I just installed maya on my new Mandrake linux edition (8.2) but it will not run (just makes the pc "hang" in a grey screen) even though i have tried almost EVERY #$%$#! THING i could do.... A friend of mine told me that it would run only on redhat linux but that seems a bit strange though because they both use the same kernel and kde..... Please give me a tip..... Anyway.... Thanks in advance for any answers....

What version of Maya are you using? 3.0 is certified for Red Hat 6.2, while 4.0 is certified for 7.1 and 7.2. Try visiting the Linux links from this page (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Tmpl/Maya/html/index.jhtml?page=/en/Community/Support/qualified_hardware/qualified_hardware_m.html&style=normal) to see if any of those documents can help. Perhaps all that's needed is an update to one of your libraries, but unless you move to Red Hat you might be stuck!

hiya everyone- first post here. i recognize a few other faces from my travels, 'sup yall... anyway, you're correct about the kernel, most linux distros are exactly the same with the exception of installers, what apps they pack inside, and sometimes they write their own drivers- therein lies the problem, maya doesn't like third party video drivers (including XFree86 in my experience). If you're using a GeForce, you're in luck- NVidia is forward-thinking enough to like Linux. just go to their site and get the official drivers for your chip, and all should be well. if you don't have an nvidia chip...put on yer virtual walking shoes and hit the pavement...i got rid of my 3dlabs VX1 cause they sucked too much to support Linux.

I have made maya work in mandrake distribution but..... there is always a but.... I can't make the rendering work..... it says i haven't configured the OpenGL.... Even thought i have configured both GLUT and Mesa and even the driver for my grafics card.... If you know what i must do, please tell me... Once again, thanx in advance.....

Can you play with a game like UT on your Linux or Quake III? (to see if your OpenGL works).
Have U compiled your kernel with dri support in kernel's section "character devices"?
Don't panic for your Radeon, it RuleZ under Linux!
Yes the drivers is integrated within latest kernel ;)

I forgot...
after kernel's compilation, open the XF86Config file (/etc/X11/)
and insert in the modules's section (usualy the first section):

glx (it's very important)
dri

save, exit
and make a startx.

what's up? :)
