View Full Version : Underwater animation: cloth and humans
Sponce 03-08-2009, 03:22 PM Hi, I'm struggling to find any reference for underwater animation/drowning sequences.
Can anyone suggest some good references for this scene? Movies or other animations would be great. We have two characters falling underwater. Both wearing full length trenchcoats. The second guy will pull the first down underwater by his ankle.
Obviously this is a super specific scenario but my main priority is seeing some underwater clothes or robes. Thanks for your help, can provide some concepts if required.

well, i have some background in 3D, and swimming, and recently, drowning (writing this with a bad cough/cold or a mild case of pneumonia) ... so i'll take a crack at it !
i would say the behavior has 2 parts (maybe more). one is the motion - the other is the optics (underwater reflection/ refraction).
the "floaty" behavior of cloth in water - is that what you're trying to get ?
if so, one tutorial that comes to mind is Joe Gunn's underwater scene
http://joegunn3d.com/Tutorials.html
specifically, the "cloth for seaweeds", which uses cloth & skin wrap functions
http://joegunn3d.com/Tuts/ClothSeaWeeds.htm
for the underwater look, i'm a noob. other than using particles to get the look of bubbles going up, i don't know what to suggest for this part.
do you want the distorted look that a person underwater would see, or the more clear look that would be obtained by, for example, using a camera underwater ?

We're trying to fake it because we only have a few weeks to animate. I guess we're leaning more on the side of almost suffocation. http://i40.tinypic.com/28a5m3s.png here's the concept for the final shot.
I actually love you by the way. Hope you get better soon.
