View Full Version : Rigging with Hoses in 3DS

Hello!

Here's my problem. I'm rigging this robot character. The tubes are made using the Hose extended primative:

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9341/gasbot1.th.jpg (http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gasbot1.jpg)

However when I rotate the biped, the hoses behave strangely. The hose primative links to the pivot points of the cyliners it connects to. When I rotate the biped the cylinder rotates, however the pivot point appears to not rotate with it, it only moves with it. As a result the orientation of where the hose starts doesn't follow the ortation of the cylinder it is connected to, it remains the same as when I originally made it. As a result, when I move the whole model all the hoses are shooting off in the wrong direction.

Is there any way to solve this problem, or are there any other better ways to a similar thing? Cheers!

It happens even when it is not linked. Is this just a problem with the hose or something??

Parent the end parts of your hoses to Dummys which in turn are parented either to static pieces of geometry or directly to parts of your biped. This should solve your problem and provide you with an additional level of control of form of the dummys.

Have fun

Chris

BTW: It might be off topic, but hey, nice Toon shader. What are you using. MR, InkīnīPaint or Final Toon?

I'll give that a go. Currently I reached a compromise by using splines, with one vert at each end, and then using linked xform to attach them to my robots geometry. It works okay, and I'm not going for uber realism.

I'm using Ink 'n' Paint here. It's not the final model...I usually layer on a few falloff maps to give the robot a bit of a sheen. I've never used Final Toon. I'll have to check it out.

Currently I'm still looking for a toon shader which reacts to the scenes light colour.

you should check out the "spline IK control" modifier. It's very simple to setup and even simpler to hand animate.
