Hi I started making some hair but it is very slow to render...am i doing something wrong or is there a way to speed it up?

Hardware? What kind of hair and how long are the strands?

BSP settings in the hair panel can work wonders.

especially on very populated volumes it's not uncommon to shave (no pun intended) some 50-80% of the rendertime off.

could you post a pic of the hair PPG and of the rendered result ?
if you do I could hazard some BSP values you can start from and give you a procedure to further refine the shaving (again no pun intended).

For a cheap, fast rendering hair, open the rendertree. Delete the hair renderer node. Plug in a phong, or even a toon if you want. Go into the hair panel, and change the type from volumic to geometric. This renders really fast. And the look of the hair is nice for certain visual styles.

For the realistic looking hair, stick with the hair render node. Try and play with BSP. You could kill transparency for a good speed boost. But if you do that, might as well use the phong/geo trick.

Its actually the transparency computation of the hair renderer node that kills it. It computes a transparency relative to the length of the hair (less at root, more at tip). And every hair has a value, so theres heavy raycasting happening.

So if you need the realistic hair, i suggest you use the phong/geo trick to speed up work and test renders, and pop back in the hair renderer node at final output render.
