hey guys, been working on this for a few now in 3dmax.. i was wondering what would be the best way to create a photorealistic skin now. i always have had the feeling that 3dmax still has this kinda plastic or bubber like kinda look.. how can i made this look really organic?
you guys have tutorials or tips for this?

Ya ol' rascally varmint. You're still up to your old tricks I see. How ya been? This looks to be the start of some cool stuff.

Hey Teyon lill ol pal :D i'm fine thx, you? yes, i'm still modeling.. never stopped really.. just didn't post much.. haven't seem much of you in a while either..

here's a little update... added some emotion controlers.. anybody who got some tips on how to make the skin better.. please to tell

That's looking good. The expressions are a bit humanistic so I'm guessing it's for a toon or semi realistic project? I'm okay more or less. I suffered some setbacks with the lost and regain of Rhino, some deaths and the like. Just started getting into poly work myself using GMAX and the LW demo. I tried Maya and XSI but I haven't devoted any serious time to either one.
So, what is this guy for exactly anyway? An anim, commercial, or just personal stuff?

ooh cool. i still wanna try maya or softimage sometime.. i'm still wondering if the quality is so much better because of the program or because of the people that use it :) anyways, it's a personal project.. just to keep in shape.. i've been modeling too many buildings and stuff like that for my work. I have to stay in shape with organic modeling :P still my favorite.
i wanna get more into animation too. i've tried allot of things to create facial animation.. i found out that morphs didn't really work for my style. i want to have more expressive animations. so now i'm trying Xlinked dummies in 3dmax with a low poly model and then i put a meshsmooth over it. workin out pretty wel i think.

Looks good to me. This technique you speak of...I guess you use bones instead of morphs for the expressions? Would that involve splines or do you actually use the bone system from max to do this?

hey i hope this isnt a private discussion :p
the model + skin look really great. i dont really have many crits. in fact, i dont have any crits at all! im looking forward to seeing more of this. especially an animation would be a killer
TBKoen
07-05-2003, 03:26 PM
it's actualy kinda simple.. i just selected some vertex dots with a big fall-off.. and then connected it to a dummy. so when i move the dummy the model wil change
TBKoen
07-05-2003, 03:34 PM
thx, still.. i think this still doesn't really look like skin.. i've used dozens of maps now.. a texture, bump, specular, anistropy map.. all of it.. still i don't get the effect i want.
i'm aiming for a sharp line between the hard plates on top of his head.. and soft skin in the "holes" where there is no bone.

I'd help but I'm still learning GMAX (max's bastard cousin). Did you try using multi-channel maps and maybe the dreaded displacement maps (seems few people use displacement). Wish I could give ya more help bud.
Ask over in the Max forum. They may know.

Try turning down diffuse. It looks like the skin is radiating colour. Try to fake a subsurface layer, with a skin shader that relies on the facing ration of the viewing camera to control specularity and glow... I use maya I dont know if there is a max alternative.

reminds me of a project i still wanted to do.
re create the scene from jurrasic park 3. where the say they make traps!!!
and then some sort of parody of that scene where the raptors actualy set a big trap and then sneak into the bushes..
damn just told my whole plan hehehe. whatever.
your dinosaur looks very good, only crit is maybey the head could be al little bit smaller. looks like its too heavy for his head.
great job and more to come hey......

very very very very supervery hard to make realistic skin in 3dsmax. very hard because before brazil's subsurf scattering material, you had no chance to obtain this kinda effect.
the only clue is: work with reference map, try to find some nice photo and try to paint a better specular map.
if you try to download a paper from siggraph (ExLuna BMRT for "hollow man", MtoR for "final fantasy") or a lecture on kubelka munk model, you will read abut a lot of intresting notions over the concept of multy layered shaders and skin.
is quite impossible to create a realistic shader if you have not a subsurface scattering model or a tool that allows you to define how thik is the ear, do you know what i mean?
use a oren nayar blinn shader, try to understand how diff.level and roughness can improve your shader and put a fresnel reflection.
maybe this will work.
about the animation... i use morphing with patch modeling. is the easier way i ever found...

skin is not ready yet but the bump en texture maps are there!
and another site update (http://www.indigosite.nl/tenzc/reksje)
Hi, i found this tutorial from Neil Blevins site to be pretty informative on making organic textures using alot of procedurals:
http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/complex_mats_falloff/complex_mats_falloff.htm
You might get some ideas from trying some similar things to see what you like :)

aaaah thx.. that's a really cool effect.. tried something together with some standart 3dmax tutorials.
looks pretty impressive i think, kinda fluffy tho :P but that's ok.. it's still suppose to be a cute trex. hmm maybe i used a bit to much specular.. i guess texturing to realism isn't really my thing.. but i wanna keep on trying, more tips?

aah, really awsome creature.. skin looks cool already.
here are the textures (http://www.indigosite.nl/tenzc/textures.jpg) .. pretty simple really. all painted by hand with photoshop. downsided them tho, hope you don't mind ;)
and here's a material update. bumpmap is stronger now, and the reflection is stronger and more defined. used a fall off that works together with the camera and a mask to select the parts i wanted to "glow". mainly the hard plates.

looks better now.
you gotta improve specular: if you consider reptyle skin you can see that it's a bit reflective.
i read old interview about the making of jurassic park. they used a kind of environmental reflection map in order to enhance composited dynos with real background.
you could mix the fallof reflection map with a scene environment map.
be sure to mask the environment, but it's quite easy cause you can reload your bump mapping and increase the reflection where you decided for the bones, and lower it on soft skin.
reflection should affect also mouth and nose, cause they're both always wet, expecially if your pet uses to move into pools of water.
keep on... shading with max is not so easy!

Nice to see original dino design. Seeing young ones is quite rare thing :).
As golem said, add some reflections/envap, and make area around 'mouth' wet/shiny.

Maybe make this patch of yellow skin on second one lil more orange (or generally darker?)
