CGTalk - FX : Laser Sweep

Hi all!
I´m new to this forum, so please forgive any mistakes (or poor english)!

I´m trying to make a "laser-sweep" like in Aliens 2(when Ripley´s life-pod is beeing scaned by a "bio-laser" or something...).
Have tryed the obvioues (green light, rectangle - narow, volume light and fof, and so on), but i dont get the fx i want! Any ideas?

When asking a question about an effect such as this, it is not only helpful, but also very necessary for you to do a bit of leg work before asking.

We will need a pic of the effect, samples of what you've tried, and a description of why you don't like the outcome.

This will help us determine the best way to answer your question.
