hello all - I saw some inspiring models of skrews and decided to make one. I created a simple circle with a little triangle on the edge and "lofted" it down a line. Then I tried to "twist" and when I did - the whole thing warped out of shape, and the more twists I made - the worse it got!!!

how do I make a skrew???

and how do I make a SPRING ?

THANK YOU :)

edit: sorry about the previous title, I'll be good from now on equinoxx

like most things in max, there are about a hundred different ways to go about making a screw. here are a few off the top of my head:

1) instead of using a circle, use a helix spline as your path. this should allow you to use the helix controls to determine the number and spacing of your threads. then loft your triangle along that helix

2) create two helixes (sp?) one for the outsise peak of the thread and on for the inside low-point of the thread and then convert them to editable spline, attach them together and add lines so that you can use the surface modifier on them to get a patch-based surface (although you'll need to be familiar with surface tools for this one)

I realize there are tonns of ways to make ANYTHING in 3DS, but perhaps there is some very simple command that I have never heard of - that does it?

like I said - making a _SPRING_ ... how can you make a "perfect" one from scratch? ... making a loft along a curved path? but then the path perhaps wouldn't be "perfect"

thanks to anyone ahead of time for your helpful replies :buttrock:

A helix is a spiral path. You can set the number of truns, height and the radius for the top or the bottom. You can use on of these for the loft path to create a perfect spring coil.

This is from VisualBoo's extensive list in the tutorial section of this board. Covers step by step process on how to make the object you are asking about. Also if you have a second, head over to his website and download his textures, they are awesome!! Actually they arent completely his per se, A bunch of people from the forums got together and contributed. Anyways, good luck. ;)
