Hey all,

Does anyone have any ideas on how to rig the wing so that the wing membrane folds in correctly? I've been through the tutorial links that sigma posted and I can't find anything appropriate. I found one tut for a birds wing that was pretty cool, but only works with feathers, and another one for modelling a whole dragon... but that one doesn't cover the wings very well...

I was thinking about either a weight setup, like below...
or blend targets...

Any ideas? Is there some other approach I should consider?

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Have you seen this tutorial? Dragon wing tutorial (http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutorials/max/dragonwing/dragonwing.asp). It's done in 3ds max, but perhaps you could translate some of the actions into Maya.

Thanks Radnor,

Yes I had come across this one a while ago...

I'm still seeing the same problem, it's an open wing...
Maya doesn't have patches like Max (with beziers), so controlling the deformation is a little more difficult. My wing is modelled as one piece...

But maybe scaling a cluster may work...

I'd really like to see if someone out there has done it and could show me an .avi of it opening and closing....

Still more testing to do...

Hey there,

I'm about to do something similar with a dragon I'm working on. I think my first attempt will consist of adding an additional joint that will simulate the folding of the wings.

I'll try using either set driven keys or a constraint system to put that bone into position. I'll let you know how my experimentation goes.

Wow, that's pretty solid... gotta be the cloth plug in... The membrane areas are a little too soft, but I could definitely work with that...

If anybody knows where it's from, please speak up....

Ok guys,

The link below will give you a 220kb maya file that contains bones... I haven't tweaked the setup so I had to actually adjust some of the bones at frame 20, it's just to show how you can contract the wing fully and still make it work...

Still working on the wing membrane geometry, looks like it's gonna be a modified nurbsplane...

If I find anything that'll work better, or if I make any progress with this I'll post it...

Good luck...

Maya binary file parse error: : (6) corrupted file structure

Is anyone else having this error upon trying to open AJE's file?

...resave the file as a ".ma"

My bad. I installed Maya 3.0 to accomodate some older plugins that are not compiled for 4.0. Maya 3.0 was then set as my default program of choice for .ma or .mb files...and your file being a 4.0 resident format I had problems...

...oops :surprised ...
