Hi. It's been awhile since I've done anything new in Rhino. I decided to put my Minotaur on a brief hold while I got this little bugger out of my system. He's a blend between three different ideas. One from Aaron St. Goddard, one from an artist whose name and website I can't recall, and one from myself. So far this is what I have.

The model is already partially finished but I thought I'd show you guys and gals the steps...

I figure I should be nearly done if not done by tomorrow. We'll see.

I was wondering...what's your opinion on hair? I would like the underside of the creature to have some fur but I'm not sure modeling it is the best way to go. Rhino doesn't have plug-ins for hair.

Here I've started the legs and that is where I'll leave you for now. I am going to go see the Hulk for the first time...I hope it doesn't suck. I've been avoiding it out of fear. Thanks for viewing and for any crits you have.

Hey teyon! This charcter is looking great... I like his lines and proportions so far. I hope we get to see him finished. Not sure of a hair plug-in for rhino but I think maya fur would work good for this...slow but good results:)...Keep up the great modeling teyon...all nurbs right?

Thanks Fetus. Yes, all Nurbs. I have the PLE of Maya and XSI discovery edition, so I only have access to XSI's hair. :( Still, it'll be fun. Thanks a bunch and when I get back, I post how I merged the concepts to get the new design.

:wavey: I'm back from the flick. It was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I liked it but I felt it was a bit overly drawn out in spots. Maybe Marvel should slow down their movie craze a bit and carefully pick and choose their next batch of films. With movies like the Punisher (of which I have no hope for) they may be hard pressed to keep the momentum going.

So, like I said, I'm back, and with my return, I bring an update.

THe legs aren't quite finished (actually, I just started the hind legs) but they will do for now. I still have his paws, arms, hands and head to do. yippeee!

Oh, and here's the conceptual combo. The beastly half comes from Aaron St. Goddard and the upper half comes from someone I can't remember. It looks a bit like Bernie Wrightson but who can be sure? Ignore the head in the pic, as I have created my own which will be attached later.

Note: you can see where the two images overlap and I used the pencil tool to suggest a connection.

Here are some wires of the current state. I kind of fell asleep last night without doing too much.

There seems to be slight lip where the blend of the shoulder meets the body but I think it's best if I don't screw with it. I don't want any nasty things cropping up later. I'm working in halves, so everything is going to look symmetrical until I finally matchsrf and mergesrf the model. Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks! Still lots to do though. I'm so nervous about his head. Is it just me or are the legs a bit wide in the front? Oh well. I'll make a friend for him and fix the legs then. Thanks agian.

Here I have completed the feet and moved on to the hands
http://members.lycos.co.uk/teyon/Images/models/post12.jpg

There's a slight problem with the way I modeled the joint/bones in the bottom half of one of his front legs and I'll have to go back and tweak it later. The hands came out okay, I'm not completley happy with the blends between the fingers and the hand.

Here, judge for yourself:

I should be starting the head tonight or tomorrow. Actually, maybe the thumb blend is fine but I should tweak the finger blends...or the fingers themselves. Take care gang.

Oh, and here's a quickie of the underside of the hand. Still all NURBs in Rhino if you were wondering.

another amazing model by teyon  it's like an alien centaur! cool. though i see what you mean about the hands. it's like the fingers don't flow into it. they need tendons.

the edges of the abdominal muscles are too sharp

your model is looking amazing, when i saw the update on the feet and hands wow that is really great also your reference that your looking at did you draw that character? that is a great design

Teyon
07-09-2003, 01:42 PM
Thanks gang, I've had no time to work on it more :annoyed: but I hope to soon. DrakeX, that's exactly what I thought too but I'm a little hard pressed to figure out how to do it with NURBs. Maybe I'll take the model into GMAX and tweak some webbing out. Soulstorm, I made the abs sharper because of the back muscles. I figured if the back was that muscular, the front had to show it too. If anyone else thinks they are a bit too sharp, I'll gladly tone it down based on the opinion of the majority. :)

Levitateme, while I could have drawn one myself, I didn't do it this time (I only came up with a head...which I'll post the concept for later). As I mentioned before, the image I based the body on is a combination of two images. One by Aaron St. Goddard, and another by an artist whose name I don't know (though I'm beginning to think it is Bernie Wrightson). As I was looking at Aaron's site and stumbled across the image LOTRbeast_thumb, I rememberd an image I had in my HD that I use for inspiration which was the upper half of some strange, decomposing creature. I thought the two would look well together and they did. I then decided to design my own head for the creature, as the head that was there looked to bland. Once I started modeling, I decided to leave off the decomposing parts.

Thanks again. I'll be back in a few with the concept for the head.

Teyon

....Never got around to posting the concept, instead, I started the head. Actually, I'm nearly finished with the head. I haven't decided on ears though. If they should be reptilian holes or if they should be something more bull/horse like or simply not there at all. Before you ask, no, this is not some geriatric warrior, I simply haven't detailed his upper lip area yet. It will be as wrinkly as the bottom and the creature's teeth will be sticking outside of the mouth like a Balrog's. I have to do the interior of the mouth before I can place the teeth though, and of course, properly blend his spikes to his head...they're just stuck there right now. Comments welcome.

hi teyon, you said your going to model a ear on him? i likeit like that i think that looks natural. i think a ear would make him look like an attempt tomake him human. i would leave his head how is, but do the extra work you were talking about.

Teyon
07-10-2003, 09:57 PM
Thanks. yeah, I hadn't decided if I wanted to add an ear or not. I'm leaning toward leaving it as is. Thanks again!

Nice work Teyon, exempliary work as usual. My only question is with the eyes, what is going on there there is all these creases in the eyes yet nothing shows up on the face. You might want to fix that. Plus it looks like they are not attached yet? Still awesome job.

hey, you know maya's nurbs system, right? are on maya the same methods you've used with rhino? cuz Ive tried to get modeling with maya nurbs but fillets, trims and so on are evil for me :(
have you been using those methods? cuz your model's legs seems to have no seams.. wow

fantastic modeling skills by the way :applause: hehe

I really like where you are going with this. nice job.

only comment is that I think it looks a little odd where the back legs join to the torso, almost like the muscle is sagging down, but other than that lookin fantastic. Keep it up

wow the head looks great Teyon, i look forward to the fangs. are u going to put a little bit more definition on the forehead? it seems a bit plain to me.

TetsuoShima, Maya nurbs is a bit different than Rhino. Rhino really makes NURBS modelling easier IMO. for example, Rhino automatically attaches surfaces that has been filleted or boolean union.

Teyon probably starts with a Loft to get a basic shape then starts point pulling the CVs while inserting isoparms to get more details. the legs are probably connected using Rhino's Blend tool after Trimming it. it basically creates a surface to "blend" 2 surfaces together based on the continuity that u chose.

i haven't gone too deep in Maya NURBS so i dunno wat the Maya equivalent is (if there's any) for Rhino's Blend tool. anyone??

Looks great so far! Seems like will be a tough guy...
Like very much the way the legs are - not the usual centaur-like legs.

Are there many NURBS patches in his body? How are you planning to do the textures, one map for each patch, or there´s some kind of shortcut?

Looking forward to more updates.
