That's pretty easy to do really. For each frequency range that you want an amplitude out of, just create a new audio track in your audio editing program ( like Cool Edit or whatever ), and use a filter to cut all frequencies out of the original sound file except the frequency range that you want. Then for each group of particles or whatever you are controlling, use the different sound file with the limited frequency range.

By the way, if you want to smooth the motion if it's too jumpy, you can just use the audio to control a locator, and attach the actual geomety or whatever you are moving to the music to the locator, using a spring constraint, so it won't just jump from one point to another. Just an idea, I love using springs, such a cheap way to get a loose smooth look sometimes. :)

Hey all.

I need some help from any programmers...

AW released an AudioWave plugin a while ago. It outputs the amplitude of sound file.

What I was really wanting it to do is output the amplitude of different frequency ranges. Is that possible?

Its really cool... you can attach the amplitude output to the length of an extrude. Thereby creating a 3D graphic equalizer.

I'd love to try playing with audio amplitude controlled particles. But you kinda need more than one frequency range to play with to make it more interesting.

Can anyone help make this?

houdini can do that :) ,

i never used audiowave , is it good?

sorry for not being much help :\

Its okay. The plugin is really simple and its best if you use it with simple sound files. Like speech.

If you use a heavy metal track then the amplitude is maxed out all the time. So that makes for really boring animation since you can't tell it to only read the bass frequencies.

I think the amplitude also needs smoothing before its output to an attribute because its really jumpy... it would look alot better IMO if it didn't jump from x to y in the blink of an eye.

You can also scale the amplitude in a linear fashion. It would be cool if you had the option of exponentially increasing it.

So those are the things i'd like to improve... but i have no idea how. What sort of programming is involved? Can I edit the existing plugin or would I have to start from scratch?

Cool, cheers FBMachine. I outputted 10 different wav files at diff frequencies. Its a bit of an ass to manage but is quicker than making a mel-script or plugin (in the short-term anyway).

I'll post my experiment if it looks any good ;)

Is it just me (and my browser) or are your posts at the top???
