View Full Version : Maya's Normal-Smoothing Algorithm flawed ?

I just noticed that Maya seems to have a kinda weird way to smooth / average Normals on some Parts of a mesh.

I attached some pics so u can see what i mean.

Did a Set-Normals-To-Face before doing it so it shouldnt be the problem.

Also the Mesh is symmetrical.

The red line shows roughly how the proper average should look.

Looking at the images, from front view it looks it has symetrical triangulation, but I suspect if you look from the side view probably that bottom vertex is not symetric.
You might have edge coming to the vertex from back vertex one side only.
