I am trying to create a shot where a plant stem is growing upwards, and I want to show its progression, as it enlarges in size twists around an object e.g. tree, and bends and struggles (kinda snaps and pulls) as it grows. I also want to show thorns grow from it. I have no idea just how to tackle this, and so I thought I'd post here first to get some ideas. Any cheapish plugins, tutorials or web examples or simply ur own method to do such a thing would be very grateful. Thanks.

P.S. I don't really want the stem to follow a path, because it looks to organised and pre-calculated if u know what I mean - Not random enough, plus the motion is too fluid.

Well, blur has a freeware plugin to do growing vines that sprout thorns.

I'd personally say this is probably a job for scripting. I can't really understand the reasoning behind not using splines. There's really no other way to do that. Unless you want to hand animate all that stuff with ffds, morphs, etc.

Do you have any visual refence that we may look at, so that we can better help you with a solution?

Thanks.

Hi!
I think that its a candidate for using freeware plugin named "Grow" from polish artist which was taking part in the creation of the famous short Cathedral.

Sorry but forgott the place where to download. So try Platige Images (now featured studio on CGTalk) for some web links.

What it actually do is scaling up premodelled plant in natural way so it looks plant is growing (see Cathedralīs end where main character becomes a part of the cathedral).

Hope it helped a bit and showed way to go...

Hey, vfx, I looked it up. It's called: PathCylinder v1.09

It's probably part of the blur pack.

You can get it here:

Sounds very similar to a scene in the cathedral. You have to watch the full version to know what im talking about :)

anyways, just to help u out a bit

Press F1
type in Path Deform and then click on world-space modifier

the 2nd example should help you out a bit.

BTW

Anyone know when the Cathedral full version will be officially out?

I think that Cathedral is already finished:D cos it was nominated for Oscar long time ago... It last few mins its not full feature movie just short.

Its possible to download super cool hi res version on the net for long time (not as hires as for cinemas of course).

Cheers.

You can find some interesting plant-growth vids here... I browse this site all the time.

Do a search for "plant grow," there's a bunch of cool vids.

Couldn't L-Systems do the trick ? I recall that there was a l-systems plugin for Max, see here (http://www.3dcorum.com/ls1/intro.htm) for details about it, don't know if it will suit your needs, though.

Any luck finding that plugin/script from platigue? I did a quick check of their site, and some google searchs but yielded no mention of it. After seeing thier logo ident, I'd love to check out this thing.

Keep us posted.

"Grow" rings a bell, though i've never used it myself, but only thing i could come up with is this (http://www.id8media.com/3d_products/Grow.htm), and it's no freeware, so maybe that's not it ?
(well this one has some interesting examples in the gallery)

I also recall a tutorial that could be usefull here, of course i can't seem to find it right now - i'll look for it; it was about progressive morphing and showed how to animate stuff like blades of grass sticking out a plane - thinking it could be of some use if you'd want to do it by hand ?

Hey thanks all for the support. I've currently got the blur plugin and the example is great, however, I don't really want thorns that look like their sample, but it doesn't seem possible to pick an alternative object as the thorn type (ie a button that lets u select a piece of geometry as the thorn). Anyone got any ideas how this could be done with this plugin.
