Hey there,

Fresh from winning the Individual Image Master Award in CGSociety's 'Steampunk: Myths and Legends' CGChallenge, Fabricio Moraes put fingers to keyboard to tell us how he created 'Steamnocchio'. This was the most requested tutorial for the year. So, here it is. Click on the image to read the story and feel free to comment.

That's a fantastic tutorial. I don't know if I've ever seen a cleaner and more concise breakdown of an image.

My only issue with the image overall is the odd choice to use a modern, high-temperature engine hose connected to Pinnochio. Everything else could be right out of an early 20th century workshop, and then there's a modern, high-temp hose right there in the middle, which I believe may not have come into use until the 50s or 60s. Just seems a tad out of step with the implied time period of the scene.

But that's a small quibble for such a brilliant image. It certainly deserved to win and is one of the strongest CG illo pieces I've ever seen.

Amazing image. I was surprised by the simplicity of the lighting. And, yet again, I feel I need to get ZBrush.

My favourite, since the beginning of the challenge...

Congratz, dude...

Would you explain a little more about the technique of making steam ?

I love this image, but I am a little uneasy about the "walkthrough". It sounds dangerously close to "make an AO pass and multiply it with the image" thing that is sadly rather prevalent in the business.

I won't go into too much detail, coz I elaborated about this quite a lot on my blog why this is wrong (http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/2008/11/joy-of-little-ambience.html), but I actually think the "raw render" looks better than the final, partially for this reason, giving it the "dirty" look of "too much AO".

But beside that detail (which is, in fact, a detail) it's a very neat image.

What I especially like is how it was clearly planned from day 1 to be seen from a single angle, to the point where stuff outside the view isn't even modelled. Which I find "visionary" in the sense of "I really know what I want to do".

Nice image!
