View Full Version : modeling and rendering
TheShaddix 07-05-2003, 10:03 PM i have 1 questions about maya,
1) does maya have rendering iterations when u apply a meshsmooth to it? for instance, if you modeled a hi-poly model and u dont want to apply meshsmooth with 2 or 3 iterations cuz itll slow down ur whole scene, u want it to show up only when rendered. 3Dstudio max has this option where u can adjust rendering iterations for your meshsmooth, but does maya have it???
Thanks for replying.

You can use a smooth-proxy model where you can edit or use the lowpoly version and hide the hi-poly one until rendering. Sames bunches of time when animating, skinning, and test-rendering.
Easy to use, and reversible.

thanks man, if this really does work then im happy , cuz its a very useful stuff.
Could you please give me some basic steps to set it up.
like how to use it with an already made low poly car model??
appreciate ur reply.
select your low poly model - polygons/smooth proxy.
you will get two new layers, one with your low poly model assigned to it, and one with the smoothed model assigned to it. just make the layer with the smoothed model invisible while you are animating/modeling or what else. then before rendering just make the layer visible ;)
hope that's what you mean

ok, when i tried this method on some box extruded on both sides it worked fine, but when i applied smooth proxy to my low poly car it told me that "No object Matches Name: Bla bla" , hmm, i dont have a clue man, any help would be greatly appreciated .
and if you can tell me how to connect splines and then make a surface from it??
like to make a hood for a car, u take 2 splines at first, and then u connect it , then how do u make a surface ??

You can go into Render Globals and put in an expression which when rendered will smooth your polys. I do'nt know the expression though.
