Maya 8.5...

Any idea?

I ran onto something similar...it was a DB 0.2 I believe. Not too sure what was causing the issue though. I ended up installing 2009 and things seem to be better. I was previously using 2008. Do you have any fur in your scenes? Also do you have any newer versions of maya on your computer, like 2008 or 2009?

The only thing which helped at the moment was to switch bsp to hierarchy grid, that seemed to helped...
Oh, well...

I'm using maya 8.5, don't have 2008 or 2009...
