Looking good Mr A. One thing that is bringing this work down - the eyes. Either make them pure white or black. With black he will have that creepy'n'evil "spider" feel about him, but with white eyes he will gain a spiritual aura. Perhaps you could do black-gloss eyes with a glow around the edges of his eyes?
Another suggestion would be to give him cats eyes? There has always been speculation amungst the fans as to whether Mumm-Ra is an Ancient Thundercat himself...

Damn, somehow I missed your entry in this challenge up until now. lol Great to have you aboard as well.
This looking great so far. He already has a lot of character.
There's something about the headpiece that's bothering me though. The modeling is great and I cant quite put a finger on it. Is it going to extend furhter back? Perhaps its the lack of depth, which would make it difficult to "hold" on to the head. I'll let you know once I can pinpiont it. Also that bump looks rather heavy, if you ask me, while the cloth texture looks very nice. The cobras look great, btw. For some reason I really like modeling on the teeth & gums. lol Very well done!
I'm guessing its a bit early to comment on the body anatomy, so I'll wait for your next updates on that.
Cheers!

Thanks for the crits guys. The anatomy thing, Ive yet do do a proper pass with referance, sofar its all modeled from memory, I used to have a similar physique myself, but waay smaller. The bump on the gold or the cloth, you mean? Theres no bump on the body, all the detail is modeled. But I have done the cat eyse thing and it looks way better. I think with the helmet its quite ungainly, would fall off with out straps which ill add. The design of mum-ra isnt very good, hes more norse than egyptian. But Im trying to make it connect and still feel real. I was thinking of red hair to replace the red cloth coming out of his helm in the cartoon. What do you think?

Looking good so far fella,
Only one crit from me and that's to do with the hands, one too many joints me thinks!?
As for the head-dress/red hair, I like what you have going on now so my vote would be for it to stay, I had to search for a mum-ra reference so is this the alternative you mean with the red hair!?

Thanks for the responses, been a bit busy with work atm.
I dunno about blue, I gotta get a decent zombie colour. Im remodeling the torso now, update that soon, the symbol on the chest will be a tatoo or brand, prefer the brand, its more mystic.. The face will be mudboxed to pit in creases and wrinkles, bandages are coming, so is some other cool stuff, stay tuned. :)

I had the exact same impression and I think I know what it might be. Googling Egytian headdresses, I think I have come up with a reason/solution (not that there is an error, It looks great, only it could look better fashionwise).
The fold for your headdress starts in behind the ear, whereas when I was looking at images, I saw that the fold actually starts somewhere on the front corner of the forehead. The material apears to be thick, or at least not very suple, so when it tries to fall down around the sides of the head, it actually extends out a little before flowing downwards, creating a ridge that runs along the top/side of the head. Combined with the same effect on the back of the head, there should be a bulk of cloth there making the more angular look that we're used to.
Keep up the good work, man.

Haha I know exactly how you feel. Not sure if you were planning on tackling this during the sculpting process, but there's some funky business going on in his palm. It's as if he's grown a tumor on the base of his thumb. This Tumor seems to have grown towards the top of his hand as well. In fact, I would take a little time in the whole hand area. The fingers need to be resized in my opinion, and the transition from forearm to wrist to hand needs a bit of work. Apart from that, I don't see anything else that should be corrected during the modeling process.
Cheers

Well, I guess it depends on your design. Mumm-ra the Everliving still has some wrappings on him though not nearly as much as the regular Mumm-ra. And you've got the massive gold armor pieces. It looks good just a bit far from the original.

A little test to see how far I could push mudbox. Spent an hour sculpting to see if the whole mesh needs to be cut up or not, looks like I can go another level of detail bove this, but I think this will do. Gonna rig and pose him now, had problems with a ati driver over the weekend, lots of bsod's and uninstalls just to get mudbox working again, those ati drivers are really badly put together.

It's such a pain sometimes that most people really cannot judge a wip properly. In case of CG, most people are so detail-oriented that they need models to come out of ZB etc for them to even begin to see potential. The crucial point they are missing is, that not finite detail, but silhouette and contour are the primary factors, next to the inital design, determining outcome quality. I can get away with so-so detail on any model, but a bad silhouette can never be remedied by mucho and primo detail. But whatever.....
Anyways, this is continuously looking great, although I cannot really see where you are going with the flow of those wrinkles/lines. It's not exactly muscle fibers, is it!? Right now it just looks kind of weird.
Cheers!
Airflow
03-31-2009, 09:19 AM
Thanks, I kinda feel that myself. If its not uber sculpted it dont count as much. I was debating how far to poly model the character as I dont want to too heavily focus on displacements and sculpting, and as a real world test, generally fx companies want as much poly modeled as possible so they have control of the polys and are not totally at the mercy of displacement tweaks to stop spikes and flaws at render time.
Yeah, it was a test to see if I could get away with sculpting the whole basemesh or if I needed to break up the mesh. I took an hour to do the test so it not anatomically based. When Im doing the actual sculpt I will break out the anatomy charts again to decide whats bone, fat, desicated skin, muscle, tendon and veins. Its gonna be difficult because technically he is regenerated when he becomes the super mum-ra, so how much is dead and how much is renewed. Im kinda trying to approch it like it was a vfx shot, thus I tried changing stuff to look more realistic and less toony. I seriously think the design on mum-ra is pretty bad, he looks like an amalgam of different aincent civilisations, mainly viking and saxon. Not very egyptian.
Update in a few mins, I just finished rigging him.
TheRazorsEdge
03-31-2009, 09:37 AM
I take it you are working in MB2009? I'm still doing most of my sculpting in MB1, since I cant handle that flat-shaded bug. But for texturing its great. Who needs millions of polys, if you can just paint insanely detailed bump based on texture resolution!?!
Looking forward to your next update.
Cheers!
Airflow
03-31-2009, 09:48 AM
Yeah mb2k9 sp2. I had some issues with the latest ati catalyst driver, made anything using dx9 really unstable, so bia hh and mirrors edge would bsod my machine, and mudbox and max would not load. I love texturing in it, its a pleasure, really. Ill use the bump to do pores, and blemshes, I dont wanna really do a disp, more tempted to export the high rez and just render that out. But Ill do tests to see what I can get best.

Will you kill me if the first thing I thought of on looking at this was a VERY ANGRY Genie?
:D:D:D He's so glowy, I wanna ask him to grant me a wish! I think part of it is the background color; it sorta blends together a little. None of this is really a critique, btw. Just the first thing that popped into my head. hehe
I'll have to agree with previous posters by saying that I like this incarnation better than the sculpt. I think the silhouette you've chosen will be better without micro-detail anyway, because it has a more cartoony feel.
If you just REALLY DO wanna sculpt, I would try to stick to sculpting broader details that emphasize features, rather than trying to go in and show intense wrinkles and stuff.
Awesome stuff so far man. BEEFY!
Airflow
03-31-2009, 01:19 PM
The original plan was to do intense detail down to pores and stuff, like a creature shot. The test sculpt was just a kind of play, I plan to have veins popping and lots going on. What he will be reaching for is the sword of omens, so the "on steroids" bit is what happens if he ever got power extreemed so to speak.
Its dark cos I never set the gamma

not too keen on the speculars used for the gold on his costume. they don't look right to me because of the white reflected light.
Anyway, I'm looking at photos of gold, and I have my own gold coins out and they aren't reflecting white, that's all this on knows
Aside from that and sausage fingers not much else to say at this point.

Thanks goes out to everybody who posted in here, its appreciated.
Lol, well technically he was kinda an mix of yellow, blue and purple, like a bruise, gave him that undead look.
I think Ill re-render the final in a better angle and knock back the flames to balance it abit more. I just wanted to get my stand in renders done now, as I remeber the last minute problems I had on the Starwars Tribute, (Submitted with seconds to go).
So here are the other images, Cant seem to find the finals thread, though I saw it 2 days ago.

Well done fella, looks great, I also agree with Felix about a little more contrast, I thought I'd try a auto-level in PS, and this brings out some of the blue. Looking forward to seeing the new angle and again well done on a great piece and highly detailed it is too...

I like some of the new angles a lot better. They really show off more of your great work in much better ways. I'd probably go with the first one in post #89 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=5805904&postcount=89).
Cheers!

Heres the final with the position better altered.

Hey Rob - congratulations on getting him finished!
I really love the broken up ground/pedestal... How did you do it?
In compositional terms, he's getting a bit lost in all the surrounding colour/information.. If the light source threw him into stronger contrast & shadow it could help add some definition. I also think some motion blur on the rocks & debris would really help push it.
Good luck!

You did a great job on this Rob.
I gotta be honest and tell you I wasn't crazy about it at the beginning. The gemoetry masses were harsh and jarring, and your renders were kinda crazy. I was interested though and kept following closely. Towards the 2nd half of the challenge it really took off. Constant updates and dedication I believe made this entry what it was. The pose is VERY convincing and you can really see the power coursing through him based on this and his expression as well. Over all you ended up with a really great entry IMO.
You didn't get any of my votes but there was a couple categories where you were a close second (best diorama was the closest), So I wanted to take the time and at least give you a mention here on your thread.
A great job on Mumm-Ra, my friend, and I'm really happy for you that you got it entered on time. Keep up the good work.
