very charming.

Slashmore: haha, its not really perfect but i feel i've learned alot of stuff from this model. thank you for your continuous support. Regarding your question, i tried to squeeze as much polygon into 3dsmax as possible. I managed to get 1.4 million polys in with the 64bit 3dsmax, final file size is 270mb. i did not use any displacements, just bump maps. haha, plainly i just used brute force, my workstation suffered but it was still able to render.

REZI-st: thank you very much

waterlilly: Thank You too!

will be tweaking materials/shaders, hope i'm not breaking any rules if i post an updated render before friday.

Cheers!

* just replaced beauty render with a version that has some slight SSS
original (http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/omnilight/dz_final_15april2009.jpg) vs SSS (http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/omnilight/dz_final_SSS3.jpg)
