Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club 021: February 25- March 3 2009
Hi guys, welcome to the Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club thread.

The idea of this series of week long threads is to be an incubator for your sequential
art ideas. This mean you can post ANYTHING that will facilitate the creation of your comic. (This means ideas, scripts, Concept Art, Finished art ) for:

One panel Strip
Three to Four Panel Strips
Comic Book
Storyboards (NEW!)
Think of it of a club within the forum for people who WANT to do comics.

GENERAL RULES:

Every Wednesday night a new week long thread will be posted on the CGTalk Daily Sketch Forum (http://forumdisplay.php/?f=130) called:Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club XXX: MONTH YEAR

This will be the CORE thread, created by the moderator, (that would be me)

You can post on the core thread anything you want as long as it related a to a sequential art idea
If yo ualready have a web comic, well SHOW IT to us..
WIP entries should be on the artists WIP thread. This thread might be hosted on the WIP forum OR...the Member SKETCH Collection (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=272)
This is a thread to allow creators to have fun so please feel free post your Comments
IF and only IF we gather enough interest we might start doing voting for:

Best Writing
Best Story
Best Art
Most Updates
Most Views (IE Highest ratings: I want to keep track on who has been getting the highest number of hits on the WIP thread for the comic...more on this later
Keep this in mind.
A monthly comic book has 24 pages. And in order to have enough material for a graphic novel you should need to do 6 issues of a comic.

24 * 6 = 144 pages

This is why most pros do a at least a page a day.

And please if you do comic book, do it in multiple of 2.
Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club 010: December 10 - 16 2008
Hi guys, welcome to the Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club thread.

My advice, KEEP IT SIMPLE

If you think you can't to a full comic book, do a 3 - 4 panel
newspaper strip. 5 - 10 updates a month are more than enough in my book.
And if you are going to do a comic book, do short stories first , since they usually have
4 to 6 pages. Think Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt or Amazing Stories for inspiration.
Good luck

-R

Hey Roberto,

relentless working horse and inspirer of the art masses: That's a cool idea.
My problem is I hit the button and the control panel disappears for a new tab with the comics.

An optional link to the same control panel in a popup-window, maybe?

Yeah so I got tied up & didn't get the comic done til today. I had to do the colors this time as well :P

@daw - I love that drawing you did especially the kind of texture-y look to it. You do it in AI?

Hey,

Ultros - I don't get it... is that some kind of pop culture reference?

today I practised portraits from photo ref in the noir style I am studying with Shawn Martinbrough's book.

I use india ink (black and white) and edding markers (which are not as opaque as I hoped).
Posterized it after the scan so it does show only two values (instead of all the shades and stains from the curved paper a.s.o. - i.e. otherwise it looks very much like the paper version)

another one from photo ref (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_magoo_icu/2370718614/). The head is a bit off, ack! Also, the pose is a bit more tilted in the ref.
It's just great when you spot these things just when you think you're finished.

Daw, that looks interesting. Looking forward to it.

Eh Roberto, actually I'm not sure how to use the control bar. It opens a new window without the bar so I'm not sure how to browse the comics.

Who's that ninja ultros?

Mu, those look really good. They are powerful.

Well it is simple:

Open a WIP thread on the Member SKETCH Collection (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=272)
Post your comics in that thread and in here...
Everytime you post a comic, post that control bar
(Just make sure that the control bar has the right links for the previous next comic...BTW the last comic will ALWAYS be the one on the front page of the thread)
I wil post a sample with my comic soon...

Terribly late on this. The baby's been sick, it couldn't be helped. :P

Nice inks MU! That first one was messing with me magic-eye style. Took me a good 30 seconds to go, "OH! I see it now!"

@Daw: Funny looking characters. Looking forward to the fun.
@Ultros: The smoke-stealin-ninja! Funny.
@Mu: Nice studies Mu!
@RedPeril: LOL, men are very serious in that way. :D :D :D Hope baby gets better quick.

Nothing from me this week... my 12-panel-ambition scared me. Still working it though...

apprentice, RedPeril and Frenziedmind,

thanks a lot. Have you seen this video of Shawn doing his thing? (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2008/04/17/DI2008041703253.html) Quite an eye-opener. At least it was to me.

My 5-year old computer is not powerful enough to play the video... lol!

Oh ok, thanks Roberto. Let us know when you have your comic.

Redperil, um...actually...I don't really get this one. I think it's saying that the guy doesn't really like deep relationship conversation, right?

Mu, thanks for the video. The noir technique is definitely striking. I've never done one myself. I'm looking forward to see how you are going to use it in your story!

Sorry, you're right Mu, that was insensitive of me. I went hunting to see if I could find anything else that Frenzi might be able to look at. I found the ad for his book on youtube. While interesting, and letting me know where to find the book, it doesn't do a great deal to explain how he's doing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U6y5SfsbIU&feature=related

I think the biggest point he made was that he starts with a base sketch, and then sacrifices certain lines when he inks back over in order to give more of a suggestion of the shape than the overt definition. Then he'll go back with white and emphasize light and reflectivity.

I couldn't find another version, but I found the third CS2 tutorial in a Frank Miller (Sin City) style, an interesting method starting with a photo. I wouldn't bother with the frist two in the series, he rates them N for Noob. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiFAbcGPIQA

yes, RedPeril, rub it in for the technologically underprivileged ones among us...:scream:Sorry, you're right Mu, that was insensitive of me.LOL, I'm good :D (I like to think that by the time I get a new computer it'll be very advanced and super-duper-cool). I was able to watch that youtube vid, thanks RedPeril! That guy rocks!
