Blender runs very well under Ubuntu and will also run on very minimal hardware. Just dont try to do any high rez fluid sims or million poly sculpts and you should be fine.
Edit : Also, last time I tried to do an apt-get for Blender it returned version 2.46. Downloading the precompiled version of 2.48a from Blender.org or compiling from source work just fine tho. That might just be for 64 bit Ubuntu tho.

Oh yes I forgot this. Also it is not yaf(a)ray (0.1.0) from the apt, its the old yafray (0.0.9).....so I guess my previous post is intantly outdated and you should not do it at all if you want the latest version, or you will be having odd problems if you install both--it can be confusing.
BTW is a mini 12 a little laptop thing or something? in the case it is-don't forget a 3 button mouse-- every time I try laptop + blender, the interface is very cumbersome without it.

Just grab the 'Linux x86-32' download off the Blender.org site. Save it to your hard drive and double click the 'blender' icon inside the folder.
Edit: if for some reason it doesnt work, goto synaptic and check your Python version and to be sure you have 'glibc 2.3.6' installed.

Let me rephrase that question, I tried to get into the synaptic package manager but it' asking for a password. Can't remember password. How can I change or turn off password setting.

The only way I know of to recover a Linux root password is to reinstall the OS.

Got it. Loaded Blender and yafray. How does Yafray work? Is it built into Blender or a standalone.

I'm back. When I open Blender, either fullscreen or window, the app loads, but the Blender banner stays up. if I move my mouse it flashes the modeling area, but it flashed out of view.
Any ideas?

Try updating the drivers for your graphics card. Other than that...I have no idea.

Go into the Screen Effects panel on the Ubuntu Preferences (I think it's under Appearance -- don't have an Ubuntu box in front of me right now). If it's not already there, set it to No Effects.

I have had similar problems with ATI video cards before. I fixed it by installing compiz config (sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager) going to advanced-workarounds and making sure that "Legacy Fullscreen support" is enabled.
