View Full Version : Possible new Course/DVD
jschleifer 05-06-2002, 04:55 AM Hey all,
I've been talking about doing another AWUGA course/DVD and was wondering what types of things you'd be interested in seeing.
This time there will be two of us presenting (if we do the course).. the focus would most likely be the same as the one I did last year.. rigging/scripting.. what types of things would you want to see?
Animation tips/tricks?
Rigging tips/tricks?
Mel scripts?
Pipeline?
Skinning?
etc etc..
any feedback is appreciated!

I'll kick this off by saying that, in my opinion, you can never know to much about rigging. Oh, and animation. Also, how to setup character controls (examples/ways to think about them) would be interesting.

Everything listed there sounds good. I can't think of any specifics to add.
I had a cool tutor at my school who used to get us to do a setup which would result in a problem and then tell us why this happened, how to solve it and how to avoid it in the future.
So i think maybe you should consider adding traps to the list.

hi jason,
i had the chance to see just 5 minutes of your dvd and must say that it's very very cool. i like the style you are explaining the things. not like a stiff tutor or something.
because i don't really know whats all on your dvd which is out , i hope that i don't make now suggestions on something you still have done :)
i would like to see (just an impression) of a muscle modell, or maybe a full setup for a character and then different changes for specific types of animation. (i found out that sometimes you have to change your setup slightly (or heavily) for just a 5 second anim.
so that's what i would like to see. i'm pretty sure that i will buy your dvd (if i've got enough money conserved).
P.S. are the things your doing on the dvd stuff from WETA or are you another one who's not allowed to show this or you will be killed by the cave troll (the best feature i have ever seen, and i'm a star wars fan)
have a nice day

Hi, IŽd like to see animation tricks and character rigging because this is the most difficult part of the process.
Pipeline you already explained in the other DVD.
Mel scripting is good, but I think you could let this to another DVD or explain only the useful things.
Thanks!!!
Hell yes. Keep making these great training DVDs, but please don't rush through anything at the end!

I'd like to see an entire DVD devoted to MEL scripting. :)
There just isn't enough info out there on MEL right now.

As much stuff as you can fit into as much time as you have! :D I'd be interesting mostly in rigging tips/tricks, and some usefull MEL scripts, and not just dumping the code on us, and showing it's use or anything like that. More like, showing how to tackle certain problems, and how you go about writing a script to solve those problems. Certainly not a line by line run down, just a mid-paced walkthrough really would be great. Anyway, I hope you get the green light!

MEL:
A MEL DVD that outlines what is covered in AW Certified Maya Training Courses [MEL Fundamentals] would be beneficial to the average user that has no access to the training. The MEL Fundamentals book outlines MEL and its uses but it would be better for a beginner to intermediate MEL user to see real world applications and scripts run real-time on a DVD.
I think that all aspects of rigging should be covered at a more intermediate level. Rigs that show ease of use, "idiot" proofing for file handout amongst non-technical artists, as well as pipeline tips and tricks that have come in invaluable through your aggressive production experience.
Thanks.

Hey all,

I'm definitly looking at aiming the course towards intermediate/advanced.. I'm bouncing a few ideas around in my head as to where to keep the focus.. I'll keep you all informed as to how it's coming along!

Hey Jason,
I'd like to see more advanced rigging techniques. Since you probably have just an hour, like last time, it'd be good to speak on more specific rigging techinques and then leave pipeline and MEL script descriptions for the accompanying docs.

I think it would be a good idea to have DVD's on all areas. That way nothing will be left out. ;)
I am interested in a lot of things but i feel that Mel is an issue not to many people address very well. Books do an ok job but it's nice to have a proper instructor show how to make and use them in a work flow.
i hope you do end up doing something.
cheers

Howdy ya'll,
sounds like there's demand for a number of good DVD's out there..
what I'm thinking right now is doing it again on animation rigging.. but with a focus on making a rig that is as fast as and clean as possible. Talking about the delicate ballance between speed and functionality.. you have to have a rig that's fast enough to use, but it's got to have enough functionality to do everything you need it to do.
Then I'll talk about animation tips for animating shots as quickly as possible.
I'll post more details as they become available..
thanks!
