Title: Tam's Sword Study
Name: Veronica Purpura
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop
Hey everyone. This is my latest piece. It's from a sword study I did for a male character of my fantasy novels. I often make character designs, customes, weapons, and such in my sketchbook. I wanted to paint some of my weapon studies, and I finally made some time to do it.
Tam's sword was very unique in design and shape, so I always held a soft spot for it. I scanned it into the computer, set it up on Photoshop, and started painting it (background, blade, and then handle).
The shape of the blade was originally inspired from a Dungeons and Dragons idea of a Githyaki silver sword (yes, I play D&D, and I love it. Boo-yah.). After I had the sword shape for the blade, I just kept adding and refining the blade design until it suited me (like when you polish something until it glows).
I was trying to balance the weight of the different widths of the blade so that it didn't look too symmetrical or unbalanced. I kept it to a study project instead of my favorite method of high rendering, so the metals and details are not super rendered. But I'll be do more like that later on.
If you have recommendations on ways to render metallics and metal lighting techniques and/or brushes, I would love to hear about it. Please send comments, recommendations, and critiques. I would love to have responses to this project. Thank you.

Nice concept... But I think it has too much curves. This makes the sword look weak. It gives a feeling that it could break into three parts. May be you can add some straight lines. These are my suggestions. Good luck :)

I didn't want to have to explain the swords properties (it's very D&D like in that way). The swords not suppose to be able to break and the design reminecent of another species. I know that in real world this design wouldn't work. I'm more wondering into the design and/or rendering of the sword itself. Also, wondering if anyone has recommendations for good metallic rendering techniques. I thank you for your comments, and your argument is sound. No harm done. Thanks for the comment. I hope for more.

Hi,
First of all, I just want to say that I didn't want to make any offense. I like playing D&D and FRP games. The sword reminds me elven swords. Good luck with your project. I am sure it will end with a very nice looking sword.:)

no offense taken. I just felt that I didn't explain the reasoning behind allowing such curves on the blade very well, and I wanted to avoid comments and confusion on that point (my bad). it would take quite a bit to offend me. Don't worry. thanks for sending comments.

Design has a lot to do with function so linainverse23 had a valid point.
As far as painting metal goes, look at photos of the real thing. Try and analize what you see there.
Improved contrast levels and a clear light source, even if its just ambiant light, would help.

To me it looks a bit too thick... maybe too big brushes on the edges? but it's only subjective opinion :)... it really looks like elfish swords and I like the design! more details and strong lightsource will make it look much better :)

ya, I agree. I need to find some subject to pracctice metalic lighting with (don't do it enough). I'm so used to subtle shading (I do a lot of figures and creatures). Not sure what you mean by thick. as in thickness of the sword blade, the contours of the edges, the handle, the brushwork? (if it's to the blade thickness, it's suppose to be that thick. it's not a thin-bladed sword). Let me know which it is if you can? that would be an intresting observation. Thanks for the comment and constructive criticism.

yes I mean the blade thickness... but if it suppose to be that thick it's ok :) I've just said what I saw and thought that would help because sometimes it's difficult to see something in self work... I need months looking on something done by myself to see mistakes :D

hello there Veronica, good job...:).
for painting metal, let me share what i know and have experienced. silver, like what uve painted here, gets colors from its surrounding. the surrounding, a definite light source, light's color etc will effect its appearence. the best way to have a clear understanding is to paint any simple clear silver object from life, place various objects, having different colors next to the silver object and see, im sure ull get to see how they effect the silver. the best thing to do is to put all the lights off (at night) and light a candle, or a lighter and bring it close to the silver (a knife, etc), i very much hope ull get what im trying to say here. i suggest, that always paint silver with a little surrounding, so the viewer get a complete idea.
best. happy painting..:).

Well now, that's a suggestion. Thank you Waheed Nasir. That's some very helpful suggestions you gave (I rarely get such detailed info). Thank you. I have a silver hair ornament, so try it out with that. Thank you very much. I'll look forward to your next project (still in the beginning stages of my current one). ^_^

It reminds me style of first game of "Heroes of Might & Magic" series, and that's nice :)

Nice concept.I like your design.I just have a small crit on the textured background.I think it's not very well match with the fine painted sword.Just my opinion.Good work anyway.Keep it up.
