If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I'm hoping to use it as an excuse here, but I'm spinning my gears about how to do it. Using Maya 08, I'm trying to recreate the effect achieved here:

Larger image does better justice (http://fc66.deviantart.com/fs44/f/2009/063/2/9/3D_logo_RD_by_Riccardo2503.png)

It appears to be a smokey glass material that actually illuminates the ground plane around it without blowing out the rest of the object. I've been able to create a sphere to illuminate the immediate area around it by using the iridescence slider and final gather but the transparency of the object is completely lost.

Or maybe this was done with multiple passes, using multiple point lights and masks. I dunno. If I need to move this over to the lighting threads, I will, but it seems like something could be done with native material settings.

I'll bet that all they did was to use a material on the top surface that doesn't reflect the illumination of certain selected spotlights.

Remember... this is not real-life. If you want a particular light not to shine on a particular surface, or to magically shine through a surface, or to reflect the illumination of a particular lamp in some totally-unnatural way, "the computer is all too happy to oblige." "Cheaters welcome."

"Cheaters Welcome"... I love it.

Yeah, the best success I had playing around on my own was to give the topmost faces a different material than the clear glass sides and use 2 point lights along with a directional to lite the overall scene. My result isn't too bad, just not as dramatic.
