hello, this is my second attemp to model a celeb...
since angelina jolie...

I quit working on jolie for now, and just started this coming back from the movie, T3.

C&C please..

thnx, guys.

here's the wire.

it's got no details yet. I'll work on detail once I convert this into poly. I'm using spline for now.

Surely this IS poly, unless my eyes deceive me?
Perhaps a wire of the patches....

regards, and a great job!

:)

when I spline model, I set both the topology and the interpolation to 0. and every vertices to 'corner'

in that way, it looks/works like poly modeling.
so, this is spline modeling, but just with no bezier handle.

very good likeness, but i think the first image could have better lighting to show the whole model.

The likeness is excellent. What are you using for reference?

neversong
07-05-2003, 04:30 PM
I captured some shots from the movie T2.

I couldn't find good references on the web,
so I chose to do that.

Hello, Kwak.

thnx a lot.

I'm using 3dsmax 5.1

and about the rendering...there's nothing special.

I used scanline renderer for both images.
no GI of course. :)

that lastest one has one omni light,
and some fall-off settings including self illumination.

checked out T3 yet? :D

freddy: I'll post the wire once I'm done with the washboard area. :) this is taking me very long since I'm modeling as I'm learning anotomy. In my opinion, cg pays off as much time as you spend.

What are your plans for this character (other, I assume than for your reel)?
Are you using image planes from photos/sketches BTW?

hey, Atwooki!

thank you.
Yeap I'm using image planes.

My plan with this one is.... I'm going to animate this guy,
(I'm focusing on both animation and modeling.)
and, include in my reel of course. ;)

Just popping by to say this is looking an excellent model! Nice clean mesh and it actually looks like Arnie. As for hair - can't really help you there and I assume you don't have huge amounts of wonga for a hair plug in. The tried and tested "give him a hat" thing won't work either without making him look daft. But best of luck with it, this is great work!

thank you guys~ :)

for motivating me enough to stay up all night today. heh...

qu2k: well, I think it depends on the person. without bezier handle, it works just like poly: but what I find cool about that is...
I can model as if I draw. My first few spline tries were done with topology 2, and I found it very much tiring to deal with the bezier. it's very very hard to control it.

Atwooki: Thanks~ but this is maya pluggin!!! lol
sorry, I'm using max. :p

again, thank you all.

golem
07-09-2003, 03:03 PM
well i know that everyone uses his own tecnique, but the easier and more versatyle i found is patch modeling.
poly is light and quite easy but limited and cannot be converted in nurbs, nurbs is ok but a pain in texture animation... patch is easy to get with surface from splinecage, easy to deform in order to obtain morph targets, easy to be subdivided and can be immediatly converted in nurbs.
i use to model everything with patch and convert in nurbs what i need to apply a displacement mapping to.
what do you think about?

golem

neversong
07-09-2003, 03:22 PM
thnx guys. :D

nickRX: thnx for pointing it out. In fact, the head is still very rough. so, once I start adding details, I'll see if i can make it look better. ;)

golem: I agree. The only problem I have with patch modeling is its heaviness. But it is great for expressing the organic surfaces I think.

Thank you very much for the tutorial. Recently I was attempting to model a face of my friend. I used the tutorial on spline modeling from 3D Studio Max (the rhino tutorial that comes with 3DS) ... I didn't quite realize it's less of a headache to use corners all the time !!!

this is a great tip, I will atempt it once I wake up and get back to modeling ... I'm so excited now I don't think I will be able to sleep

of course I'll post a finished/WIP result later on (probably in my own thread - lol) :D

Nice tut, and amazing model!
Only critique goes to his head, he could use higher forehead.
Body is perfect if i might say, abdominals are just perfect, all muscles flow nice, smooth and natural.
But i must ask you for skin shader, to write small tut if you can cuz it gives skin really nice softness, i also experimented with falloff in self illumanition slot, but my results are not good as yours. And also wireframe of the body would be very much apreciatted. Just keep working on it, you have killer model there, i will come back later.
Keep rocking, :buttrock:

Yoshua

Great work!

I was wondering about your technique for using splines, I always have trouble modeling with splines.

I only ever use splines to start when Im modeling a head, I use them a tad diffently than in your tutorial. For now Im gona look over your tutorial and hopefully learn.

Did you use splines for the body? or did you convert it to a mesh to do the body?

Thanks, keep it up.

neversong
07-11-2003, 07:29 PM
thnx guys~

genesis max: thanks for the comment on the skin. It was just an experiment to simmulate the skin properties using multiple falloffs. Observe how the skin reacts to light, and try to fake it using 'multiple' falloffs. FYI, this trick would only work with one light source. this is good for only test renders I think. Just remember, even for the illumination.... single falloff might not be enough. use 'multiple'. that's all I can say.

yoshua: surprised that you added me to your msn. lol anyway,
yes, it's all spline yet.

So, arnie is going really really slow at this time.

hoping to finish the arm sometime soon though. :D

Jason: thanks. I'm using body builders pics...and arnold images from fineart.sk. in fact, captures from movie are mainly for the face and head. So, later, when I try to animate this guy's face... I can put his actual facial expressions.

I don't know much about max, except for the quality work I keep seeing come out of it.

I'll tell ya though, so many thoughts ran through my head about what kind of binding skeleton I'd make in Maya to get this guy to deform in a realtime engine. I kept coming to the conclusion that regardless of any problems initially encountered (none of my stuff *ever* worked the first, or second, or third time in Maya), that your topology is so freaking solid that we could make it do some beautiful moves together! I'm glad somebody is doing an arnold model, and you so far are doing extremely well. I always joke around with my friends using an ah-nold impersonation because hes such a character. I definatley love his movies and one year me and my sister used to watch T2 almost everyday after school for an entire year, like clockwork I'd come home and go downstairs and watch it.

Excellent work, I cant wait till its done but I'm also really enjoying watching this WIP as it developes, so no pressure for time. Keep it up.

Yep, looks like Arnie alright. This is excellent, Neversong. The only thing that looks slightly out (to me at least) is the forearms seeming a bit thin - but maybe they do look like that compared to the size of his upper arms. Triceps seem slightly sharp too - but again this is just an opinion. Overall though, this is great! :applause:

Been watching this one from the start and thought it was time to comment :)!! Your doing a great job keeping the likeness of arnold as you go here neversong! Keep up the great work and I hope you have plans to take the model all the way to the finish line, textured, posed and perhapes an enviroment. Waiting for your updates...

Wow, wow, wow. This model is AMAZING. I just started my own Arnie model in 3Dstudio this afternoon and I can already guarantee that it won't be anywhere near as good as this one. I'm a box modeler and having only tried patches a few times and given them up as useles...I can't believe that's how you made it. Keep going on this, your model has inspired me to make mine as good as I can.

07-18-2003, 05:21 AM
Thnx obsidian.

It's great to hear that you're starting arnold, too. I look forward to seeing yours soon.

I love poly modeling a lot. MAX offers better tool sets for it as far as I know.

Spline modeling certainly has some strengths, but I have to admit that it's not so effective in many ways.

Obsidian
07-19-2003, 02:00 AM
I've never really tried to do much spline modeling, I am far more comfortable using polygons and sub-d's. The new editable polygon tools in Max 5 are really excellent too, they've sped my workflow up beyond imagination. I've never been able to work so fast before. :)

So far I've only spent about 6 hours on my model, but have a really good start on the torso and upper leg. I wanted to save the head and face for last, because that way I will have had a good 12+ hours of organic modeling under my belt and feel more comfortable. I think if I had started with his head I'd have already given up :p

Once I'm a little further along I'll start my own thread and post a link in here for anyone who's interested. Your model is only more inspiration for me to keep going, so thanks for making it, and don't quit!

I believe his forhead needs to be taller. If you look at the ref pic near the beginning of this thread, you can see that his eyes are closer to the middle of his head (vertically). Just my first thought. But the likeness (is that a word?) is excellent, I'm impressed.

It just keeps getting better. I'd still add those ears. They don't have to be detailed (at least right away), but for me they serve as a good landmark for certain facial relationships. But the lack of them doesn't detract from your display of observation, so I'm not rilly worried about it, more pointing it out as a possible guideline for others to consider.

Just curious, cos you've got some outstanding facial detail there. How old would you say your Arnold is?

I'd be interested to see how the fingers of the hands you add encircle the wrist, whether they fit snuggly, or the degree to which they overlap.

Depending upon one or the other, one could end up with a mesomorph exibiting possible symptoms of Marfan's!;)

Beautifully observed, and tessellated, neversong!

Spakman:

As an aside, and an interesting comment on mesomorphia:

Throughout history, 'Teutonic' branches of human structure(/tesselllation/ thyroid growth)have frequently exhibited traits common to both endomorphia and mesomorphia: quite why this narrow topograhical band has subsisted throughout generations is strange, (good examples of which would be medium thyroid growth German/ Austrian girls with extremely stong (almost neanderthal-like protuberant browlines)....

Arnie, coming from (I believe) the North-East of Austria, this is all the more expected,

Also, the linked/inherent Scandinavian lineage traits are somewhat simlar; though are exhibited over a shorter development time period....

Not wanting to get off-thread here by any means.....
just an observation:

also: look carefully at Arnie's thumbs....(second phalanges)

Right on! Now I forget whether I meant mesomorph or endomorph. I always mess that stuff up. Arnold's rilly more endomporhic, right? (gotta look that up. just what I get for trying to be witty and multisyllabic)

Don't mean to confuse you, neversong! I guess what I was trying to get at was how cats like pres Lincoln, an ectomorph, (skinny dood, like me), sometimes have Marfan's syndrome which affects proportions.

damn! forget what I said! You're stuff rocks, just keep an eye on the proportions (but get back to me on that age question thingy.)

thnx guys. :D

hehe...ok I had to look up those words you guys brought up before I reply. lol

spakman: thnx.

the facial references I am using are mostly from T2.
So the age I'm aiming at is... about 35~40. and as I mentioned before, it's got only 70% of detail I plan to put yet. I plan to put details(around eyes, mouth..etc.) in polygon mode.

There might be some missmatch between the age of his body and face since I'm using whatever I can grab for the body.

For the hand, I'm going to use general reference images which means...the hand won't look like arnold's hand. :hmm:

And about the ears, I agree. It's just my lazyness.... about modeling ears with spline. I use polygon for ears. Actually, my very first ear model was spline. I remember how much I got pissed off. hahahaha...

thnx, Atwooki, Genesis, BDstudos~

have a nice weekend. :)

one more thing, check this out.
here's the screenshot of the wire of the arm and the reference(very cheap one.lol) I'm using. See the size of the forearm? I think, it might be the wrist. Forearm's size is could be normal. What do you think?

Hey cool, I think we're using the same reference photos...I couldn't find any better ones either! :hmm:

I think in terms of hands, as long as they suit the model you'll be fine with it. However, if you are using T2 as reference there are plenty of good shots of his hands that you could probably capture. That was kind of what I was planning to do.

Any idea what kind of clothes you're going with? How do you plan on doing them? (Sorry if this was asked earlier...this thread is huge)

Bdstudios: thnx. TX model will be really cool! I guess, it'll be kinda tough to get enough reference though. She's kinda new, right?

Obsidian: I know. this reference is very cheap. lol Well, I'm using other photos for details. this one is reference I'm using just for the proportions. I just checked another guy's work in finished gallery... who did a bodybuiler model using this same images. lol now, my model looks cheasy. :p

and yes, you're right. In T2, there should be some good references for the hand. I'll see if I can find any. thnx.

Doh! I got suckered by my own question. You got it. (as far as matching body age with face, you'd be surprised how inconsistent that relationship is depending upon the person's general health and fitness - up to a certain point).

But (shaders and textures aside - cos that stuff is waaayyyy over my head), you've got some pretty accurate age indicators in your facial setup. I'd be interested in your take on why your arnold is around that age. But save it for later, I don't want to sidetrack this thread.

Just something I like to put out there when seeing work of this quality.

(off topic, but there was some article in a game mag about FF's character descriptions and their ages. I was struck by how they nailed it. I want to have that eye someday. It made me go back and reevaluate my own thought processes. Some tricked out knowledge those cats have).

wow, great thread.

i came on here just to find some examples of good muscle modelling and this is the first thing i open! superb!

i'm currently trying to make this huge beast/demon thing whos gonna have all the muscles! i'm treating it as a modelling project for myself. so far i have been following this good wire frame of a torso, basically poly by poly, but realised its not working out! and now i see yours! which looks more like what i want my demons body to look like. i'm intregued your using splines, and i'll definatly give this a go.

i'm trying to find that one good guide to modelling good muscle structures, but the only way i think i can do this is by studying other peoples wires, and muscles refrence photos, which i've downloaded!

anyway, thanks for inspiring me here. i might be off in the right direction now.

Here's a screenshot of the hand I'm working on for Arnold. My friend, Travian3D told me the bodybuilder's fingers need to be thicker. Funny, I used that cheap hand model sheet from fineart.sk... and now it looks like my hand! lol

I agree about the finges, they should indeed be thicker. I would also suggest adding veins to the top of the hands. All the people I know that bodybuild have very pronounced veins there. You may also want to make the heel and wrist a little beefier as well, but that will be decided when you attach it to your model's arm.

Keep up the awesome work.

Yo neversong!

...you caught me in the middle of the move. My computer is the last to go. Personally, I suck at hands and mine are too skinny to use as reference (my thumbs are also too short, which sucks for piano).

So I dig what you're doing, but I'd rilly like to see the whole dealio. Hands are indeed a fractal subset of their own, but I want to see more attention paid to the first fractal: the head (you pretty much nailed), the arms, and torso too, (still rilly love your lats).

I say stick those dope hands on there as best you can and show me some leg!

(BTW there's this insane Arnold that Jeff Bunker built in Animation Master. I think it came with the app. Some excellent stuff. Jeff Bunker was the first guy I noticed who used splines to mimic real muscles, yet deform with limitations on weights. "edgeloops" (we called it "splineage" in Hash. I'm gonna find the link and edit this post when I find it) To this day, his leg layout is one of the best I've ever seen.

Those are some mad skillz you're offering to the cybercosmos.

hit me back neversong! I want more!

Peace d=^)
