The key is independence of controls i.e hip, chest and head need to be independant, plus have a main control for them. The head and possibly arms, should as a bonus have some form of space switching from local, parent and world space. Plus avoid using the classic look at method for the eyes/head as it destroys the eyeline, rather use space switching to keep it in parent space - this allows for it to maintain a direction, rather than aiming at its target.

Hey S0n1c0,
I agree on all point with eek. Also,
The legs and feet will be different on a dog than you are used to. Dogs walk on their toes as opposed to "flat footed" humans/or bears/elephants etc. Which will change how you setup a foot rocker.

Reference, reference, reference. Pictures of skeletons, muscles, and videos of the specific animal moving are going to be your best friend.

hi
Like Mr.haffner told take enough image and footage references as possible for muscle anatomy and movement. And when it comes to implementing things in maya u can refer to quadruped rigging partI and partII by Javier Solsona .
It will give u a fairly good idea about building a quadruped rig which is animator friendly.
