Hi there!
This scene was made by our studio, and was done in the spare time of the team. The goal was to make a tribute to Matt Groening, such an amazing artist who gave us this amazing cartoon! We salute you!

Comments and critics are most welcome!

Great job, it´s really hard to model in 3D a 2D character, I made two years ago a model of Obelix and it takes lots of time.

Congrats, 4 stars

Haha, you captured everything really nice! The glass and beer shaders are great too.

Although, I believe that the Duff beer bottle is brown in the episodes and not green. :P

But all in all, very nice picture!

Hi again!
Hahaha! Everybody, so much thank you for the comments! And yeah, we all hope for a 3D Simpsons episode! Hahaha!

---

X-PanDer: You can see the brown bottle behind Homer! The "green bottle" idea was to be something like a "Premium" version of the conventional Duff, so that explain why this one it's green! Thanks for the c+c! ;D

ronaldomiranda: Cara, foi usado o FG pra dar um rebatimento legal e tal, os tons mais escuros foram carregados na pós! Abraço!

Soon I'll be posting an Ambient Occlusion! ;D

Really nice job there!

While they haven't done a whole episode in 3D afaik, Homer appeared in 3D in a Halloween special way back in the early days of the series (when 3D was much more difficult to produce and far more expensive).

I forget the season, maybe season 4, but Homer went through the Poltergeist-like hole in his living room wall and came out in 3D on the other side. It was only about half an episode, and the environment was simple/almost non-existent, but he was in 3D. It also had a classic line when he arrives in the 3D world and says, "Man this place looks expensive!"

If you do a little research on that episode, you'll find that all the stuff Homer runs into on the 3D side are in-jokes or references from the early days of graphics computing.

man this is awesome. I don't visit Cgtalk very often but you really made my visit worth it today.

Have the characters been modeled in the pose or in a default pose then rigged and posed using a rig? I would so like to animate those guys!

Any chance we could get a wireframe view of the scene?

PDI did the Homer 3d Christmas special in 1995 by the way, few years before Antz.

Well done again.

I totally agree! I've tried SO many times to do a Simpsons scene but I just get so frustrated about never getting it right! :(

I'd love to see this turn into a mini tutorial/bigger article or something (if you've ever got time of course). Especially with the shaders and lighting! ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!

I've been staring at it for about the past 10mins now and just can't find a flaw! Incredible!

@blackberryf1
Thanks! Hahaha! Yes, it would be great a new 3d episode!

@SpAik & Crafty 1980
It's really hard to do Homer's proportions and don't make him look odd! To tell the truth, we "lied" on his eyes position. If you follow Homer's front proportion, you never gonna achieve those "snaped" eyes look! ;D
About the time, wow, it's took a LONG time, because we have about one hour per day to do it...!

Cheers! :buttrock:

I have one crit though, isnt homer missing from the reflections in the mirror behind moe?

ewerybody
04-04-2009, 09:34 AM
nicely done!! :]

for the critics: the skin looks a little to shiny to me like they are sweating slightly. Homers left eye does not seem to aim at you, his nose seems attached and Moes hair is not anything like hair... If you step back the scene has a claylike static impression to me.

But I'm impressed how perfect the shapes are catched. You could just draw an outline on them and would fit I guess. The sussounding is superb and beer looks yummy as well.

Wow! So many comments to reply...! haha! Well, let's go:

Cizephy, Daniel8488:
Hahaha! No, Homer isn't missing on the mirror, in the beginning we thought the same, but it's phisically correct, odd I confess, but correct! By the way, a great observation! haha! Tks for comment!

ewerybody:
If you take a look on homer's eyes (on tv series) you will note that his eyes don't aim exactly for the same direction, this help a lot for composing his dumb appearance. About Moe's hair, if you make a test with a "real" hair, dude, it's veeeery scary! haha! :surprised

http://idealtv.uol.com.br/blog/annedias/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/homer.jpg - see? he's cockeyed! haha!)

manishthorat:
Of course, but there's nothing much to share, to tell the truth! heh! On post production we just added some "fog ambience", color corrections and the DOF, everything else was made on render!
If I can help you in something else, don't think twice! Tks for comment! ;D

TurboTronix:
Sorry dude, but right now we don't have a bigger one to send! We're working on it! :wip:

Hey Victor,

That was a quick reply, i wanted to know what shaders u used and which passes did u render ?? I am a little newbie at this stuff, i saw the ambient occlusion pass that u rendered, i want to know what other passes did u render and what blending mode did u use ??

Am sorry i am asking all the secrets to creating that awesome image of urs, but i surely need to know

Thanks again

manishthorat:
You're in a lucky day, dude! My last post here was 2 weeks ago! hahaha!
That AO pass was not used on render! It was only made to post here, to show the models and lights. All the other passes were common passes like ID (for a detailed selection. it's very useful for color corrections), reflection, refraction, specular and some masks! 80% of the shaders in scene were ArchDesign, the rest it's a mix of Mental Ray FastSSS (oh God, thank You for giving us this shader! hahaha!) and Standards (they're quickly to render, useful to speed up your render!)

Dude, there's no secrets here, but something VERY VERY useful was something called teamwork! Ask other people opinions it's so important! Not only the "3d inner circle" (foruns and all this stuff), ask your mother, sister, neighbor, everyone! The rest you found in tutorials over the internet! :D

Everybody has something to teach, everybody has something to learn. - Never forget! ;)

i'm a big fan of the simpsons and would really like to see an episode in full 3D....

They did a 3D episode in 1995 or 1996. Best quote was Homer standing at the intersection of XYZ and saying something like, "I don't know where I am, but it feels real expensive".

This is really nice image.. Do you by any chance have higher resolution version of this to share? It would make a great desktop background (cropped to 1920x1200).. :)

First of all, thanks for all the comments! haha! It's so great to read all those c+c! ;D

Sorry dude, but right now I don't have one! I've made some high resolution renders (something about 5000px) but unfortunately we are all too busy here on the studio... maybe soon I post it for you all!

Thanks again! ;D

Excellent work!

Modeling, blocking, environment, textures, lighting... superb work. Difficult to keep the charm and character of a 2D cartoon when it makes a transition to the unforgiving precision that the 3D medium sometimes demands. You've done an outstanding job here!

Cheers! — Möe

First of all, great work. I'm really impressed!

But I have a question.

Right now I'm trying to model Homer's head 2. But I get som problems. SO I wanted to ask, wether you could give me some tips.

- What technique did you use?(boxmod.?)
- did you create the head first and then added the mouth?

2 me it would just be a fortune if u described the most important steps in this work and could give me some tips. I'm a noob, started modelling not so long ago and thought homers head doesn't look that complicated. I was wrong :(

greets

once again great work
