View Full Version : mental ray "product renders" & env reflection?

Hoi

yes, i have a bit of problem, thing is that i cant seem to find a way of controlling the env reflection map in the mr AD material vs the actual white enviroment,

basically it goes ok and similar to Master Zap's article here: http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

so what i have is a enviroment settig with 100% white, a plane with matte shadow material, a AD material on the object itself with a enviroment reflection map. right, so my problem is that I cant find a way to tweak the settings btw the two, ie the actual enviroment and the enviroment reflection map, to give the object less white and more of the enviroment reflection, have fiddled around with the special purpose maps and whatnot but cant get this tweak option going, anyone know what to do(or what not to do)? possible to comp it right, sure, but i try to improve on my mr skills(not that lucky today though...) so would like to get render done in the 3D app

Hi Slugger,

If I understand correctly. Your objects are reflecting more of the white environment than the reflections you are after and washing out your objects? Well in that case, it can be as simple as the falloff of your reflections. Try using a fresnel falloff and tuning the Index of Refraction to what you are after although default 1.6 should work fine. As for the reflections you are after, try using an HDR image and turning up the output and rgb levels in the output rollout of the texture. That way you can control your hot whites and dark darks without washing out your reflections.

yes, the white enviroment washes out the enviroment reflection map,
and you've got the right thing to try, seems to work with tweaking the BRDF/rollout Custom Reflectivity Functions :)
yep using a HDR as a env refl map
have tried to crank up diffirent things in the output for the env map and other things in the special purpose maps rollout, additional colour and stuff, so far that seems not to contribute that much to end result, but might be working better in conjunction with newfound tweak option,

*edit, you're right about the output tweaks aswell, for some reason i managed to put in one of the lores and wont work(as far as i can tell) with those, using one of the hires now,, works fine,
