View Full Version : Just under 2 weeks left in the June/July CG Challenges
lildragon 07-05-2003, 01:07 PM Heya everyone, with just under 2 weeks left in the challenges we urge you to start entering your entry into the challenge site if you haven't already done so http://www.cgchallenge.com/challenge.php there's alot more entrants out there than these numbers show ;)
Also our next batch of challenges will commence the first week in August '03, that is after Siggraph, reason being is that we won't have time to prep the challenge topics as all the CGNetworks crew along with most of the Challenge committee will be attending SIGGRAPH this year.
Render on, you have much time left ;)

I would've finished my entry, but lack of information in the competition rules made my model disqualified :)
Anyway.. Good luck to the rest of ya! :)

Okey, first off this was my entry WIP ( http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72652 ) I teamed up with a fairly skilled skinner ( since I've never skinned a lowpoly character before ).
And since there's nothing in the rules about teaming up I thought it was ok (even though you got a point about it not being fair to other competitors). But based on your answer to my question here ( http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66798&perpage=15&pagenumber=2 ) I really thought it was okey, since my mate and I agreed that I would enter the model for final judging.
But later Ivars told me to look in the animation challenge discussion thread, look on the q about teaming up ( http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66799&perpage=15&pagenumber=2 ).
Hmm since it's not menioned in the rules, it's fairplay.. but you can't mention every single, little detail I know.. So I guess we made a bad choice to team up and I know it's not fair to the other competitors. :) *phew*

CG MONKEY:
yeah, being fair to other competitors is honourable. it is a good trait, and one that you have now shown publicly...
we appreciate that.
I look forward to seeing your work in the next challenge!

Re: CGMonkey.
Shame it turns out that you can't enter it.
Still, since your coming to our meet-up how about a few basic animations and slap them on a CD to show us? The untextured model and sketch are really good!
( BTW, the head in the corner of the WIP looks really cool! )

I was kind of surprised myself that teams were not allowed:hmm: I would have thought the game section would be like the classic section and anything goes. I was even suprised that we were not allowed to make multiple characters and add some vehicles and maybe even a background if we had the time.
Otherwise, Once before, you guys extended the deadline because you knew you would take a brake for awhile, is there any chance of that happenning here?

I was thinking about it, but we did that before and the Arch Viz guys got really pissy about it, caused an uproar, so I'll have to speak it over with Jeff and the other challenge crew to see if we should.

ok, sounds cool. There seems to be quite a few entries that could use the extra time, so since there is going to be a gap between the contests, I just figured perhaps it's possible. . . I guess we shall see.

I second Apt pupils thoughts on an extension if at all possible. With a delay of about three weeks until the next challenge more time to really flesh out this challenge would be great ,I am sure Apt and myself are not the only ones whom are thinking this.
Another week even just one, would be oooh sooo great,I have something that I would just love to get into for my current project, and with this extra time it could become reality.Plus the extra attention to more details fine-tuning etc,etc...
So common guys, what do you say to another few days or so,we do got that extra time with the delay and all.
Thanks for hearing me out,I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again.

i don't want to pressure you guys, you're doing a really fine job here and in then end i'll be content with any decision you make. but just for the book: some extra days or one week would really help a lot of people i think (not excluding me of course, that's no secret :D), and i see no reason why it would hurt anyone. with some extra polishing in the extra days the overall quality of the entries might just be a notch higher.

whit everyone aiming for the challenge deadline this week ill bet they needed to kill some ideas to get it done in time
if the deadline was extended I'm sure a lot of entries will turn out a lot better, including mine.
so I think it will be better for all parties when the deadline is extended.
if there was a poll my vote would be for the extension
Yes, more time is a welcome there i so much work to do - one week please :)

If you extend the time then I might find some time to make another model for the contest

This challenge will be gold for the CG networks, especially right before SIGGRAPH.
If you give us one more week, you guys will be able to show on the challenge gallery a lot of very impressive anf FINISHED work.
Trust us we will deliver.

Not a bad idea. I'm all for it... On the plus side, there's a few animation challenge entries that I'm looking forward to seeing finished - Hopefully, this extension will allow them to.

I also think a time extension would be a good idea.
There are some challengers that are showing absolutely overwhelming work here. Maybe they can make it in time, but they can definitely make it with a few days or a week more.
It would be a pity if their work couldn't be finished in time for this challenge.
This is just my second challenge, but the effort and the contribution of the challengers so far surpasses all I've seen before and I think it's only fair to honor it with a deadline extension :D
thx

Sorry gents it's unamious here, no extension, it's just not fair to those who work their butts off to meet the deadline. Think of it as a Studio project and the client said the deadline is that date, no later because we air the show then. Would you ask for an extension then? Hardly not ;).
sorry

darn it, so then the next contest will be in August, crap, I finally had some free time so I was looking forward to this or any contest for that matter. Oh well, see you guys in August then:)
Otherwise, this talk about an extensions pretty much crippled my already late entry. I should not have relaxed . . . I guess I will transfer my work to the wip sections.

Yes, there were something going on here very special and its the first time for me i would call it " Magic " .we all were trying more then our best and it looks cool what done so far but its a matter of time.It would be great for all i think if there would be an extra week...
Sure itīs an WIP Challenge but we all want to come with something finished not half the way done and it would be great for all the teams which formed by thsi challenge to get more time.

I had an entry up to the last minute! :o)
I kept uploading in the wrong file until I was down to the last minute. It was like in those horror movies where someone is trying to open a locked door before the monster gets em.
I noticed my mistake and sent the right pic in just in time.
Anyway it was fun... I got in entries on the 3d, 2d and low poly contest.
I plan to eventually do the cinematic for the game idea I had and also simulate some of the game play with the low poly char.

What i don't get is, is it now allowed to join up with a team or not? I don't see anything unfair in working with team, because i'm not here to beat everyone with this team, i'm here to have fun. I always joined the challenge in a team, never did it alone, and now you (bentllama) call it unfair against other challengers?
I joined the first challenge with carny, the second with totitch, fellah, nanoneen and pabbloz, the third with kioku, and now the last with the stenarts group. it was always fun and i won a lot of friends during these challenges.
So whats now? Are all team entries now disqualified? Don't get me wrong buit i guess this is unfair, we did all the work and now our entry is disqualified? please tell me, that this isn't the truth :)

I must agree, I don't see a problem with team entries myself
We've had a number of fantastic team entries in the past, and they were allowed before, and now there seems to be a confusion about it (I don't even know whether it's allowed or not, for sure :surprised )...
Since there was no rule at the beginning of the challenge regarding teams, I'm not sure what will be happening now if we decide that teams are not allowed...

Right, it's official - teams are allowed :)
thank you for that information
