View Full Version : how to scale adjacent faces at same time ?

ok I am trying to learn xsi and am having a bit of trouble here.
What I am trying to do is split a quad polygon, extrude it and than scale the 2 new faces in the same direction - but I dont want them stuck together if you know what I mean.
I create a polygon mesh primitive. Then I enter edge mode by pressing "e" and select the top and bottom edge of one of the faces on the side of the cube.
I then right click and do a split edges with split control. Than I deselect all, than press "U" for polygon mode and select both of the new faces. I than go into "extrude along axis".
Heres where the trouble starts - when I click transform and
move any of the scale sliders the 2 selected faces dont scale in the way they should - in other words one face scales up and down and the other scales sideways. This is if I uncheck the merge option. If I leave the merge option checked, the faces scale in sort of a diagonal way, still nowhere near what I want.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks,
Brett

In the extrude along axis property page, uncheck the box labeled "Merge"

Tried that - with merge unchecked one face will scale vertically and one scales horizontally.
With merge checked both faces scale sort of diagonally.

What I want is to split a polygon vertically, extrude both faces along axis, than use the transform panel in extrude along axis to scale the faces horizontally and to seperate the faces in the process.

Now the strange thing is, if I go to the opposite face on the cube and do the split edges and extrude along axis it works fine - both faces will scale in the same manner and if I uncheck merge they will seperate properly.

For those of you who have used maya, this is done by using split polygon, than selecting the 2 vertices on the new edge and using split vertex. How can this be done in softimage ?

Thanks
Brett

Just throwing an idea here.

Perhaps you should not only split the face of the cube you wish to extrude, but also the other faces. In other words, you should try to split the face with an edge loop and then perform the extrusion.

To split with edge, press the Split Edge key ( ] ) and click with mmb.

Ok I tried splitting the cube all the way around - same problem.
I did discover that if I create the cube with 2 faces on the side initially than they will scale seperately and uniformly.
I also discovered that if one poly on the side of the cube gives me problems with extruding and scaling the poly on the exact opposite side of the cube will split, extrude and scale fine.

I dont have a clear pic of what your trying to do but try using different scale params.. such as.. Local, view and object. the 3 being used together can usually get you what you need .. ko?
